I never knew the Sound of Music exisited until after my aunt told me about it and I saw the movie in the 3rd grade after the whole grade read the Night Crossing! I didn't understand it then but I watched it again around 2 years later and I began to understand it!

I prefer Mary Poppins...popping in and out of paintings, riding merry-go-round horses, tea parties on the ceiling, cleaning your room in a snap, and walking on chimney smoke! She's so much more fun than Maria!

Both roles were HUGE for Julie Andrews and launched her career in film. She was already an established Broadway singer (Camelot, My Fair Lady etc). She won the Oscar for Mary Poppins and wanted to be in the movie My Fair Lady but she was terrific as Maria von Trapp and I even think she was Oscar worthy in that one. She had so much talent!

I thought she wore a little too much makeup as a nanny for Mary Poppins, but her hair is way too short for Maria. soo.. I think I like Mary Poppins more I liked the songs better

it is funny! Mary Poppins and Sound of Music are about a rich family that run the house like a ship and they need a new nanny cuz all the others left and at first the children hate Mary Poppins and Maria and then once she brings in the music, they begin to like her. Mary Poppins is like a Disney version of Sound of Music without the history... what a coincidence! (sp?)

Mary Poppins was a character created by an Australian author, PL Travers (a pseudonym used by Helen Goff) in the 1930s, a long time before the von Trapps had to flee Austria.

Also, Mary Poppins was Julie Andrews first movie, The Sound of Music was made later.

They should have made the second and third books into a movie because I always cried when Mary Poppins left at the end of the movie. I love the movie but I hate the ending!! =(

I love Julie in both of these movies, but I'd have to say that she looks more beautiful as Mary. But the songs in The Sound of Music and her performance as Maria outshine Mary Poppins. Just my opinion =)
