The reason it's called "Big Yellow Taxi" it because it is a poem by Joni Mitchell. It is about how when she was on vacation in Hawaii, she opened her window and saw that the beautiful mountains and forests had been destroyed by D.D.T., a gas used to kill bugs, now illegal because it was found to be harmful to humans. D.D.T. killed all the trees in the process, and they put an enormous parking lot there.

I was studying this song in Science and the real meaning is not what you think it is, it's about preserving and what is going to happen to our world in the future, as in "Pave paradise, put in a parking lot" as in cut down the trees to make a parking lot, etc. It's really interesting if you know the real meaning. When the original singer says "A big'ol taxi stopped and took my old man(Not exact) it beens a bulldozer came and destroyed the all the wild life and nature. Thumbs up for everyone sees
