ECW saved Pro Wrestling, it made the business more free when it comes to backstage and creative writing, not to mention the wrestlers had a say in what happens rather than the creative writers being completely isolated. ECW was the first american wrestling promotion that let the fans say what they want without being kicked out, ECW was about freedom, not a dictatorship of who has the ball in the court. Now the smarks on the other hand, they knew too much for they're own good.
I think MMA's recent popularity is what's hurting pro wrestling. THAT'S why WWE's gone all PG. All of their older fans would rather watch REAL fighting than not-so-real-fighting with bad storylines that only kids can get into. Vince has been quoted saying that they made changes to accommodate for the shift in demographics.
Personally, I find wrestling today damn near un-watchable. I'm thankful that the old stuff's available on DVD. Well, I'm off to watch Heartbreak & Triumph...

The internet has killed wrestling. If the internet was around in the 80's, Hulk Hogan would have been the most hated man in wrestling. He would get Cena "One Night Stand '06" hatred at every show to the point that he might even be shot. Austin would also be hated eventually. The reason why Cena is seemilingly universially hated amongst the Attitude Era virgins is becuase now they can voice their displeasure with Cena.

People always forget that ECW had tremendous pure wrestlers/wrestling in addition to the hardcore barbed wire flaming table matches. Some of their greatest matches had no weapons at all. Basically, fans expect more of wrestlers based on their own skewed recollections.

The original ECW saved wrestling from the toilet it was in in '94 and '95, and their product at the time was built on going against the grain, and it was something new that had never been seen in wrestling before, and I think thats why, in part, it succeeded. Today, there is really no promotion that is going against the grain. You have ROH, yes, but they're a purist promotion, and there is no 'rebellous' feel to it
honestly I have to say I liked the original ECW, I didn't like everything they did, but I liked most of their stuff. I think you are right though Truthslayer, the reason why ECW was so popular early was because they are different and the other two promotions were boring and ECW was something new.

Youtube Shooters are just people with an opinion, except they can broadcast theirs. The opinions were there before Youtube. The internet gave wrestling fans the ability to come together and voice what they do and don't like about wrestling.

Well said Truthslayer! To me, a YouTube "shooter" is just like every other wrestling fan here. We just got smarter on the wrestling aspect because of the internet. We don't overcriticize for the sake of overcriticizing. We watch and enjoy wrestling shows just like everyone else. If there's something we don't like, we will make our voice be heard.
I really agree with your views on ECW and how if it didnt go out of business it would of turned into a ROH style of wrestling while keeping some of the hardcore aspects. The (old) example I always use is Warrior/Savage at WMVII. Warrior looked like the man and most mainstream fans will remember that as his match, but it was Savage that completely put him over with his talent and wrestling match preparation.

Triple H is responsible for a lot of problems in WWE, one he's creative control over his character and he's a good reason that the World Title has lost its presige. Stanlez, I agree with that statement. HHH is trying to feel Flair's shoes but the part about Flair is he put on mostly back in his heyday 4 or 5 stars matches. Flair made Ronnie Garvin a legitable wrestler. Sure Flair used backstage politics but on the other hand he had plenty of classic matches and feuds. His feud with Dusty Rhodes (Yes Dusty back in the 80's was one of the best wrestler alive), Ricky Steamboat, Nikita Koloff, Sting, Lugar.
what killed wrestling was fucking ego. The NWO storyline in the beginning was totally classic. Sting hadnt said a word for a whole year. What killed WCW was the lackluster matches. Nobody wanted to sell. The only feuds that stick out was Savage vs DDP, the Booker T pushed, heck even Scott Steiner was the man back then. ECW treated their fans as smart. I love hardcore wrestling. It is fun to watch.
However I can watch Ric Flair vs. Sting in 1990 and enjoy it just as much if not more.
Or Flair vs. Steamboat in 1989.
DFlair vs. Funk was great too.
Hel, Hogan vs. Flair in 1994 wasn't that bad IMO.
Anyone noticing the trend here?

Youtube Shooters are just people with an opinion, except they can broadcast theirs. The opinions were there before Youtube. The internet gave wrestling fans the ability to come together and voice what they do and don't like about wrestling.
It's not the fans, or internet fans fault that WWE and TNA aren't delivering a product that we like. Maybe if they'd get off their ass and actually listen to the fan, things might change.

ECW existed because prowrestling got stale.
Youtube shooters exist because prowrestling is stale largely thanks to sports entertainment(the WWE).

Well said Truthslayer! To me, a YouTube "shooter" is just like every other wrestling fan here. We just got smarter on the wrestling aspect because of the internet. We don't overcriticize for the sake of overcriticizing. We watch and enjoy wrestling shows just like everyone else. If there's something we don't like, we will make our voice be heard.

I really agree with your views on ECW and how if it didnt go out of business it would of turned into a ROH style of wrestling while keeping some of the hardcore aspects. Just wish homicide would be a full time wrestler in ROH like he use to be. What a great heel he was and what great matches he had in ROH

The (old) example I always use is Warrior/Savage at WMVII. Warrior looked like the man and most mainstream fans will remember that as his match, but it was Savage that completely put him over with his talent and wrestling match preparation.

I don't why people say anything killed pro-wrestling. Is pro-wrestling really dead? We have two companies on TV, a handful of large indies that sell DVDs, and nearly every state in the country as a small independant that holds monthly shows in it.
What they need to say is --- changed pro-wrestling in a way I don't like and I'm going to fuss about it.

