  • How many rollers do you usually use when you roller set your hair?

  • @omololasho Hi. To do the whole head, I usually need at least 24 rollers, more like 28-30

  • this was the best

  • this is so random but I have that PJ set! lmao my mama bought it for me in blue years ago!! Hair looks great btw!

  • this is called spiral set not a roller set..But its looks nice

  • You and your hair is so beautiful. Thanks 4 sharing. Peace and love.

  • Thanks for the tip..btw you are a very pretty girl

  • @dmaliha41 Thank you. :)

  • what aloe vera product do you use?

  • @chinouyamale I can't remember. I think it was J/A/S/O/N aloe vera gel.

  • You're a beautiful lady. Love your nappy 4 b hair. Thanks for tips.

  • @justme65196 thank you!

  • @justme65196 kool my hair is very thick and curly and i'm an african australian lol

but lyf is really tough with my hair and i'm only 12 it hurts me to see all the other gurls with longer hair than me ,please help me! =(

  • @mizchocolatey Oh, it's okay, girl. Long hair is very minor in the scope of things. But if you want it, you can get your hair to grow longer. Just be very gentle when you comb. We are so used to combing roughly. Be really careful, try to minimize snapping sounds because that is your hair breaking. Wear it in styles that minimize tangling so you won't have to break hairs to get them untangled. And a little patience. :)

  • are u shona

  • @tkuwaza No, I'm not. Just borrowed a Shona word for my user name.

  • Hello Mwedzi... LOVE YOUR HAIR!!! What kind of rollers are these? I'd like to know the actual names, so I can get them. Thank you :-)

  • @mybrownface Thanks. Not sure, I think they are flexi rods or flex rods.

  • @mybrownface I think you can get them at sallys beauty supply

  • thank you for posting this video...my mom was on my back to get rid of rollers but I am stuck with my stuff and do not want to throw anything away...very good tutorial...

  • @tealeh2 thanks. hope it helps

  • I think it would have been nice to see the final result but with your entire head styled and done so that we would know what it looks like completely when it's all done. I see the half of your hair styled already but I would have liked to see the whole thing.

    Thank you for your video!

    God bless you!

  • @Denisehealthnut No problem. Maybe one day I will do a video with my whole head roller set. I only was making curls for the bangs. The rest I wore in a bun and did not put rollers in. I have another video with that final result called "the mega bun".

  • @angi0517 Yes, you can use regular rollers. I don't like sponge rollers myself, but I have used the hard perm rods. I've been natural most of my life. I don't have a set group of products that I use.

  • Thank you I've been wondering how to use those things...I bought a lot of them at the dollar store without knowing how to use them :)

  • Beautiful, SIs!

  • that was nice, thanks for the info :$

  • Awesome!!

  • Great TUTORIAL I needed the step by step... CANT WAIT TO TRY MINE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I like roller too

  • plp are saying its old fashion but its the still seel the rollers so its not

  • this was a good video. i'm not good at doing hair so i need step by step instructions. many flexi rod videos did not actually show how to put them in. Thanks!!!

  • This video looks very old fashion

  • lol it does and ppl are dumb for giving you 3 negative thumbs lol i gave you a thumb up

  • yes it does. my mom showed me the exact same way when i was a kid. in the 80's.

  • thanks for sharing this, i always wondered how to get the roll started. thanks!

  • just wondering what type of aloe vera gel you use to set the your hair?

  • I think I was using J/A/S/O/N aloe vera. Actually, I find I don't really need it.

  • you are lucky, my hair would break the roller some how.

i had a fight with it todaay, a lot of hairolders have fallen. Gosh i need help.

  • thank you so much!!!!! i've finally found out how to do my hairstyle for the first day of school :)

  • I LOVE that you use the word FUZZ rather than FRIZZ. The word "frizz" is the most commonly misused hair term in the industry. Fuzz is much more accurate description..

Frizz means forming into a mass or tightly curled hair which is what our hair is naturally anyway.

  • Looking good before you even curl your hair. Good start for somebody.

  • It's not just African Americans that don't wash their hair everyday. It's damaging for all hair types, especially long, thick, or curly hair. I'm half white/half asian and I have never washed my hair daily with shampoo. My hair is really thick and long so I only wash it once a week with shampoo and in between I conditioner-only wash it.

  • Our hair doesn't produce natural oils, so our hair doesn't get as greasy as yours does everyday. Some of us wash seldomly, but that's only to conserve the synthetic oils that we do put in. Dry hair breaks! We don't want that, especially as hard as it is to manage our hair, and as long as it takes to grow. I have to wait months before I have a new inch.

