Funny people think that a Rush song could be duplicated as is, especially live. Hilarious that people get all "violent" about it, hiding behind a computer monitor. Live rock music is supposed to be rough. Bands souldn't do knock offs of other bands music, they have to make it their own. Judging it by a video taken with a digital camera is a bit lame. If you look at other videos it's not hard to see she is a great musician. And the shower curtain complaint, WTF? Yeh! Rock on Selina.
This is a great cover. I don't know what everyone is complaining about. I hate it when people believe covers should be a note for note copy of the original or that the original is sacred is some way. Why bother doing the cover if it is going to sound the exact same? I do like the album version "better" but why bother going out to live shows if all you care about is hearing the a lip synced version of the album track?
Her recordings are fantastic but, with all due respect, I wouldn't go to see her live! And get a fashion consultant; it looks like she is wearing a shower curtain...
The worst part's not even the singing. It's the wankers on the instrumentals not even doing it properly. I normally try to see each cover as unique but this is like so many of you said/thought, a bullshit cover.
I ama huge fan of Selina. She does a great cover of this song on her CD, but for some reason she tried to play it reggae style here, which obviously did not work !! Check out her other stuff. I have to agree that she did not sound good at all here !! Sorry Selina.
what a piece of shit cover. butchery at it's finest. These people have no business even looking at a Rush CD. This is just the worst piece of crap i've ever seen on youtube in my life. The band shoulda learned the song better and Selina Martin needs to never touch a Rush song for as long as she lives. This came straight outta Satan's ass. this just sux. Why Rush gave her permission to do this i will never know.
continued... I have seen some really good bands in Toronto that don't make it because Canada does a shit job of promoting their talent, which I believe Alex Lifeson makes mention of in Beyond the Lighted Stage. In reference to this video, in defence to the band, the sound guy at the horseshoe sucks and has no clue, however, I don't think the sound guy is at fault, the singing and the band both sucked.
continued... I uderstand these places are where people learn their chops and grow their talent but seriously if you if you can't pull off the song, don't play it. This was a seriously shitty renditon of a great song. I agree with a previous blogger on the state of music and musicianship today. Half of these bands can't even play their instruments. However, as mentioned earlier there are some bands that have the stuff and some Canadian acts have made it like Metric and Arcade Fire but
Now days anyone can go play at the Horseshoe, Lee's Palace , etc in Toronto. Usually there will be 3 to 5 bands playing on any given night and once in a while you will have a band that can bring it but over all the bands are mediocre at best. The problem now days are the bars are trying to survive because noone is coming out to see the bands. To play at any of these establishments the band has to guarantee 30 people to come to the gig. So basically anyone that can do that is in
I think this is really good, fun, its Kooky and new wave, its not supposed to be a muso homage. Some of you are missing the point. A good song stands up to any interpretation.
AHHHHHHHHHH...........I just died on the inside. When you cover a song by a band that focuses on musicianship, you play it right in honor of the composers. And the vocals???? I am not being purposely hard on Martin but honestly the first thing I thought of when I heard her voice was a cow. I can hear Neil, Alex and Geddy chuckling already.
@cactus337 Thanks. I feel honored that you took the time to respond to my comment, (posted friggin 8 months ago), but next time you cluelessly attempt to bash a fan of a band who's song is being unashamedly pissed on, try to use a tad bit more originality.
The acoustic guitarist with the hat is Dave Bidini (The Rheostatics) who has a side project called Bidiniband, who are backing Selina Martin in the video. Bidini helped induct Rush to the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in March 2010 by reading from his book 'For Those About to Rock'. Geddy Lee recently had optioned the film and TV rights to Dave Bidini's 2005 book 'Baseballissimo'. So Dave and Geddy are apparently long time friends.
And just another showing of how BAD Canadian music has gotten. Considering that we used to offer great bands like RUSH, this is just embarrassing. Time for the music "industry" to WAKE UP and give us some bands that are HALF DECENT!

it's just the sound on the vid that sucks. As far as the musicians, if you don't know Dave Bidini & Don Kerr, shoot yourself in the face.

I really didn't like this "interpretation", but I don't think there was any malice behind this performance, so I'm prepared to give her a break.
You either "believe in the freedom of music" — and support it — or you don't.

Most successful when the interpretation strays furthest from the original. Keep experimenting!
