I would suggest reading some material about the monitor. And ask the person your buying it from. And being prepared before you buy it. That's all stuff I did before buying mine.

Overall it depends on the monitor itself. Mine was wild caught, and I'm sure that had something to do with it preferring meat over vegetables. I would feed mine pinkys when it was younger, and as it grew older I obviously increased the size of the mouse. Mine wouldn't eat dead mice too often, however I've seen monitors who have no problem with that. You can feed them vegetables, although I didnt give mine many. And you have to control their diet as they are prone to obesity.

Large mammal predators often don't know what to do with something that doesn't run and isn't their regular prey. The monitor just marches up and challenges them, so the lions assume that it has the strength to back it up. If they do know what it is, they may associate it on some instinctual level with infected bites. Even a minor injury can stop you from running down an antelope.
