I LOVE this ad. I dont know what i enjoy more, the casual racism & sexisim, the brilliant accuracy of toy design in Iron Man, The Thing & The Human Torch. Or the lenghths they went to in getting the precise details right about each heroes power like Mr Fantastic's Invisibility or Thor's viking abilities.
The announcers calm understated delivery is also a bonus.
If I remember correctly, they also had Daredevil (in the red costume as well as the yellow and red one). And since when was Catwoman a super hero? She was a villain!
Falcon is one of the most underrated superheroes ever. Boy Ironman looks just plain wrong with that face. And the less said about poor Human Torch, the better...
Seems like they could have done a better job with the design work even back then. Iron man looks like he's smiling through his mask, Conan is way too skinny, The Thing looks like he's wearing a grey rock shirt that doesn't match his exterior and Thor has bad hair. Would still like to get hold of some though.
Would love to be able to get hold of some of these vintage figures. Bet they cost an arm and a leg and you have to be very resourceful to find them now. I remember having Superman, Batman, Hulk and Shazam when I was a kid. Couldn't tell what ever became of them.
Most of these guys can be found loose, in pretty good condition and at a reasonable price on eBay. I replaced a bunch the figures I'd had as a kid this way. For whatever reason Iron Man was the hardest to find/most expensive.
It was Robin Hood in the forest not Green Arrow. Mr. Fantastic changes shape and hardness or softness of his body, needed invisble girl or invisible woman to turn him invisible, although he could stretch thin and hide behind a pipe or something.
"That fantastic green giant superheroe the Hulk, who for some reason is an inch shorter than the other heroes'! ....and Conan needs to hit the gym....
Hehehe.... I asked me, if the Thing holding the rock or the rock the Thing.... There isnt a big different hu.... Tarzan.????? Hahaha a super hero..?? But this awesome commercial gets 5stars
So many funny moments...how is a kid supposed to make invisible girl go invisble? But I would like to know exactly what "underwater crime" is Aquaman supposed to be fighting? Unles they are talking about BP!
If I remember right, the villains included: The Joker; The Penguin, Mr. Mxptylk, Dr. Doom, The Green Goblin, Lex Luthor, The Riddler and The Lizard (among others). Mego also had a long forgotten line of horror movie monsters: Frankenstein, Dracula and The Wolf Man, I think. For some reason, Mr. Mxptylk was the same size as all the other figures - he was almost a dwarf, unless I'm mistaken.
I love the line about "Invisible Girl and Mr. Fantastic both have the power of invisibility". How ridiculous! The commercial sucks, but the product was actually very cool. These figures have to be the inspiration for "Robot Chicken". They even use mock-ups of these figures in that show. Also - why did they put Green Arrow in with the women heroes? The villains were a fantastic idea. But the Falcon? "That great black super hero"?? Where was the NAACP on that one? They let THAT slide?
@elc1960 Referring to a person or character as 'black' wasn't unusual or a pejorative back then. A character marketed as 'black' probably wouldn't have raised the NAACP's ire at all - they probably would have liked it.
@WildmanWoodie I know, I was about 13 when these toys came out. I just meant that it seemed strange that they would single out his "blackness" as a selling point instead of him being a super hero. "Come on kiddies, buy the Falcon - he's BLACK, you know!" He was actually Captain America's sidekick in the comics back then. He was pretty cool, but he wasn't the star of their comics back then and like all of Cap's other sidekicks he got killed off as well.
My older brother had the Conan figure. I remember it came with an axe and a sword (this was way before action figures came with 10,000 accessories). Wow, I always thought Falcon was an understimated hero. Good to know it had his own Mego doll,,,I mean action figure...
The fantastic four discription needed a little more research. The Human Torch [faster then the speed of light]? Mr. and Mrs. Fantastic [both with the powers of invisibillity]? I loved Mego but, they kind of did their own thing didn't they. And, let us not forget the Falcon's discription [all I can say is WTF!!!!!!! ]. Mego, were a bunch of marketing maniacs [got to love 'em ]. I miss those great toy commercials and Saturday morning fun days.
The only disappointing figures were the FF. Hard to depict their powers on a Mego budget. And poor Thing gets stuck with a "Thing" body stocking. (Same thing happened to Tarzan). They probably would have been better off giving Thing an orange "Hulk" body. The rest of the line was awesome... especially Falcon, Iron Man and Lizard.
I loved these toys back in the day. The one flaw with these is that the parts were held together with a rubber band. One false move, and SNAP - they were useless as action figures. But for some reason, Hulk and Iron Man held up for years.
They has knee joint issues as well...and some flesh colored heads turned a weird gray color...as for the rubber band, you might be thinking of ther first series...later they had a very thick elastic holding them together..a have about 150 of them around the house...none are my originals I had as a kid though... Ebay!!
these toys were great. There have been many like them over the years but the originals were pretty cool.Mego and Remco were great toy companies.I am glad that Hasbro (who bought Kenner) and mattel are still making superheroes.I have to wonder though' what happened to Toy Biz and even playing Mantis...
So . . . aside from the copyright infringement of DC and Marvel, and aside from the fun racism thrown in for Falcon (That great BLACK superhero!!), and aside from the fact that all the heads are the same on every character, just painted differently, and aside from the fact they said Mr. Fantastic has invisibility powers to cover up the fact they can't make him stretch, and aside from the fact that The Human Torch and The Thing wear costumes, I'm sure the toys were great =D
Copyright infringement...? They HAD all the rights secured!! The Falcon was one of the first black heores NOT to have black in his name...I mean they didn't call Spiderman "The White Spiderman" did they?? Great toys from a by-gone era!!
if you look on ebay, or at big flea markets, these figures are selling for a lot of money, i have Spiderman, and Bat man, they cost me like $ 20 each, and they have seen better days, lol
To all of you who are blasting the WGSH line of Mego Toys... your idiots. The innovations that the company did for the toy industry goes much furher than what wag boy gets. Take the time to learn about the Mego Corporation and show a little respect... They earned it.
You've got to admit though, that the original versions of Hulk and Thing were seriously lacking. For some reason they were shorter than all the other heroes and Thing's "granite" chest was a white shirt. The poseability and the fact that they licensed both DC and Marvel heroes together so kids could play with figures that were the right scale was cool, but this commercial does have its flaws. Mr Fantastic does not have the power of invisibility.
You're right, there was a bunch lacking in the way some characters were designed. Sorry for referring to everybody as idiots. It just seems that we get a little forgetful of how it took some less then perfect "steps" to get the great stuff of tomorrow. As far as the commercials go I find them entertaining, somewhat stupid but entertaining. Plus you figure since MR. F didn't stretch there had to be some "one of those kids" that would have ripped him apart by trying to simulate his power.
You've got a point too. These were practically the prototypes of super hero action figures. I had Hulk in about ever size, but this. I used to use the bigger scale Hulk with the "regular" sized super heroes.
Did I just see dolls repainted to make kids think that they were actual action figures? Because that's what I saw. Everyone of these toys is smiling (besides the lizard). They got some of the names wrong. The things chest looks like clothes. AND TARZAN IS A NOT A SUPER HERO!
@BombasticNinjaMan That great Black superhero...in case you can't tell! Thats too funny! completely politically incorrect but hilarious just the same.
The main reason MEGO went under was due to too many licensing deals. They held the gauntlet when it came to popular characters, and they could have done fine on their superhero line. Properties like 'Mork & Mindy', and 'Dallas' among others were their undoing. A side note is that they passed on the license to 'Star Wars', as they thought the movie would be unsuccessful.
