i have a silverface from the early 70's i think...my dad had it when i was a lil kid and was just wondering how often you should change the tubes?????
Its a hard call. Its not something that is set in stone since it depends on how much it was played... the tubes that are in there, and how hard the amp was played. Tubes made in the 50s and 60s can STILL be amazing sounding. If the amp sounds "tired" or "weak"... just buy new tubes and TEST. Your ears will tell you if it sounds better, or if the originals are still going strong.
SOUNDS GREAT!!!!!! I have a garnet Lil' Rock 30Watter, It's a rlly HUGE AMP. Built to get a really nice crunchy bass response. My guitar can sound almost as a high tuned bass guitar when the bass is cranked and treble is rolled off. I like cranking it to 8, can get close to a Vintage Marshall, just wish it had a mid knob :(. I want yer amp too, sounds rlly SRV.
Hey Tommy Kjr thnaks! I've been following your playing for a while! JUST KILLER! I've even got your album! HA! Wish you were here in the states more. Any plans of coming up here to the frozen Minnesota? :)
Hey Tyler, thanks for your reply! That's great you've got my album, where did you get it? I live in Texas now, so I'm in the States :) Hopefully I can go on tour sometime and visit you in Minnesota! Man I love your tone and style, very tasty! And your Super Reverb sounds amazing, I like that mod you did! Wish I had a Super, I would get it fixed like that! Thanks for your compliments! Check out my other videos on youtube, just type in my name and see the newest ones. Talk to you soon!
Cool to hear you're in the states! Hopefully you tour!
Just let me know if you get your hands on a super, I'll make you a deal on the mods. You were the type of player these mods were meant for and i'd get a kick to her you through one.
I have a PRRI that I want to get to sound closer to this (not volume, but tone). I've already ordered a larger OT. Do you think changing the phase inverter to a long-tail is necessary to make a Princeton sound like the larger black faces?
Its a master volume that is placed after the phase inverter tube. The Phase Inverter tube is a very important tube when you are cranking an amp. Its where the character of the drive is created.
I have a new Vibrolux Reissue, do you think if I got a strat (currently i have a les paul) would i be able to get that tone? cuz it sounds awesome! thanks for the video.
I don't think it will be quite there. This particular video, even thought I present it as the "before" in the before/after video pairing, had some work already done to it. EV speakers, special tubes, circuit changes give this video a great sound by itself.
Also, hate to say it, but the smaller Output transformer in the vibrolux will prevent the low end from being as bold, but it won't be TOO far off. Give it a try!
thanks alot! any recommendations on strats to check out? I've tried some of the new american series and american deluxes, but i feel the pickups are a little 'sterile sounding', not enough character.
Specific types of strats isn't the way to go about it. Simply going to a big music store with LOTS of strats and TRY THEM ALL UNPLUGGED! :) seriously. YOu'll quickly realize each is very different. Don't get caught up into details, just find one you think is super resonent and tasty sounding. THEN plug it in:) If you hate the sound plugged in, buy the guitar and experiment with different pickups.
You'd be surprised what being in control of the sound can do to the interpritation of volume. Never use earplugs. Might be a bad idea, but I haven't really noticed any hearing loss.
No. I have only used the H4 for that original cranked super video. The H4 adds a lot of room ambience, which sounds good, but I wanted to just hear the amps on their own. I now use a SM57 close-mic'd into a small mic-pre for all my videos.
ooh...I'm sorry. Those special Rotary switches are hard to find. I was lucky enough to have Hendrix come to me in a dream to tell me where to find one. But he only told me where that ONE was:)... .

I have this amp too...how does your house not blow up? lol....you turn down the volume knob on your guitar?
thedonace213 2 years ago
Can you belive, at the time, I was living in a Condo!? I'm sure my neighbors hated me.
Guitar knob is at 10 the whole time. But near the end of the video, I'm demonstrating the killer PPIV master.

That's gotta be really loud
popomczowzow 2 years ago
Thats why I then installed a PPIV into the amp!
gamedojo 2 years ago
What's a PPIV? Some kind of attenuator?
popomczowzow 2 years ago
PPIV = Post Phase Inverter Volume
Its a master volume that is placed after the phase inverter tube. The Phase Inverter tube is a very important tube when you are cranking an amp. Its where the character of the drive is created.
gamedojo 2 years ago
Man,do you have any schematics or a link that shows how that master volume AFTER the phase inverter is made?
PM me pls or place it here.
Thanks

Awesome tone. The screaming SRV/A.King riffs at 28 secs demonstrate some real texas tone.
Exactly what EV speakers are you using?

are you using the zoom h4 to record the audio here?
and if you are, would you recomend it for recording cranked amps?
if not, could you tell what you used here cause it sounds great
thanks

I just called him up and had a conversation with him. There is no "pre-set" that I ordered from. He simply wound the ohms to my liking.
