I have read that this is Turk Murphy sing and that he also did the arrangement. It seems that he was a good friend of Bud Luckey. Until today I didn't know Turk was involved with Sesame Street. :)
I might be mistaking, but I think it was Bud Lucky who did the animation and singing in this. Bud Lucky now works for Pixar and he was one of the character designers for Woody in Toy Story and he also wrote, directed, and did the voices in Boundin' The short film attached to The Incredibles and he also did the voice of Rick Dicker in The Incredibles.

@hugh397 I do understand. I have sung the last line of this song for the last 30 years. I was born in 1972. The familiar scratchy voice of the singer and the childhood memories this brings back are indescribable. I always found the discount store part funny.
