Seattle won't get an arena in Seattle anymore.Stern says that he wants it in Bellevue. So we will have to build it there. Also your new NHL can be in Seattle as long as it is not in Key Arena. Remodeling Key Arena isn't the answer. You have to rebuild it from scratch. So that means you will have to build an NHL arena by Quest/Safeco. Key arena has no real parking, no close access to the freeway, in small neighborhood. So looks like show is over at the KEY Arena area!

Wow! Key Arena, a building built back in the 60's and then renovated in the 90's. That's fucking amazing. So they really haven't done much to the arena in about 14 years? Well, hell with the league for wanting them to finally build a new arena or at least seriously give this old school dump a major facelift. David Stern was dishonest in his comments to the nation about Seattle. When the commish of a sport can tell mistruths than he needs to be replaced. Many people in the nation still think Seattle did not support the Sonics because David Stern would make comments and then hide out. What should be noted is that Bettman used to work with Stern as an executive in the NBA before becoming the NHL commish in '93. If you asked me I'd say he's just as bad as his buttbuddy that's running the NBA when you consider what the NHL has gone through during his reign. (season-canceling strike, something the NBA never experienced, bad expansion and relocation of teams, weak TV ratings, and up until the major rule changes 3 years ago a decline in the quality of offensive play.)

Shultz made a killing off selling the Sonics. They made 150 million in 5 years. Als, many in the ownership group leveraged into it and put down 1 million but walked away with 10 million. Clay Bennett paid way to much for the Sonics. The minoruty ownership group made Shultz get the promise from Clay Bennett of keeping the team in Seattle. Bennett even told them he was a man possessed and would do whatever he had to to keep the team in Seattle. What a lying scumbag he turned out to be.
In response to load the trucks. Shultz bought the team knowing the lease was in place for having just remodeled Key Arena a few years earlier. Shultz paid 200 million and had the team for 5 years. Shultz sold the team to Bennett for 350 million. The Sonics never had a season where they lost money of did not have fans. Shultz made horrible decisions and put a lousy team on the floor. The fans kept coming. Shultz demanded and got a break on the lease he was complaining about.

When was the Key Arena renewed? - not too long ago I think. It's not that old, ugly or bad and I've noticed that the seats are real close to the court which is good for the fans. In 2005 I saw some playoff games vs the Spurs and the commentators said that the Key Arena was the loudest place the had been to the whole year and they couldn't even hear the reft whristle. Hope that Seattle (and Vancouver for that matter) will get an NBA team again one day..

While visitin the Seattle area last March I got to check out a Sonic's game at Key Arena. Although not as big, flashy, or fancy as some other NBA arenas. I liked it a lot with the recent renovations. Not to mention, the fans, atmosphere, air guitar competitions, boom squad etc all made it an enjoyable experience. I plan on moving to Seattle and its sad to know I won't have a b ball team around to root for. WHY OKLAHOMA!?

All just rumor at this point but... Apparently The Sonics have agreed to leave all team historical treasures, the Supersonics name, logo, colors etc. in Seattle. Cash settlement rumored to be $75mil, which will be reduced if Seattle receives another NBA franchise within a specified time period. Schultz has agreed to halt any legal proceedings against the owners and the NBA has promised to get the city another franchis as soon as a new or updated venue is in place.

Let me be the first to welcome the Oklahoma Orangutans into the National Basketball Association. I'm probably in the minority, but I think the NBA will be a success in Oklahoma City. The NBA is the one league that seems to work in smaller cities (Sacramento, Portland, San Antonio, Orlando, New Orleans, Salt Lake City, etc). There's no doubt Bennett bought the team hoping the Washington legislature would do exactly what it did. But the team was losing millions in the Key. Not big enough and the worst part was no luxury suites to sell for the big bucks. That's why Schultz sold. I still say if the Sonics had gotten an arena, Bennett would have sold, made some quick money and went away. He would have had no other choice. And don't you think the majority of the owners are greedy?That's how they got to be owners.
I do believe owners are just that owners, not necessarily fans of basketball. I dont think the arena mattered. I think it was the way Clay was able to get the team moved, his only legal justification was the arena is what kept the profits low. I think more could have been done by the city leadership. But they will find out the ramifications of losing the team when they see the difference this fall.
The City of Seattle has dropped their case against the Sonics and reached a settlement with the team which allows the team to move immediately to Oklahoma City. Rumors abound but apparently the settlement includes Seattle building a new or upgrading an existing arena with a promise from the NBA of an expansion team within 5 years. Stay tuned! Seattle won't get an arena in Seattle anymore.Stern says that he wants it in Bellevue. So we will have to build it there. Also your new NHL can be in Seattle as long as it is not in Key Arena. Remodeling Key Arena isn't the answer. You have to rebuild it from scratch. So that means you will have to build an NHL arena by Quest/Safeco. Key arena has no real parking, no close access to the freeway, in small neighborhood. So looks like show is over at the KEY Arena area!

I actually don't understand the anger at Stern or the other owners for the Sonics move. Why should the NBA give a shit if a team wants to move? OKC proved that it was a viable market during Katrina. So what other interest is there for the NBA?
The Thunder so far are making more money than the Sonics had been so why should it matter to Stern or other owners whether the team is in Seattle or OKC?

