  • Trippy...

  • This is sexy, stripping music...

  • Portishead is an old locked room with heavy black drapes over the windows; everything is ancient, scratched, broken and covered with dust and every thought you have is met with a tortured doubt and you can never escape.

  • @malevich2007 are you serious???? that's one of the greatest things i have read. how spot-on accurate and perfect

  • That very first picture, is it at Thomas Street, North Carolina?

  • Genius! Love this tune:)

  • great music...!

  • reminds me of being really stoned at college and never goin to any lectures... good times.

  • (kinda sick of all this gos ipod shit (:

  • Sikke noget lort.....

  • @skeetdk mener du det...? Elsker det

  • it scared my mom

  • Portishead's music was fucking terrifying when it first came out back in 1994, most bizzare hip hop, It was so groundbreaking and bleak. There was nothing like it beforehand. They have a very deep, heavy, powerful sound that is hard to explain. You feel like you are sucked into this extremely dark film noir world and you cant escape. Scarier than the self consciously trying- to- be -scary acts of the time.

So many trip hop acts sounded really tame compared to the sound they created.

  • @hundhun17 the sound they created didnt really have a label when they made it..i dont see how its even close to hip hop

  • @1ukjunglednbraver the low bass, scratching in the beginning, the rhythm, really? no hip hop? not labeling em but obviously its got somewhat of a hip hop vibe

  • @TheGreatGodMARS sorry i dont see the connection

  • @1ukjunglednbraver

That style of drum programming, record sampling & scratching, and deep bass didn't exist in the mainstream before hip hop went big in the ~5 years before this record. It's hard to imagine Portishead having a relative hit or even making this record without that trend.

Obviously those in hip hop acknowledge the connection, just look at how Portishead has been sampled and read some interviews.

  • @TheGreatGodMARS yep, absolutely agree. the backing track to Strangers demonstrates that train of thought even better.

  • @hundhun17 true

  • @hundhun17 Your description of Portishead is so excellent....

  • Очень смеялась,когда прочитала в одном из комментариев,что "эту песню моя собака боится"...

    Такое...весёленькое сообщение... :)))

  • @vishiquals its simple... pop - bad, everything else - good! including trip hop!!!

  • @vishiquals Yep, no real music industry. That just shows how much you know about music and what you listen to. Portishead are obviously just a band owned by "The Man". I play 49 Instruments, Including but not limited to, the Jazz flute, The Triangle, The Sitar and the Cowbell, of which, there is not enough.

  • @MrOhsay1

    Oh yeah, needs more cowbell!

  • THIS IS COOL DISHWASHING MUSIC...IT GETS THE JOB DONE QUICKER.

  • @Ms31EMo duuuude! sooo true!

  • @Ms31EMo my dishwashing song is Meaning of Life by Disturbed lol

  • their music makes me tear-up and smile like a lunatic (....weird)

  • @vishiquals shut up dude, youre a dick, the music you play is probably mad lame and thats why youre not famous, take your world music and jazz/soul and shove them far up your pretentious ass

  • @vishiquals Write a book of your life and maybe I'd be interested of what you say.

  • @vishiquals Do you just go around posting this to random songs? I've seen this cut/paste comment on several different videos now.

  • @Joshmusicvids Mine too, he was sleeping in my lap and just jumped up! The gong sound must have some high frequency that disturbs them.

  • great video, i liked your job ! beth's voice is amazing, awesome song.

  • Everyone just shut the fuck up about 'Trip Hop' It's just a stupid name invented by James Lavelle to describe his music!!!

  • I prefer to classify this song as Hard Trip Hop what do you thing about it?

  • sounds nice and dubby

  • LOST

  • When did they make this song?

  • @Juno36 '94

  • you just can't stick Portishead in a genre they just are who they are...they are their own genre....like Tool....they just defy every expectation...

  • @karizmadawnsmommy Lol Fuck tool

  • @YeZhik5 lmfao to each their own even if that person is probably an indolent tool themselves :)

  • Sounds like Portishead is using the same snare drum as Lars Ulrich on Metallica's St. Anger...

  • fantastic song..

    PS: amazing BASS!!

  • Real streets of Brooklyn shiiiit!!!!!

  • the music is dope to me i listen to hip-hop most the time so for me it'strange for me to love dis type of music but it sooooooooooooo unique

  • someone said they sound like radiohead... erm no. radio head sound like portishead, they have been round for many years, wen i was a child!

  • @nixiboo69

    way different but both cool

  • déesse de l'amour

  • I don't think there's anything wrong with being labelled. Portishead may not like to be labelled as Trip Hop but that's what they sound like, just makes it easier for us to find the music we like if we can search the genre and then lots of groups in that genre appear.

  • Sounds like radiohead...

  • sounds great as the razor blade slices your skin

  • People generally classify them as trip-hop, although Portishead themselves prefer not to be classified or labeled as anything.

  • @chatmaker12 well in a way everything must be labeled, lol you wouldnt want this just brung up in country music would you?

  • @chatmaker12 ...it is what it is......i make techno but dont tell me i make techno

  • people who appreciate this music. It's melodic art that transports you to feel the meaning of every word. And Radiohead does it as well.

  • @MrScissorhead got more?

  • This is trip-hop and not hip-hop. It's also incredible how people still confuse both styles, specially here in UK, where there's so many bands that adopted this style. Every time, I mention trip-hop, I've to mention that I'm not referring to hip-hop.

Btw, the Linkin Park tune is "Comfortable Numb" which is a cover of a Pink Floyd track and go nothing to do with this.

  • @thekidzcantfathom My good friend, do you confuse rock and blues. Rock was a white interpretation of the blues, almost 60 years ago. The problem is that the Brits don't recognise a sound of their own.

  • @BernardoDVX The sounds have changed, its good you understand that, but you can't deny who inspired them.

Blues musicians laid out a foundation that rock and roll musicians continued to build on, the same way hip-hop artist have created a bit of a foundation for trip-hop artist.

if people confuse rock with blues, trip-hop with hip-hop, i don't think its something you should be offended by, because one wouldn't exist with out the other....

  • @BernardoDVX ... and another thing: do you think that trip-hop could be a "white interpretation" of hip-hop?

  • hijos de su p cola

    esta incompleta

  • its trip hop not hiphop

  • i know they just didnt copy off of linkin park! this is nothing even close to linkin park!!!!!

  • Bristol based biznizz!!!

  • WHERE'S THE REST OF THE SONG !!

  • @85Silvana85 loooooooool

    good question:)
