  • Actually those 'cultural' things mentioned few exist nowadays in China. The 'fish thing' is just a joke or a story about ancient times during an after-dinner talk in my family. I don't know where you learn all these things from but don't be so serious about it. And in the workplace, women are equal to men as you westerners, maybe the only little difference is the common gender discrimination like few women presidents or few women parliament members in your western countries.

  • I don't think flipping a fish will ruin your friendship or business with most chinese. I love this video though; cause the video is promoting the respect for other culture, which i approve. nice day, buddies....

  • superstitious culture has to go; thank goodness for the flips

  • I've lived in China for 3 1/2 years, and I love it here! I like your video, but haven't seen some of the different culture differences you spoke of. For example, lack of respect for females in the workplace. I have met and worked for many chinese women here, and they commanded just as much respect as the men. I think that some culture points may depend on region, and even companies, rather than being general rules.

  • everyone living of another's hope and lack

and you wonder why this whole charade is dying.

    godpaper rejected

  • I haven't heard of any of this. White folks don't sweat it.

  • you talked about the lack of respect for chinese women in the workplace, but is it the same for white women working in china? i'm quite curious about this.. :)

  • In fact, you dont need to be so seriously about Chinese tradditional rulls. if someone juge a forigen people with a chinese tradditional rulls, it means he/she is a very stupid and very mean man. China is a very big country. people from different region have very different tradditions, so mostly chinese people have a very open mind. So just take it easy

  • damm for a fucking fish that kind of dumb

  • Ignorant fish-flipping american.

  • How about you American turncoats stop kissing Chinese ass? All you're over there for is to line your own pockets by perpetually importing cheap, plastic, poison crap into America. How pathetic.

  • Intolerant bastards, aren't they? For a country that makes so much money out of the west, you would think they'd be more considerate to other cultures. I've been in east-Asia for over 20 years and have never set foot in China and never will. Any place that mistakes itself for the centre of the universe doesn't deserve investors or customers. The long-nosed foreign devil says: no thanks.

  • wth is this

  • @kuku652 There's no discrimination here. In fact, the whole point of the video was to enlighten Americans regarding some of the cultural differences so that if they did travel to China one day, they would take the time to understand at least a small part of the wonderful cultural tapestry that makes up this great country.

  • @syrrah

    误会了 我没有指责您 。

    我是说那些误解这个视频的人。

    那些对东西方文化区别对待的人。

  • @kuku652 Understood.

  • @syrrah Whay did kuku say?

  • Do flash the toilet after use and do turn off the taps.

  • I find that Americans who have lived in China for a year or more have a very deep awareness and understanding of Chinese culture and the Chinese way of life. I wish some of these Americans would return to America and give some speeches concerning the main issues between the US and China, like human rights.

It is depressing and it hurts when I hear people express their perception of China being a slavish hellhole.

  • I am Cantonese and have lived in China for most of my life, and personally I am used to leaving poked chopsticks into food as I have done all my life, even when having dinner with my grandparents or relatives, who don't mind. To be honest, I never knew about the fish flipping beliefs until watching this video. I think it is important to be aware of such old cultural beliefs, but also accept the fact that culture has changed and people behave differently from how they used to.

  • @attcheung

    恩 因为南北文化稍微有些不同

    筷子不能插饭和茶壶嘴不能对人 这个是来自满族的习惯。

    北方很多地方还是比较忌讳的。

  • This is traditional old Chinese culture, which hardly exists much nowadays, completely different to modern Chinese culture, where far more people have educated minds that are open minded and logical. Modern Chinese people know that flipping a fish is not really more than what it literally is, it's just common sense - people aren't stupid + they know that in reality. Plus, Chinese people will probably understand and accept differences in etiquette anyway if they realise you are a foreigner.

  • @attcheung There's no need to be mad at foreigner who break traditional rules but there's no need to giving up our tradictions for foreigner just to call yourself modern. The best solution is to explain the stories behind and let follow them at their own will. This is how Japan maintain and promote their culture. we can learn from them =)

  • some cantonese or south culture.. not really happen in my hometown.

  • Don't take all this too seriously. It's highly specific to the contexts, regions and people this young man happened to meet. Most Chinese wouldn't know what he's talking about. Believe it or not, Chinese people are no less intelligent or open-minded than you and me. Small incidents that cause major problems are rare, so don't tie yourself in knots worrying about it. Be aware that there are differences, be sensitive to it, and use common sense. That's diffficult enough for we westerners.

  • "Young man." I love that. I'm 40. Thanks!

  • Thanks Syrrah. Appreciate the vid., it was well done and to the point. "You are the foreigner". I am going very soon and can use all the help I can get.

  • You put your chopsticks in the rice means gook luck. I always do, you should do it too.

  • Lol you mean, poking the chopsticks deep into the rice? Haha, it is considered as bad luck since it looks like the incense that Chinese people burn to their ancestors, or to the gods.

  • I simply can't help coming away after watching this video a couple of times with the sense that it is whiney. I wonder if the very last sentence or thought would have been sufficient at the beginning - why is it such a revelation that "I am a foreigner"? There are quite possibly thousands of cultural faux pas' available to me, and since this is a YouTube video, just leave it at that - "I'm a foreigner" - if you want to live in China, do it and take your lumps.

  • Wow. You completely missed the point. The video was far from "whiney". I've lived in China over 5 years and love it. I've immersed myself in the culture and live a multicultural lifestyle. The purpose of the video was to educate members of my class regarding awareness of cultural nuances (using specific examples to cultivate this awareness). It would appear that you completely missed it.

  • Flip the fish means bad luck!! it is the most stupid culture. There are a lot of stupid culture in America, but they are fading away. American just forget about these kind of culture( walking under a ladder, the 13th .... and so on). Why can't the Chinese do the same thing. I think Chinese people don't open their mind.

  • Wow. Talk about a closed mind!

  • It's not really a Chinese culture, rather, a cantonese culture

  • you are a vietnamese you should know better the vietnamese believe more in those "things" than every other culture.

  • @viethluu

No no no!!! U dun walk under a ladder unless u want to make aquiantances with Mr Bad Luck.

  • Very interesting.

  • thank you very much, you have been very helpfull.

  • I too have lived in china and half of these things would be found as offensive to most Chinese as putting your elbows on the table in the west. Chinese people are aware that westerners aren't particularly savy on Chinese etiquete and are very understanding in my experience.

  • Try putting your elbows one on each side to make it even.I am chinese its fine with me !

  • i luv china but i am scared i wanna move there but I am educated white/bolivian mix will i be discriminated??? will I be treated bad???

  • not at all

  • There are mixed race living in China as well. Not at all.If you do feel some kind of discrimination there,It is only due to misunderstanding.

  • if you treat us right then we will do the same

  • The richest person in China is actually a lady. Western socialty only pamper women at door opening without substance. Chinese women are as tough as guys

  • Is she a entreprenuel or family inheritence ? What is her name ?

  • Chinese woemn are as tough as guys ? For sure. They have been tough since the olden days starting from the very first chinese empress in the Tang Dynasty to Empress Dowager of the Qing Dynasty.

  • Fish flip is bizzare local culture which is not known by northen Chinese. Women are treated exactly same as males including fighting at as foot soldiers.

  • Very interesting! It's not unique to China... No matter where you go, you need to brush up on local culture so you don't display horrible "manners."
