I think de Mello is leading us to cultivate healthy desires, that is for God,via desire for peace love and compassion, We cannot detach ourselves from life itself, until we die, but we can seek healthy attachments.

It goes further into its own ideas and techniques etc but the teachings of self illusion, attachment, suffering, being in the moment etc are essentially the same. De Mello mixes it up with Christianity and Hinduism etc. He is great. His talks saved me when I was in a really dark time in my life.