  • our hair does not take long to grow, the texture may show an illusion of maybe half an inch of grow due to the kinky nature but in reality when u stretch it is actually an inch.

There are a lot of untrue myths about black hair and thats one that is completely untrue. The chemicals ie. perm, texturizer we add to our hair prevents it from growing due to breakage. out hair does grow as i am sure u;ve noticed a need to put cream on new growth every 6 weeks.

  • I wash mine when it starts to feel dirty. so that can be 2x a week. If i am wearing my hair pinned up, then it is protected from the elements and remains clean--then i will just wash once a week. Our hair is a good type of devil. Some complications and some pluses

  • yess dudee !

it is true i lived in Ga last year and

the girls in my class told me that they only wash their hair once every monthh

  • Our hair doesn't produce natural oils, so our hair doesn't get as greasy as yours does everyday. Some of us ash seldomly, but that's only to conserve the synthetic oils that we do put in. Dry hair breaks! We don't want that, especially as hard as it is to manage our hair, and as long as it takes to grow. I have to wait months before I have a new inch.

  • yes

  • And i wash 2x a week. It differs from one woman to the other.

  • we don't need too. white women or white people have to wash their hair everyday because their hair is oily and attract lice....

  • that was unnecessary

  • Indeed; not necessary to make mean remarks...

  • It isn't that their hair attracts lice, it's just that because their hair is straight the lice is able to latch onto the hair strands. It doesn't happen to black people in American bc we are still the minority. However, in Jamaica (where I am from) black people can and do get head lice and that is bc that species has adapted to our hair type. In addition lice would not like oil bc it is difficult for them to "breathe."

  • I dont know which part of Jamaica you're from but i have never had that problem. Lice! I have bever heard of or even seen anybody with lice.

  • It depends on the woman, but many don't. Our hair doesn't get oily like straight hair does; on the contrary, it's so naturally dry that we frequently put oils on it trying to compensate. I wash once a week.

  • pardon my ignorance sistas...when yous talk of natural hair ,are referring to curled-up un-straightened hair ?...being male i "don't know"much apart from Afro & locki...interesting vid though

  • Thanks. Usually "natural hair" means afro-textured hair that does not have a chemical relaxer in it. When it comes to styling, when people say "natural styles", they usually mean on hair that is neither chemically straightened nor heat straightened (flat ironed, pressed).

  • hey i love you channel what does mwedzi mean, where do you trace your cultural origins?

  • thanks!. Mwedzi means "moon" or "month" in Shona, spoken in Zimbabwe. I'm black American, but studied there for a semester in undergrad.

  • Thanks so much for this. I just bought these curlers today and I will try them out tonight.

  • Do you have a video of your big choP?

  • Nope, I never did a big chop.

  • How long have you been natural

  • I've been natural most of my life, all except a few years in my teens. I just started trying to learn about my hair in 07.

  • Thanks! Where did you go to find out information about your hair. I'm natural and plan on staying that way. I currently have braids in my hair but want a change.

  • H, great vid,\ I have a hard time making the bun in my hair it does not come out as nice as yours : ( need a little help)

  • sorry to hear that. what exactly do you think is going wrong? i mean, what help do you need?

  • Thanks for the tips. I have recently been doing it myself. People who say they specialize in natural hair in Tampa really don't. Following tips like yours has jump started my hair to growing. Now I have healthy big fro that I can put in various styles.

  • Wow, that's a real compliment. Thank you so much.

    I'm afraid of stylists.

  • DAMN LOOK AT THIS!! This makes me so happy seeing sistas with enough courage AND pride to post a video that isn't about relaxing hair and all that other garbage.

Thank you for this so much. With all of these other videos I know little girls of color would think that perming and other destructive chemicals are the only way to go. Thank you for showing that that's not the case.

    Much love sis.

  • ur pretty.... gunna go look at your other videos. nice.

  • you are so pretty =] and so is ur hair!

  • Your hair is very stretchy!

  • Your hair is soooooooo pretty! And your face is too! Oi oi! Natural ROX!! <3

thanks for the lesson, hun! :)

  • Excellent!

  • What a great tutorial. You did a very clear job of explaining this. I have never seen those curlers before, but I would like to try it!

  • thank you so much. I just saw these rods at the dollar store...I am off to try a few sets. they have a variety of different size rods.

  • your hair is the bomb

  • I finally got those rollers! They had a bunch of those in different sizes. I'll show you the results in my next vid.

