I remember we bought the album seen at 2:39... I listened to it constantly although I didn't understand a word of French (I was about 9) and practically memorized every song on it. I sent a fan letter to her and eventually got a postcard back telling me nuns could not return private correspondence, but Happy Easter anyway!
This isn't exactly "Soeur Sourire singing 'Dominique'". It's part of a (Dutch/Flemish-language) television documentary about the tragic life of Jeanine Deckers, and it shows her singing one verse of "Dominique" starting at 1:43. We also hear some translations of "Dominique", which was a sensational world success in the early 60s, remembered by all of us who were around then. However, this clip also has some other lovely songs by Jeanine Deckers which were not so well known.
@Naclement: It was famous worldwide, Soeur Sourire was even in the hit charts with 'Dominique'. Besides, we know Edith Piaf, too, and Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour, Francoise Hardy...
@Naclement Im 40 years old now and I can still remember hearing it on television when I was 10 in New York. A Hollywood movie called The Singing Nun with the main actress being Debbie Renyolds was made in 1965 so that caused the song to be played in all easy listening radio stations (and I think I remember Lawrence Welk doing a instrumental of it as well). Its a small world after all...
@multiz007: Another famous version here was by (I think Canadian) singer Lucille Starr - who also sang other french/english songs like 'Quand le soleil' and 'Jolie Jacqueline'.
@Naclement I believe this song made the American pop charts...we (well, some of us Americans) also know of Beyond the Sea, Love Is Blue, and Three Bells (Les Trois Cloches) though generally the English versions...I never get tired of listening to Edith Piaf singing La Foule, L'accordieniste, or her duet with her husband Theo Serapo A quoi ça sert l'amour?

My sister bought this album when we were kids. I enjoyed listening to it then and I am very happy to hear it once again. I love the harmony. This reminds me of a kinder and simpler time. So sad she came to such a tragic end on this earth. My hopes is that she ended up in Heaven where she can sing with the angels.
It's a shame how she was treated and ripped off by those she trusted and finally driven to suicide by her own government. Is the term "her companion of 10 years" another way of saying she was a lesbian??
I don't care about this woman's religious beliefs or her sexual persuasion. She had a truly magical voice. I was very saddened to hear what happened to her, committing suicide in poverty and despair after all her royalties were stripped from her. She gave the world much. If she had chosen a different path through life, her biography might read very differently too.
@EwolDJ She gave it to the Church but could not prove it so the Belgian govt. said she owed $60,000 and she was so despondent she killed herself at age 51..very sad..someone or the Church itself should have paid for her..after all, she gave it all away in the beginning...

