Really? your commenting on faces? REALLY?! you can't ignore a facial expression for five seconds to realize this is the most passionate and most brilliantly executed version of this aria on all of youtube and that you'd probably never be so lucky in your life to experience such perfection in a live performance?!
I love how everyone is defending her ridiculous faces! She's got a beautiful voice AND her faces make people laugh. You can't ignore them or act like they are necessary for singing or stage acting, because they aren't, but you can just accept that what she does is unique and entertaining. Ha!
Well... I am sure that the faces she makes are just the reflection of how much FUN she gets doing what she likes... and that is one of the reasons I like her MORE.
Bravo Cecilia!
@spenzur My brother's ex fiancé taped the live broadcast, and gave the tape to him before the went their own ways. Loving the production value and performance, I went to a specialist 50 miles away that cleaned up the tape and transferred it to DVD. There are no chapters, but I never jump ahead; when I start watching it, I watch it in entirety.
I don't care what her critics say.....she can aspirate all she likes if she continues to sing like this. I don't know anyone who can sing such arias and give me goosebumps like she does. I love others doing this too, but to me she generates an excitement that is hard to beat.
You know, Cecilia has her critics, that are sometimes ruthless against her. They throw negative criticism right and left. They can say what they want, but I think ultimately everyone will have to acknowledge her greatness. She has not come to be one of the most celebrates singers alive because she is bad. It is quite the contrary. She is superb. And that's why we love her.
There are two reasons why she "pulls those faces". The first is that the positioning of the jaw, lips and tongue help to produce the beautiful sound and her famously crystal-clear diction; and the second is that, in a big opera theatre, many singers expressions, at a distance, seem as blank as a plank ... big expressions allow the viewer to see the acting from way back in the theatre. Bartoli is wonderful.
@fringelily Thank you, thank you, thank you for having the patience to explain this to those that don't and probably won't ever "get it." And the same goes for sets, lighting, stage design. Many time the costumes I wore on stage were, in plain view, were over the top, garish, and many not attractive at all. Put them under high powered stage wattage and magic happened. xoxo
@fringelily I imaging stressing her vocal chords is so intensive, its hard for her to also pay attention to her own face. She does more with her vocal chords than a guitarist does with one of their hands, and I can only imagine the focus it requires. As a guitarist, sometimes I make faces. Her facial expressions don't bother me, and if they did: I could close my eyes, her voice is the only thing important to me.
@MrSwifts31 that really is too bad that you give up the opportunity to hear her voice because of her facial expressions. I, on the other hand, watch because I love the expressions, joy and energy that goes into her performance.
Marilyn Horne's 1966 recording of this aria is far superior - she does not use so much ornamentation and sounds totally effortless against Bartoli who always sounds to me as though she is running out of breath!
@conghoan1998 Callas was not really a Classical era operatic singer, though. She was meant for all the Romanic era productions of Puccini, Verdi. All those dramatic operas. It takes a different style of singing.
@oliviasmulyan Yes, I like them because they can sound freaky. Unlike many other operasingers, Cecilia's trills are real trills. You can hear a big difference between her vibrato and trills. Btw, I posted on youre chanal a long time ago and youve never reacted on it. Bye ;)
@oliviasmulyan Yes that one is different because she goes higher while trilling. Very nice! Or the trills in Vi sono sposa e amante. Or from Bel raggio and Disserratevi , O porte D'averno. Actually all her trills xD
Ms. Bartoli kind of owns this role doesn't she. Its not just a question of her highly accomplished mezzo coloratura vocal technique (very difficult), but also her vocal interepretation of a naive young girl . Bartoli also brings natural acting abilities to the fore--comic flair, a naivete, pathos, even a touch of goofiness that is totally natural--and puts A. Netrebko's mannered attempts at comedy in ie Don Pasquale to shame. Brava Ms. Bartoli!!!! Love you!!
@devillif311 all i'm saying is if you commit yourself and practice and devote yourself to music as much as she's done then anything is possible. open your fucking mind.
@devillif311 I totally agree with your comment! but -- especially in view of the content of your message -- I trully hope you meant to be ironic when you wrote "more stupider" ;-P
@reclamantul Critics have stated there is such an unusual timbre to her voice that has not been heard in a long time....she is known in the opera world as the Queen of Agility for playing both mezzo and soprano roles!
Some brilliant singing, despite the yodelling cadenzas, but her characterisation, I repeat, is ridiculous. I see a hysterical cream cake, not Cenerentola at all but Cecilia, in love with her own voice, showing off. VULGAR. Apparently she only sings in 1-2 productions a year, has done just a handful of stage roles, some badly chosen (Clari...) and it's probably for the best, she really is offensive on stage. Better stick to recordings of rare castrato arias, which best employ her voice.
@philipc67 To say she is vulgar is exaggerating - she has poor taste. Her 'characterisation' is a little ridiculous (and that giant cake is bizarre), I agree, but here she is adorable.

@90lysander Ah yes! Isn't it wonderful? Compare to the companion (concert) performance by Bartoli, posted by Parsifalito; she just lets loose and Belts [it] out! I love her too!
@MrJago80 I think Horne and Bartoli have very differnt approach to coloratura; I don't agree that one is "right" and the other incorrect, nor re-educate our ears to accept one interpretation over another. But even Rossini himself gladly would have enjoyed their very disparate sonority and interpretation of the Character, and her arias. I enjoy them both for very different reasons-- both being quite valid Cenerentola divas.
@UlfenDaddy You touched on a very important theme here for YT opera listeners --We can ENJOY different singers singing the same role without comparing them all the time--they may be both valid as you say. Just enjoy the differences in their approaches, tones, diction and lots of things. Dont' compare apples and oranges.
Sometimes I think a solid musical education and experience is an huge handicap to just ENJOYING the opera! In the wads of notes, slides and scales, trills and carrying on though, there are always pearls here and there that just stand out. Cecelia's performaces have pearls like unto her bridal tiara (here) though. Catch the most perfectly shaped F# ever recorded at 2:37, aw yeah!
Straordinaria! Sprizza energia e BELLEZZA da tutti i pori.

and will undoubtedly do so again when she returns in december 2010 with a
programe of Handle. Needless to say, I shall be there.

Bartoli just radiates joy. I love her.

@90lysander Ah yes! Isn't it wonderful? Compare to the companion (concert) performance by Bartoli, posted by Parsifalito; she just lets loose and Belts [it] out! I love her too!

MrJago80 1 year ago
