@samlexco I agree it's time all people STOPPED! Fighting and lived as ONE.. for all Men are one under God! For we are made in his likeness... I extend my hand to you Sammy in Friendship.. to you and your people! too much bad blood for way too long.. we need to make a start to change thing and unless some done it will never Be... A million mile journey starts with the first step!! and if that first step is not taken!! the Journey will ways remain a DREAM!! of WHAT IF'S..... Rod
sorry to say there will always be wars until people open there eyes and question whats going on ...these crooks have always sent working class youngsters to kill working class youngters and until you wake up they always will.
Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives... you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours... You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.
I first heard this song about 10 years ago. I was crossing the Bridge of Remembrance, in Christchurch NZ. An Ozzie & a Kiwi were singing and playing. They were both young, probably only 20 or so, and I bawled my eyes out.
Gallipoli/Souvla bay - atop the pain and wounded and maimed, it was a mission with no useful objective other than to assuage Winston Churchill's pride. Whenever I hear some politician tell us "We cannot be seen to withdraw - we cannot be seen to lose" I remember this song. This is the other side of the political ideologues who'll fight to the last drop of someone else's blood.
Liam - your voice was the soundtrack of my life; I'll love you 'till I die.
@solus881 - Join the club of people with a heart, my friend. I first heard this song at a folksinging campfire in 1980 or so - after thinking about it for a while, I've been anti-war ever since. Music can change your heart.
The definitive version belongs to Liam... I've posted this song on youtube myself, but nothing can compare to what his hypnotic glimpse into a bygone era has meant after all these years... In three years it will be 100 years since the beginning of WWI. The prophecy comes true... "Someday no one will march there at all." It's an eerie echo of our past that will continue to be replayed until we get it right..
Eric Bogle wrote this song more than 30 years ago. His body of work since is immense. His "best of" collection is 5 cd's long and that was years ago.
Go dig for some of his work - it is awesome.
Especially go find "Eric Bogle Live at Stonyfell Winery" DVD - probably the best concert DVD I own (and I have a lot - second best is S&G Old Friends).
I have followed Eric since this song was in its youth - he keeps getting better!
It's not the first time I've heard it, but it's the first time I've heard it by Liam Clancy. And it's the first time I've seen the person sing it like he lived it. You can actually see the sadness in his face. Wow!

When will the killing stop?
When will war end?
Or are we all hell bent on destroying ourselves?
After all we are all human beings
I'd rather be a tomato

brings home the disaster that was Gallipoli without going into the controversy of why it went so wrong and had such horrendous casulaties.

We are so damn stupid that were still doing it, this song is as pertinent / relevant now as it is referring to Galipoli.
Come on we can do better than that.