Ha ha, funny you learnt i when you were a child, because the lyrics always make us (French guys) laugh: it's like em ... "Donald Duck-fuck-fuck", if you get the (poor) wordplay.
in the month of december of1963 and era when the beatles and many popular brithish groups were sky rocketing the pop charts an unkown belgian singer , soeur sourire the singing nun, took this song, dominique to a international hit throughout the world and charted #1 in the u.s.billboard charts and was the highest #1 single record ever sold for its time back in 1963.
She was penniless because she donated the proceeds of her hit to the catholic church. The Belgian government went after her for income taxes, and the church refused to pay any of it.
she committed suicide becuase she realized she was penniless and didnt know what to do with her career since it was going no where.what she needed to do was a find a good agent and move over to the United States that probably could have given her some money to her as she sang today in concert halls and symphony concerts throught the cities like Ms.Newton-john does till this day earning a good income from this concerts
Actually, the footage of Soeur Sourire performing "Dominique" on "The Ed Sullivan Show" should have survived, as most all of Sullivan's programs were restored and are the property of Andrew Solt's SOFA Productions. I'm surprised no one has uploaded that performance here on You Tube.
Nuns dress as they do to remove any individuality (sp). They give themselves completely to the service of Christ. Their dress is a "habit" becuase it is their daily dress-as is their prayer life.
It tells the story of Saint Dominque, a warrior of god, his armour his faith, his bible his sword. His overty happily born in service to his god--all needs provided as he went about his work. She also sings she hopes the happiness of the song and tune will cheer up all who hear, i times of joy and sadness ... a very basic translation for you plyg.
Never mind my question. I researched myself and may now share with others that "Soeur Sourire," directed by the Belgian film director Stijn Coninx (known for his 1992 Academy Award-nominated film "Daens") is currently in production, scheduled for release at the end of 2009.
It would be terrific if a monument to Soeur Sourire were built on the grounds of the convent where she served in Belgium (whatever is on said property today), together with an apology from the Church & Belgian government for their culpability in the tax controversy which contributed to her suicide.
Such a gesture would associate the legacy of Soeur Sourire more with the happiness of her music than the bleak means of her passing from this earth, although that too should never be forgotten.
Quelle hypocrisie ! Je suis content d'être até !!
She was not a "victim" of the Church. A bigot may believe that, but the truth is the Belgian government wanted taxes due. And with her loss of faith came, predictably, a loss of hope.
Not knocking the song, not knocking the singer, but the four weeks at the top of Billboard this one spent at the end of 1963, declared as nothing else could that rock & roll needed saviors and quick. After four more weeks of Bobby Vinton, the Beatles, with 14 consecutive weeks there via three different singles, gave announcement of that rescue. Signature, breakthrough hits by the Supremes, Four Tops & Temptations indisputably heralded Motown's enlistment in the same 'fight.' We were saved.
intense-looking lady, but a beautiful-looking lady as well. I hope this song is NEVER forgotten. I hope her difficult life will inspire us thoughout ours :)
She sang a song "Pillule d'or" (golden pill) refering to the contraceptive pills, and then Catholic Church began the attack, as ever. I am so sad that she was not able to move on!!!!!!!. But she might be kidding and singing in God's ear, who is a very understanding person.
She gave concerts and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. Her fame went to her head and she eventually left the convent to spend more time on her musical career.
At the same time she shacked up with her lesbian lover and released a song "Glory Be to God for the Golden Pill" singing the praises of the contraceptive pill. After her first album none of her music was very successful. In 1982, she and her girlfriend committed suicide together by taking sleeping tablets with alcohol.
It's become rather fashionable to put down MGM's/Debbie Reynolds' version of this nun's story, but Reynolds herself was a devout Roman Catholic, so making the film was, I'm sure, a kind of tribute to a person and a faith Reynolds respected and admired.
Of course Hollywood took liberties, and 'twas not a carbon copy of the sister's life story, but elements of the film are certainly true-- the nun's work at the orphanage, the foreign missions, the appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," etc.
I can say from hearing some of Soeur Sourire's actual songs (including "Dominique" on the radio when it was a hit) and the MGM film soundtrack that at least "Beyond The Stars," "It's A Miracle" and "Dominique" were represented pretty faithfully (no pun intended).
I saw the film when it originally played in theaters and thought Reynolds showed great reverence in her acting, that the film was quite good, in no way sacrilegious.
Some might think religious songs could never become hit records as when "Dominique" was on the pop charts, forgetting "Chant," a recording of monks chanting was a hit in the '90's. I also recall Pope John Paul II released a record of prayers that won a Grammy in the spoken word category.
Also, resurrecting the lighter religious fare of '60's pop culture ("The Flying Nun," "Trouble With The Angels"), there were the "Sister Act" films and "Nunsense" musicals in the 80's & '90's as well.
As someone raised in the Catholic faith, I see nothing wrong with these types of projects, and in reality nuns & priests are often blessed with terrific senses of humor and self-deprecation.
I shall never forget one of my old parish priests--a crusty, Irish, ex-Navy chaplain--saying grace at my First Communion breakfast, uttering these solemn words: "Bless the meat, damn the skin, open the kisser and shove it in." That man knew what his hungry congregation wanted (ham & eggs) and he delivered!
You're right nothing takes away from her talent because she was a lesbian BUT she might be still singing and happy if the church and society had tolerated her sexual preference
That's a nice thought, but I think it's simplified. After she left the convent, she also got some other views that - although they were pc at the time-- did not agree at all with the views of the Church. The convent would also have been upset at that too, because she was vocal about these views.
Reality is a lot more complicated than we like to believe, and there are a lot of contributing factors besides her sexual orientatin. Even so, I don't think she should have been left wth the taxes.
That doesn't take away from the impression she had on so many lives. And, she didn't BECOME a lesbian, she WAS a lesbian. SO WHAT? I only wish there were help for her so she and her partner didn't have to go to that extreme. She was a beautiful person; gave us the gift of her voice. Anything else is immaterial.
BRAVO - BRAVO - Well Said - Ididn't BECOME a Lesbian either - It Must Have Been An Extremely Difficult Personal Conflict For Her ... I feel sad that she and her partner couldn't find others to give them help with their finances and some other way out besides suicide - I'd like to think that TODAY, that horrible tragedy would NEVER have happened, and we'd still be blessed with her and her partners presence in the world.
Soeur Sourire "Sister Smile" was truly blessed with the beautiful gift of song. . . she did not one day 'choose' to be a lesbian and leave the convent, she struggled with a very organic essence of being that was misunderstood by society at that particular place and time. She, like all of us, was created in the likeness and image of God that was reflected in the sweet sound of her singing. Dominique is a great example for catechesis on the life of St. Dominic and his mission.
The first version I heard as a child was that of Lucille Starr. Later I found out that Soeur Sourire wrote the song. She's Belgian, btw. (just like Hercule Poirot), not french.
This is a very interesting documentary of that time. -- For some reason, earlier today I was remembering the Dominique song and downloaded it. It is one of the songs on an entire album by Jeanine Deckers - the Soeur Sourire.
I was created at an orphanage together of me it lived a lot of children in the years de1965 a1973 and I heard sister smile hundreds of times a year in I radiate him and in the radiola of the orphanage., I have beautiful memories of her., from Brazil

