@Jarvis - my first comment DID make reference to the fact I am a former employee. It's still there at the beginning of this string so you can see for yourself.
There is no solidarity as I cannot relate to you or your plight. I felt the money I earned when I was at RMR was fair for the work I did. It was a big boost up from the pay I had at my previous jobs and I guess I kept that top-of-mind as it added some context. I think you would do much worse elsewhere and can't appreciate what you have!
I now live in the UK and do not have the luxury of living in East Vancouver where I can go to the picket line. I have gotten my facts from the newspapers (which should be a good source) and my knowledge of working at the company. I know more about the issues they face in that job having worked there for 2 years than you do from chatting with them for 5 minutes. When I was there I was threatened by the shop steward for not being interested in being in a union.
There has been nothing in the news. The issues are health care and overtime. I went down to the station on Terminal ( I live in the neighbourhood ) and talked to some of the workers. How about you get some facts straight before spouting off.
do you even know what the lockout is about ? It seems to me that you have been making the assumption from your first post that is all about the money. There are lots of other issues that could have brought the situation to this point.
Yes you are right, there are skills involved. However high paying jobs should come to those that work hard to get them (highly-skilled or educated positions). I wish you would take my whole message instead of disregarding one key part: the $15/hr is in ADDITION to tips. As I said, I was making $30k in 6 months at this job at 1999/2000 dollars. So when you factor in that they are probably making a lot more than that now, do you really feel they are poorly paid?
I do not work for Rocky Mountaineer but I believe that all work is valuable. You also make $ 15/hr sound like a fortune. And please don't denigrate someone's abilities by saying that education is the only thing that counts. I am over 60 & I have met a lot of " educated" morons in my life. Not everyone is cut out for this type of work. I know that I certainly never have been. Working with the public takes skills that you don't get in a classroom.
I am sorry if you think $30k (in 1999/2000 prices) is poor pay for for 6 months of work. I don't begrudge anyone decent pay, but let's make sure it is in scale with the job they are doing. What are Onboards making now, $15/hr? You make it sound like you guys are making minimum wage.
Any job with no educational requirements will never make as much as those that do, but that's just common sense. You probably also believe janitors in hospitals are worth the $20/hr they make!
and I guess your point is that because this was good enough for you then it should be good enough for them now. Typical of the attitude - rather than rejoice and hope for the best for others , let's begrudge them a good living and benefits. We are also talking about a company that offers luxury vacations but I guess you feel that the money should only flow one way - into the pockets of the already wealthy ?
I have been warned by Jarvisv6a that my comment will be deleted because they disagree with it and are not open to opposing views. This is what it said:
"We love our guests" but apparently not nearly as much as you love money. Look, I was an Onboard Attendant at RMR for 2 season in 1999 - 2000 and I was making $12.65/hr + making $750 per 4-day trip. That's pretty decent money now, let along 10 years ago for a job requiring no education. Greed knows no boundaries.

what a lot of people do not realize is that this is not the first time RMV has ruined employees lives.
They bought 3 companies that were doing a good business and within 5 years, brought those same 3 companies to ruins.
Grayline of Vancouver, Grayline of Banff, Grayline of Victoria and Thompson Hotel.
Thousands of people lost their jobs, some with 30 and forty years at the same job!
We should all be supporting the onboard attendants and SHUT THAT FREAKING TRAIN DOWN!

@ ASV - you have your opinion, and like I said offline, in a message to you - that's fine.
The workers will continue to organize - you're not part of it. Fine.
We know where you stand. Fine.
The workers have everything to gain by uniting in solidarity. You don't want to be part of it. Fine.
You diss the efforts by workers to improve their lot. Not fine.
Regards and solidarity forever.

@ ASV, your first comment now deleted made no reference to the fact that you were a former employee.
Further the direct message to you was sent in an effort to show respect to you.
In that message to you the importance of leveling up and not engaging in a race to the bottom was stressed.
In these times of austerity we need solidarity.

I do know because I have been following it in the media, "Wages and overtime are key issues in the dispute".
If you Google "Rocky Mountaineer Railtours Lock out"
