I find it funny how people whine about the possible damage to the vinyl DESPITE that author said it HIMSELF in the video. Way to state the obvious, gentlemen! I, for one, find it funny. I can play old, unwanted records when friends visit me. We like such tricks so.. thank you, mate, for uploading that! Was lots of fun. :D
@iamjonvlog sound is vibration in the air. When a record is recorded the vibrations are picked up by something sensitive to vibration which transfers those vibrations into grooves on a vinyl record. Those grooves are now a permanent recording of the size and shape of those vibrations (a.k.a. sounds). Then those grooves are applied to a needle, the needle begins to vibrate which is amplified by the phonograph (paper cone) and the vibrations (sounds) that were laid down are once more let into the air
I know this is bad for your record, but is this dangerous that it will kill the paper in one try? Like if I did this as an experiment once for about ten seconds, my birth certificate would come out damaged?
@GTech006 I don't think so. The reason the needle and paper works is because the needle transmits the vibrations directly to the paper. Same principle as old phonographs. With a stylus you wouldn't have a direct connection to the paper.
@GTech006 Hard to say. A needle like this is harder on a record than a legitimate stylus. I would never do this on a record I care about. I picked up the record in this video from a thrift shop.

Every time you use something: a record-player, a car, a computer or what you want, you slowly bring it to the end. But this way of playing a record is really stupid, and only can damage the record, just because you cannot keep it turning at the same speed, and with your hand you give irregular impulses to the player's mecanism. And where is the fun of it? I listen to my 78's (and to my microgrooves too) on modern machines (Denon, Numark, Dual) and for the 78's I use special Rega-styluses.
@78Maniac As I already said I know this can ruin records. I am not recommending this as a good way to play records! LOL That would be stupid. As I said before I don't care one bit about that record, and that's why I chose to use it in this demonstration. Anyone who thinks I am trying to recommend this as a good way to play music... come on seriously. I love my good LPs, and I would never ever attempt this experiment on them. Of course this is a stupid way to play records! It's a "party trick."
No interest. I really don't enjoy! As a disc-collector and a 78-rpm-lover, I say this is "bricolage", and the best way to destroy a record and the record-player's mecanism. Anyway the sound one gets out of this funny stylus, is awful, because the disc never turns at the right speed. If you want to break records which could be authentic documents, and deform there grooves, then go on.
@78Maniac As I said in the video, "Only do this on records you don't care too much about." In other words, I realize this is bad for the grooves. I DO NOT CARE about this particular record and that's why I didn't mind "ruining" it. Yes naturally the sound is awful. I didn't make this video to show how to get great sound. haha I was simply demonstrating the physical method by which a record player or phonograph emits music from a record. It's like a simple "science experiment."
@78Maniac That being said, I do understand the desire to preserve authentic documents. But don't forget that even playing a record with a real stylus gradually wears out grooves. Every time a record is played, it wears out a tiny bit more. And as far as ruining the turntable's mechanism... not in this case. Maybe it depends on your turntable, but my little demonstration here did nothing to hurt the mechanism of my Dual.