The church allowed her to release that song if she donated them the money it would make. Because it was a pauverty order church.
They took it all, but for belgium taxes she was the one who made all that money....
Her church never helped her paying those hudge taxes. Depressed and with hudge debts, her girlfriend and her finally commited suicided in 85...

She was penniless because she donated the proceeds of her hit to the catholic church. The Belgian government went after her for income taxes, and the church refused to pay any of it.
xr8ek 3 years ago 3
she committed suicide becuase she realized she was penniless and didnt know what to do with her career since it was going no where.what she needed to do was a find a good agent and move over to the United States that probably could have given her some money to her as she sang today in concert halls and symphony concerts throught the cities like Ms.Newton-john does till this day earning a good income from this concerts

Does anybody know why a nuns dress is called a 'Habit'?

@KitKatOrange Actually, the term "habit" isn't limited to nun's clothing.

It tells the story of Saint Dominque, a warrior of god, his armour his faith, his bible his sword. His overty happily born in service to his god--all needs provided as he went about his work. She also sings she hopes the happiness of the song and tune will cheer up all who hear, i times of joy and sadness ... a very basic translation for you plyg.

xRauwrr 3 years ago 2

J'accuse !

Quelle hypocrisie ! Je suis content d'être até !!
xbeauger 3 years ago 2
This woman's life ended as a terrible tragedy. She committed suicide, I think mostly due to allegations by the Belgian Government for tax evasion.
I think the Debbie Reynolds film is a far too sweet cotton-candy version of her life.
Though I think the Catholic Church may have had something to do with it as well.

In today's Belgium, Soeur sourire could marry her girlfriend and be happy...

That's Hollywood.
riccardobruero 4 years ago
It's become rather fashionable to put down MGM's/Debbie Reynolds' version of this nun's story, but Reynolds herself was a devout Roman Catholic, so making the film was, I'm sure, a kind of tribute to a person and a faith Reynolds respected and admired.
Of course Hollywood took liberties, and 'twas not a carbon copy of the sister's life story, but elements of the film are certainly true-- the nun's work at the orphanage, the foreign missions, the appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," etc.
gymnastix 3 years ago
I can say from hearing some of Soeur Sourire's actual songs (including "Dominique" on the radio when it was a hit) and the MGM film soundtrack that at least "Beyond The Stars," "It's A Miracle" and "Dominique" were represented pretty faithfully (no pun intended).
I saw the film when it originally played in theaters and thought Reynolds showed great reverence in her acting, that the film was quite good, in no way sacrilegious.
gymnastix 3 years ago
Some might think religious songs could never become hit records as when "Dominique" was on the pop charts, forgetting "Chant," a recording of monks chanting was a hit in the '90's. I also recall Pope John Paul II released a record of prayers that won a Grammy in the spoken word category.
Also, resurrecting the lighter religious fare of '60's pop culture ("The Flying Nun," "Trouble With The Angels"), there were the "Sister Act" films and "Nunsense" musicals in the 80's & '90's as well.
gymnastix 3 years ago
As someone raised in the Catholic faith, I see nothing wrong with these types of projects, and in reality nuns & priests are often blessed with terrific senses of humor and self-deprecation.
I shall never forget one of my old parish priests--a crusty, Irish, ex-Navy chaplain--saying grace at my First Communion breakfast, uttering these solemn words: "Bless the meat, damn the skin, open the kisser and shove it in." That man knew what his hungry congregation wanted (ham & eggs) and he delivered!
gymnastix 3 years ago
You're right nothing takes away from her talent because she was a lesbian BUT she might be still singing and happy if the church and society had tolerated her sexual preference
serapidus 4 years ago 2

Anything else is immaterial.
guy3276 4 years ago 12
BRAVO - BRAVO - Well Said - Ididn't BECOME a Lesbian either - It Must Have Been An Extremely Difficult Personal Conflict For Her ... I feel sad that she and her partner couldn't find others to give them help with their finances and some other way out besides suicide - I'd like to think that TODAY, that horrible tragedy would NEVER have happened, and we'd still be blessed with her and her partners presence in the world.
bonniebonjour 4 years ago 4
