  • sorry to say there will always be wars until people open there eyes and question whats going on ...these crooks have always sent working class youngsters to kill working class youngters and until you wake up they always will.

  • This should be compulsory viewing.

  • When will the killing stop?

    When will war end?

Or are we all hell bent on destroying ourselves?

After all we are all human beings

    I'd rather be a tomato

  • Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives... you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours... You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.

    — Atatürk 1934

  • The most moving version of the song I have ever heard. So intense and serious.

  • How I would have loved to be able to send a link for this to my dad. He loved Liam's music and he would have loved this. RIP Dad and Liam, I miss you

  • I first heard this song about 10 years ago. I was crossing the Bridge of Remembrance, in Christchurch NZ. An Ozzie & a Kiwi were singing and playing. They were both young, probably only 20 or so, and I bawled my eyes out.

  • Gallipoli/Souvla bay - atop the pain and wounded and maimed, it was a mission with no useful objective other than to assuage Winston Churchill's pride. Whenever I hear some politician tell us "We cannot be seen to withdraw - we cannot be seen to lose" I remember this song. This is the other side of the political ideologues who'll fight to the last drop of someone else's blood.

Liam - your voice was the soundtrack of my life; I'll love you 'till I die.

  • Holy crap that actually made me cry.

  • @solus881 - Join the club of people with a heart, my friend. I first heard this song at a folksinging campfire in 1980 or so - after thinking about it for a while, I've been anti-war ever since. Music can change your heart.

  • What a song... what a performance... what a voice... what an artist!... SHIVERING!

  • What a song... what a performance... what a voice... what an artist!... SHIVERING!

  • Thank you.

  • today is ANZAC day, so a very fitting song for the day

  • There'll never be another Liam Clancy. Music's loss, heaven's gain.

    Smedley

  • The definitive version belongs to Liam... I've posted this song on youtube myself, but nothing can compare to what his hypnotic glimpse into a bygone era has meant after all these years... In three years it will be 100 years since the beginning of WWI. The prophecy comes true... "Someday no one will march there at all." It's an eerie echo of our past that will continue to be replayed until we get it right..

  • Eric Bogle wrote this song more than 30 years ago. His body of work since is immense. His "best of" collection is 5 cd's long and that was years ago.

Go dig for some of his work - it is awesome.

Especially go find "Eric Bogle Live at Stonyfell Winery" DVD - probably the best concert DVD I own (and I have a lot - second best is S&G Old Friends).

I have followed Eric since this song was in its youth - he keeps getting better!

  • He must have felt very sad with the rest of them gone you can see it in him

  • brings home the disaster that was Gallipoli without going into the controversy of why it went so wrong and had such horrendous casulaties.

  • Lest we forget.

  • Awsome and moving.

  • What a magnificent version of this brilliant song! Nobody does this song better!

  • @geohabe Indeed, buddy! I couldn't agree more... just awesome... Bogle's poetry and and Clancy's voice... shivering!

  • wow

  • God, Liam... you move me..

  • we will never see his likes again

  • Liam ist der beste

  • I get cold chills when I hear thus song - and this is the best version I have heard

and all these years later we are still fighting other peoplels' wars - Lest we forget Korea, Vietnam Iraq and Afghanistan

  • We are so damn stupid that were still doing it, this song is as pertinent / relevant now as it is referring to Galipoli.

Come on we can do better than that.

  • This is one of the best versions I have ever listened to, why does God take the best .RIP Liam Clancy

  • @disco1949 - Maybe because Paddy, Bobby, Tom, and Tommy Makem needed Liam to join them jamming up in Heaven. :)

  • @sandinmyears1 Here, here :-)

  • what can you say about the horrors of war.

  • god bless Liam RIP

  • we'll miss you liam. thanks for the memories.

  • RIP

  • Incredible song for veterans day. The horrors of war.

  • It's not the first time I've heard it, but it's the first time I've heard it by Liam Clancy. And it's the first time I've seen the person sing it like he lived it. You can actually see the sadness in his face. Wow!

  • This is the first time I heard that song. tellya, the lyrics brought me to tears.
