Actually, Yuet/Wat was more a basket term for various tribes in South China.

in 207bc, Au Lac was annexed by Nam Yuet, that's how the name "Nam Viet" came about. thereafter, the "Vietnamese" started applying Chinese labels on their own historical figures.

Nam Yuet was a Cantonese kingdom, NOT a "Vietnamese" one :/

The old autonym for Cantonese is "Yuet", a fact that foreigners tend to overlook.

There are many Chinese living in Vietnam as well as vice versa living in Hongkong and nearby provinces. I mean, I know what you're trying to get across. Cantonese, Teochew, Hakka are Han. Yes, they are the same people as the larger Mandarin speakers. I guess many Cantonese who are born in Vietnam see themselves as Vietnamese, it's a national identity, not ethnic identity.
