this is such a tough question. I'm unable to answer it myself, being a Chinese-american with parents from beijing, one sympathetic to the guomingtang cause and one sympathetic to the gongchandang cause.
Taiwanese people are definitely ethnically and culturally similar to all Chinese, I find many not liking to admit this, because they are so politically different. I liken the taiwanese and chinese relationship to the US-UK relationship in the 19th century. (cont.).
They share a common language and many cultural similarities, but political differences and a grudge as one made the other lose land. But I love taiwanese people! they're friggin awesome, like all kinds of people can be, so , although im not extreme toward either cause, i think the best way is to have taiwan independent. However be close friends in terms of goods, industrial and cultural trading with China and all countries with a big 汉族 population.
I am not a Chinese man, however living in London as well, interested in China and soon starting to learn Mandarin. Agree that this program is a real masterpiece, very interesting and terribly professional. Just wondering will I ever be able to master mandarin in that level

You're right that there isn't an ideal democracy anywhere in the world, but that doesn't mean that there aren't degrees of popular control. So at least in a democracy there is the possibility of a peaceful transition to a system where oil companies don't dictate foreign policy. We're hoping here in the US that Obama provides just such a transition.