Wow! Key Arena, a building built back in the 60's and then renovated in the 90's. That's fucking amazing. So they really haven't done much to the arena in about 14 years? What should be noted is that Bettman used to work with Stern as an executive in the NBA before becoming the NHL commish in '93. If you asked me I'd say he's just as bad as his buttbuddy that's running the NBA when you consider what the NHL has gone through during his reign. (season-canceling strike, something the NBA never experienced, bad expansion and relocation of teams, weak TV ratings, and up until the major rule changes 3 years ago a decline in the quality of offensive play.)

Shultz made a killing off selling the Sonics. They made 150 million in 5 years. Als, many in the ownership group leveraged into it and put down 1 million but walked away with 10 million. When was the Key Arena renewed? - not too long ago I think. It's not that old, ugly or bad and I've noticed that the seats are real close to the court which is good for the fans. In 2005 I saw some playoff games vs the Spurs and the commentators said that the Key Arena was the loudest place the had been to the whole year and they couldn't even hear the reft whristle. Hope that Seattle (and Vancouver for that matter) will get an NBA team again one day..

Seattle will not see another NBA team as long as Stern is the commish so you don't have to worry about that. Why should they? They took their last one for granted and lost it for that reason. If they want to do things that way then Stern has no problem with it, all it means is NO NBA IN SEATTLE...that's all. No biggie. OKC has been earning major brownie points with the league since 05' and Seattle has all but killed their relationship with the league. God, what a wonderful world. I love it.

While visitin the Seattle area last March I got to check out a Sonic's game at Key Arena. Although not as big, flashy, or fancy as some other NBA arenas. I liked it a lot with the recent renovations. Not to mention, the fans, atmosphere, air guitar competitions, boom squad etc all made it an enjoyable experience. I plan on moving to Seattle and its sad to know I won't have a b ball team around to root for. WHY OKLAHOMA!?

My hometown lost their team in the 50's they have been trying to get a team back since. And times are different, getting a team back into a city is harder than it looks, its easier as clay showed to pay for a team and move them somewhere new than to build your own team.

It seems apparent to me that Stern never liked Seattle or the Northwest for that matter. He has even tried to maneuver on the Portland Trailblazers as well. Maybe he will try to move them from Portland too! Stern can stick it! The only way Seattle will get a team is when Stern steps down as commissioner.

All just rumor at this point but... Apparently The Sonics have agreed to leave all team historical treasures, the Supersonics name, logo, colors etc. in Seattle. Cash settlement rumored to be $75mil, which will be reduced if Seattle receives another NBA franchise within a specified time period. Schultz has agreed to halt any legal proceedings against the owners and the NBA has promised to get the city another franchis as soon as a new or updated venue is in place.

Let me be the first to welcome the Oklahoma Orangutans into the National Basketball Association. I'm probably in the minority, but I think the NBA will be a success in Oklahoma City. The NBA is the one league that seems to work in smaller cities (Sacramento, Portland, San Antonio, Orlando, New Orleans, Salt Lake City, etc). Places you wouldn't want to live, but the local yokels fill the arenas.

Although in Oklahoma I was a Sonics fan back in the day. I loved Shawn Kemp, almost as much as I've always hated the Lakers. I'm so glad that Boston kicked their ass. But I must admit, like most Oklahomans the Hornets stole my heart. The team to be named later has that to deal with. The team to be named later has a ton of young talent that seem to be really good kids, hopefully they will be as genuine as CP3. I really hope Seattle returns to the NBA, could be a helluva rivallry.

There's no doubt Bennett bought the team hoping the Washington legislature would do exactly what it did. But the team was losing millions in the Key. Not big enough and the worst part was no luxury suites to sell for the big bucks. That's why Schultz sold. I still say if the Sonics had gotten an arena, Bennett would have sold, made some quick money and went away. He would have had no other choice. And don't you think the majority of the owners are greedy?That's how they got to be owners.

I do believe owners are just that owners, not necessarily fans of basketball. I dont think the arena mattered. I think it was the way Clay was able to get the team moved, his only legal justification was the arena is what kept the profits low. I think more could have been done by the city leadership. But they will find out the ramifications of losing the team when they see the difference this fall.

The City of Seattle has dropped their case against the Sonics and reached a settlement with the team which allows the team to move immediately to Oklahoma City. Rumors abound but apparently the settlement includes Seattle building a new or upgrading an existing arena with a promise from the NBA of an expansion team within 5 years. Stay tuned! The arena, upgrades and practice facility will end up costing the people of OKC about $220mil TOTAL. And, it will all be debt-free when completed. If done right Seattle can accomplish the same thing although maybe a little more expensive, (but with the larger sales tax base in Seattle they could probably do it quicker) have the Key paid off by the Sonics, still have the team name, colors and historical treasures to lure a new franchise to the city pretty quickly. I hope they do, for the fans.

The fact that Seattle still owes $35mil of the 12 year old $100mil renovations is crazy. I would be pissed if our city leaders did that to us. The Ford Center was paid for the day it opened thnks to a short-term 1 cent sales tax approved by voters. The $121mil to upgrade the arena for long-term use by the NBA and constructing a seperate $25mil practice facility will be paid for by another 1 cent sales tax, this time for 15 months.