  • Oh, wow... I can't wait until I have that much hair! How long is it stretched?

  • At that time it was around 10-11 inches stretched.

  • Thank you sooooo much for showing me how to use these for spirals :D It never ocurred to me!

  • i LOVE this. i was looking for a cute style for evening..sometihng different than the braid out i do for everyday. I found it here. thanks!

  • that's what i'm talking about!

    natural black hair power!!

  • you have beautiful hair!!!!!!!! your video helped me a lot !!!-THATS WHY I WENT TO THE SHOP LAST TIME TO BUY ME THESE ROLLERS:thank u very much.

  • I wish I had stumbled across this video last night. I used flexi rods, didnt spiral them, and I used a water based product. I havent had a perm in two years and Im still trying to get the hang of wearing and styling my natural hair. Thanks for the video.

  • you have really lovely hair and i think your vid is perfect for someone with no clue how to use flexi rods *raises hand*. nice job.

  • how did you get your hair into that big bun in the back? its adorable!

  • aye girl, i didn't know you had a yt page too! lol i love you on NP!

  • i like your hair

  • Wonderful. Love your unique Black hair. Just beautiful our hair is.

  • What kinda rollers are those? I've never seen those before.

  • They are called flexi rods or flexi rollers. You can get them at regular beauty supply stores or order them online. I got a bunch for cheap from Ebay.

  • oh ok. thanks =) your hair looks really nice.

  • are you zimbabwean?? ur name (mwedzi) sounds zimbabwean

  • I'm not Zimbabwean but studied there for a semester. I chose a word from Shona for my username.

  • CUTE!

  • Hey mwedzi I love your hair, I know you from cnappymenow

  • What type of Aloe Vera Gel

  • I have JASON, but I don't think it matters. Some people dislike non-pure aloe so they may use only those that say 99% or 100% pure aloe.

  • those rollers work well with dreds. They are perfect for natural hair

  • How did you do the back bun of your hair

  • Thank you so much for this, I am getting married next week and I have some of these rollers and I thought they were only for Caucasian people..

It has been favourited so I can do this for a fringe!

    Thank you :)

  • good for yooooooooooooooooooooooouuu

  • Hey. Just stopping by from lhcf & NP. I loved your tutorial :-)

  • Many thanks!!!! I usually wash my hair then twist with hairpins and always thought this caused breakage. I was excited to try this new alternative and what amazing results, I tried last night with the intention to double strand twist my hair today but my hair was so cute i have to rock that style today!! My new routine is pre pooing, wash with black soap apply shea butter then roller set! drastic difference in hair. I've been natural 15 yrs and loved every moment of it!

  • What does black soap & shea soap do 4 hair?

    Thx.

  • Great instruction video. Where do you get the flexible rollers?

  • it's my favorite lady!!!

  • omg! wow, i love ur hair, i've seen ur fotki a few times.

  • This a very good instructional video. Nice hair! :~)

  • OMG.. your hair is sooooo beautiful.. cant wait to get to that length.. what to u do it keep it so healthy?

  • Thank you. Hmmm, I'm not sure. Just wash and condition at least once a week. I'm in something that could be called a "protective style" 25-50% of the time. The only thing I can really think of that may be helping is that I don't use heat. I haven't straightened my hair for years. Occasionally I'll blow dry it on medium heat, usually not even all the way dry, just to cut down the drying time.

  • my hair is just like yours..does washing it once a week dry it out? i do it once every 2 weeks and everyone iv talked to said thats either to little or to much...whats your opinion?

  • Did I ever reply to this? I wash my hair at least once a week. Maybe once every 4-5 when the weather's hotter.

  • OMG your hair is beautiful I would never have the patience to do that.

  • Yeah, doing the whole head is tedious. But once you know how, doing the bangs should only take a few minutes. It's the waiting to dry part that's annoying.

  • Your hair is beautiful! I love it! Great video!

  • Hi, I follow your knitting blog knitensity, I am a knitter who has also is natural. I also have also seen you on Ralvery. Did you know there was a natural hair group there too? Good job on the videos. I really like all the natural hair care ones they have been so helpful and I am so glad you decided to make some because I have always loved your hair from seeing and reading about it on your blog.

  • Hey, another knitter! I didn't know there was a natural hair group on Ravelry. I'ma look for it, but if I don't find it soon, please send me an invite. Same user name. *off to see your FO's*

  • wow your hair is so thick and healthy looking!

  • I wasn't sure how those flexi-rods worked. Thanks for the tutorial :)
