Even as a bass-baritone, I am continuously inspired by Renee Fleming's voice and emotional interpretation. I think it absolutely stunning that she adds her own flavor to this piece. The purpose of performance is to make a piece your own, not to mimic other popular performers in the process, and I think that Ms. Fleming is one of the most original and inventive artists in the world today. I truly love her, and next time she comes to Rochester, NY, I'm going to meet her! =)
@WaitonAlsoSings, I simply have to agree with you, both in voice type and thoughts about her and her way of doing music. I envy you 'cause you're gonna have the great pleasure to see her singing. Ow my goodness, I'd like so much to hear her in person! So congrat. for you, and enjoy it a lot! and thank u for the comment! :)
Anyone who doesn't love this must be an idiot of some kind or another. Renee "owns" this song. 'not sure what francophiles think of it, but this lady is beyond fabulous.
Renee is blessed with the voice of an angel and this is her own unique interpretation of the Faure classic. Some pseudo soprano snobs may not agree but that's their problem!
if you cant do what she does then dont say anything if she wanted to scoop that was her choice so build a bridge and get over it...she did a damn good job on this song...lets see you try!
actually yes! i can! i sing opera and am studying this song just recently actually and you know im not a fan of hers but this is how she chose to sing it so...if you can do better do it.
lmusubramaniam is right, scooping i this repertoire is completely wrong. Fleming displays her lack of understanding of the style of Faure. Her sentimental approach puts herself first and the the song second, unforgiveable in a supposed great singer, an all too common manner of ¨interpretation¨ these days
That's what you think, but there are lots of people who like it a lot. So, you don't need to put that comment. If you don't like, don't watch, otr if you don't like, at least say why you don't like it. Give reasons, not just a silly sentence like that! And enjoy the ones you like! By the way, please, can you cite me some good interpreters for this song, in your opinion? I wanna listen to them and try to 'educate' my taste. Bye!
Check out Apres Un Reve by Veronique Gens. She is French so the pronunciation is more relaxed. And she actually understands the lyrics of the song better and therefore has a more appropriate interpretation.
@lmsubramaniam I do agree with Imsubramaniam, she is scooping all over the place. She does have a beautiful voice, and I would love to hear her sing this song sans scooping. Despite the tremendous beauty of her voice, she does ruin the style. In listening to her, the continual scooping gets in the was and is rather disturbing. Ok, it does seem to be something particular to Renée. It does not disturb me as much in opera, but here it is definitely contrary to the style.
The little nuances she puts in between some of the words... it's absolutely breathtaking. For example, right after "je" in "je revais le bonheur." And the lilt she does in the middle of "des songes." And my personal favorite, connecting "radieuse" to "Reviens" and squeezing every little bit out of that "Reviens."
Thank you for posting this stunning rendition. And Renee, thank you for your artistry!
Ow,my dear! I know what yu mean! She's really fantastic and here much more than'ever! I appreciate your words and continue to listen to the great Rennee! Thank you for commenting too! :)
My dear, sorry for my mistake, and it was a big one. The pianist is one of the greatest Jean-Yves Thibaudet. I love him, both of them. And thank you for calling my attention on my fault.
I think Faurè would approve! : )

I love this version and the Veronique Gens version of this song! They're both so unique and beautiful in their own ways.

Non ce n'est pas tres interessant.Bien sur la voix est belle mais Veronique Gens fait bien mieux sans oublier Crespin : la version originale.

Amazing!! I'm a soprano currently learning this song, and to hear a professional singing so beautifully is astounding.

Beautiful voice, but It's too slow and too loud for my taste : not dreamy enough. My favorite versions still remain Gens & Stutzmann.

@WaitonAlsoSings No wonder you aren't a world renowned classical singer 'cause your grasp of aesthetics is so undeveloped.

Fleming just showed she knows nothing !

WILL SHE EVER STOP SCOOPING? this style of music specifically should not have the kind of scooping she gives. yuck! she sounds like shes wailing.
