Roads in New Zealand are alot more windey and the fact is that you're twice as likely to die at 120 as you are at 100k's and hour. It keeps the road toll down too

I do beleive that higher limits suit many European, and even Australian highways. The simple fact is that New Zealand suffers from a vastly ranging myriad of highway types. Example SH1 is the main Highway from Cape Reinga to Bluff (spanning both North and South Islands). It ranges from 4-5 lane Motorways around Auckland, to narrow, winding two-lane roads around Taihape. The variance in road type combined with relatively relaxed driver training renders it unsafe to permit road usage above 100KPH.

The speed limit on this type of road in Germany is 100kph, the same as in NZ. Autobahns have a 130kph limit. At certain times when multiple road characteristics permit, that speed limit is removed, but this is a more and more irregular occurrence given the growing number of vehicles on German roads. Having been to Germany I took the time to learn their road rules, just as you should when visiting another country. If you speed in Germany the police will give you a ticket as well. Simple really!

I was in NZ two years ago and had a rental car on both islands. I remember one time I was on a motorway near Hamilton. There were a long line of cars and the motorway was ending and becoming two lanes so I stepped on it. I was up to 150 km/h. I read up on the road rules before I left, I could have gotten my Colorado license taken on the spot ! Most of the time I usually did about 120 km/h especially on the motorways. Surprised I didn't get any tickets for the three weeks I was there.