ECW? it was doomed to die without it, how much of ecws ideas/wrestlers etc did wcw and wwe take, alot, ECW you could say was the cause for the attitude era, and without that wresling was probably be doomed.

I am tried that the Internet Wrestling Community is use as a escape goat. Most Youtube Wrestling blogers like myself want simple improvements in prowrestling. A better Tag team divison a better women's divison a better Differant Talent from different countries. Yet We are steriod type as the bad guys that do not know shit about wrestling and we ask too much from a Prowrestling company like TNA or WWE

I don't see how a few thousand people watching a few of eachothers videos is going to really impact things. We are a mass of small groups in a giant fanbase of millions. We're the same as the group of kids who sit in their living room, watch Raw every week, and argue weather or not -blank- is still funny even though he's a jerk(heel) now; the ones who keep wrestling going. Only we do it over a computer instead of on our couch.

One factor that I would really say destroyed wrestling was when WWF bought out WCW.
Scott Steiner said it in a shoot: "We knew the wrestling business was fucked" and he was right because there was now only one big place to go.
Right now we have WWE, which is by far the biggest, and TNA which is a distant number 2

Yeah, I think ECW had its bad influences, but once WCW died, so did alot of jobs in wrestling and several chances for wrestlers to make a make a name for themselves, and thats what really hurt wrestling.

right on the spot with that one. Vince was so worried about putting wcw out of business that he didn't consider what would happen to the business if it actually happened. The best thing that could of happened is that he put wcw a seperate brand on another night and keep that audience that they had and i think the business would still be pretty good today but that never happened.

I think it does a lot of good, but i also think that guys like you (no offense) have a lot of influence that i don't think you're aware of. Unfortunately, the people grasp onto a lot of what you say both good and bad, and eventually someone's misguided theory can too easily be seen as fact. Not necessarily a knock on you tslay, i just think thats one of the pitfalls of the IWC.

i agree. there are alot of people that watch wwe and tna that only use the internet to check their official websites. when the promos for saveus came on, my aunt and my little brother had no idea who it was until they saw y2j the night he returned.
the internet isn't killing pro wrestling, its helping wrestling companies step up its game and can help prevent stupid gimmicks, bad angles, and it definitely helps promote all wrestlers as a whole.

Everything other than RAW and Smackdown, especially the website should be an open account of the business with all it's flaws and good things evident. Not kayfabed. Just like the TV industry. Cause what is the difference? Law and Order, CSI, Sopranos, everyone knows that's not real, doesn't lose any viewers does it? Why is wrestling afraid? Maybe then Vince and the industry would get the respect it deserves, when it stops insulting our intelligence.

You Tubers didn't kill the wrestling business, the WWE's reaction to the new "Smart" fan killed the wrestling business. Heyman speaks of a time when Vince asked him why Wrestling doesn't get the respect it does? Heyman told him it never will and Vince stormed out. I think the reason is they continue even in 2009 to insult our intelligence. Alienating millions. Only the syndicated TV shows should be kayfabed.

Constructive criticism is a good thing only the people that are suppose to be listening for example TNA Management; are obviously asking guys that work for them that are between 35 & 60 that don't know how younger and more knowledgeable fans think or what they like, they are about as far away from current popular culture and the youth as MC Hammer... unless they are targeting fans that want superheros, Christy Hemme and no finishes these are the three signs of the pro wrestling Apocalypse !!!!!

ECW, in my opinion, saved the independent pro wrestling scene. Youtube shooters just spoke their opinions about their likes and dislikes. If WWE doesn't produce quality, then the "dislikes" increase. So I feel like neither of the two "killed" the wrestling business!

A lot of things has killed the wrestling business. But for someone to say "YouTube Shooters" and "ECW" did is truly idiotic. Triple H is responsible for a lot of problems in WWE, one he's creative control over his character and he's a good reason that the World Title has lost its presige. And i've said this time and time again that the era now in WWE is just like WWE in the mid 90's. That's when I started watching wrestling, looking back now I can't believe how half of the shit they did was bad.

Stars weren't getting pushed and terrible gimmicks were being wasted on people. And overrated superstars like Hulk Hogan were being pushed only to sell T-Shirts. I only hope something wakes Vince McMahon up again so he turns his product around like he did in the start of the Monday Night Wars.

Stanlez, I agree with that statement. HHH is trying to feel Flair's shoes but the part about Flair is he put on mostly back in his heyday 4 or 5 stars matches. Flair made Ronnie Garvin a legitable wrestler. Sure Flair used backstage politics but on the other hand he had plenty of classic matches and feuds. His feud with Dusty Rhodes (Yes Dusty back in the 80's was one of the best wrestler alive), Ricky Steamboat, Nikita Koloff, Sting, Lugar.

what killed wrestling was fucking ego. The NWO storyline in the beginning was totally classic. Sting hadnt said a word for a whole year. What killed WCW was the lackluster matches. Nobody wanted to sell. The only feuds that stick out was Savage vs DDP, the Booker T pushed, heck even Scott Steiner was the man back then. ECW treated their fans as smart. ECW didnt give us any bullshit. ECW revolutionized wrestling. Look at ECW major stars they could all work well. I cant say the same about WWE and
