@TheJboy88 You make a good point, the the inheirent problem is you have to read subtitles or don't know what's going on, as happened with the test audiences here.
@TheJboy88 I'm not too sure about that. Passion of the Christ was hugely successful, as with Apocalypto. Both of which were entirely in languages other than English.
You can't win a baseball game in the top of the 9th inning. Chamberlin got one hit. The other Skeksis got two. Chamberlin should have a chance at a second hit. To equal or tie the other Skeksis.
@bigfilmhat, my guess is that cleaving the stone in half gave the General an instant win. Makes sense in what appears to be a contest to see who can dent a rock the best.
The fact that you can watch this scene, have no idea what they're saying and still understand everything that is going on is really a testament to how great a filmmaker Jim Henson was.
I'm born in '82 and I believe this is the first movie I've ever seen... If you think this was scary you apparently don't know the german version of the skeksis xD.
The chamberlain's whimpering is much more annoying (!), the general much more agressive, etc. (Okay maybe I just think it, because I saw that version in my childhood...).
You can watch it here:
/watch?v=DcJ69OUtaKQ&feature=related at 2.21. (the whole movie is uploaded)
@theoutletsband the Chamberlain's whimper sounds really creepy here with the language - weirdly out of place. One minute he sounds like a crying child, and the next satanic.
Oh my god...my life is complete...a long time ago (around 10 years ago) i saw the scene where Chamberlain was undressed and it morbidly scared me and has haunted me for so long! I never knew the name of the film, know i have search and found this, and curiosity finally satisfied, i can honestly say i shall no longer be haunted by the shrilling whimpering of chamberlain...i can cry just about now.....
I wonder what language is this or is it a combination of different languages like some of the creatures in Star Wars? Just wanted to know. Does anyone have an idea?
I'm wondering what the rules of Hakskeekah are. Do the challengers just take turns whacking at the stone and the one that breaks off a piece of the stone first is the winner?
This is a great movie, don't get me wrong. But it WAS made for children. Not adults, but children. I'm not saying enjoying it as an adult is a bad thing, I'm just saying alot of the fans of this movie seem to be in denial about the fact that it's a children's movie. Which it is
@Virusoffline I think they would....Besides the skeksis and the skaven do have similar habits and behaviors. For example:Both races are paranoid towards their own kin,and both are backstabbing cowards.
I think they should have put out a version with all the original dialouge....this,........ when the mystics speak, augrah's original (kermit ) sounding voice.
Yeah, Jim Henson gave the Skeksis their own language but at a screening he got complaints that the subtitles were too distracting and took from the visuals.
well yeah... to me this is a kid's movie. And only some kids read and write. I was 3 the first time i saw this. I could read/write maybe a handful of words. Subtitles would have ruined that first experience.
When watching these original scenes, it suddenly makes sense why the Chamberlain, when speaking to Jen and Kira, suddenly speaks a poorly structured, heavily accented English, even in the theatrical cut.
Frank Oz, the voice of Grover, was the puppeteer for the Chamberlain, but the character was voiced by Barry Dennen who played Pontius Pilate on both stage/screen in "Jesus Christ Superstar".
I don't know which I like better...being able to know what they're saying is nice, but it's extra creepy when you don't. They should release a special edition with the original dialogue in it and with the funeral scene.
Oh this is cool. It really gives you a sense that the skeksis are a separate group from the rest of the world, and gives them a bit more individuality. Plus I just plain out like the voices.
I like the part where they rip off skekSil's clothes. I mean, I kinda feel bad for him, but I still like the idea of a naked skekSil. >8D
I pretty much had a fit at that part the first time I saw the film. "OMGOMGOMG! *Pant*"
The Skeksis always creep me out! Fizzgig was always my favourite character. Did you know that they're bringing out a new Dark Crystal movie in 2010? For Dark Crystal fans, there's a new Dark Crystal manga series created by TokyoPop, that's set years before the movie. There is also a manga called Return to Labyrinth manga also from the same company, and Toby's central in those novels.
@AnotherWorld82 wrong..there were subtitles..even explains this on IMBD and WIKI...Jim Henson should this film to a test audience in San FRAN.....and IT went real bad..He cut out 20 minutes...and replaced the subtitles with voices....
My fav Skeksi is the one in the gold and stuff at 3:51
I also like the New Emperor and the dude with the long beak and glasses.
That was such a cool movie!! It scared the shit out of me when I was like 5, and I can never stop watching the movie!!! It got me into all sorts of things.
Sounds like a mix of spanish and german to me, but now that I've watched the original it seems to me they should've kept it that way, it would've given it a much darker feel to the movie then what they put into the movie afterwards.
SkekUng only says one word when pronounced emperor in the original, but in the re-dub the line "Now, bow down to me, I am emperor? is added when his mouth's not moving.
And again, maybe re-dubbing the film was a better choice than the subtitles, but, damn, they should have lest their normal voices D: I mean, the guys that gave them the voices in their original skeksis language should have did the same in english... I love SkekZok's voice in the original version so much <3
lol and SkekZok's face on 4:35 is like "omg I left you only for 5 minutes O.O''' "
The original dialogue really adds a much more creepy element to the film. It's good they took it out or else everyone would have been stuck reading sub-titles instead of paying attention to the amazing puppetry.
Actually have to agree, but it still would be great to watch the original ^^ or at least them having their english dialogues dubbed by the same people that dubbed them in their original language.

I think it would have been a good idea for them to have this language of their in the actual film.
It would help to cement this world as alien in the minds of the audience.
After all, why should almost every fictional world speak english?

And why shouldn´t the Gelfings and the other people speak their own language, too.
