@FinchPG yea you can put in a new internal hdd after a backup, install os x from disk and then restore the information from the time machine backup. although if i may suggest an alternative i'd put the new hdd in an enclosure and use an app called Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the old disk directly to the new disk so all you have to do is pop the new one in and your good to go. Good Luck
after you back it up. can you put in a new hardrive and boot a time mechine file?

yea its a program called iStat Menus google it and its the first link i believe. you can monitor ram hdd network traffic fans etc.
