@Interactivesystems: You are simply repeating a talking point without ever having looked at the study itself that makes that claim. Longer lifespans are no indication of health-care quality because they do not factor in early deaths due to auto accidents, gun-related deaths, etc., as well as the increased mortality of illegal aliens. U.S. costs are inflated mainly due to gov. intervention starting in 1965 and continuing until today.
Please tell me your source -- not a newspaper, but a study.
@Brutarius Gerard F. Anderson, Uwe E. Reinhardt, Peter S. Hussey and Varduhi Petrosyan, "It's The Prices, Stupid: Why The United States Is So Different From Other Countries", Health Affairs, Volume 22, Number 3, May/June 2003. Retrieved February 27, 2008. for a start.
Regarding the much-abused "general welfare" phrase, the best way to determine what it means is to go to the source: James Madison.
"With respect to the words 'general welfare,' I have always regarded them as qualified by the detail of powers connected with them. To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a metamorphosis of the Constitution into a character which there is a host of proofs was not contemplated by its creators."
From the actual text on the NARA site (The National Archives -- archives. gov)
Article 1, Section. 8.
"The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States"
What part of healthcare is NOT part of General Welfare?
Great comeback, that one.
If you have a factual comment to make, please feel free to do so and I'll discuss it with you.

I think somebody needs to read the constitution:
