Great cruise ship that I miss hearing from. I grew up along the Mississippi River. Our family would hurry down to the locks as soon as we heard her. A grand scene anytime, but spectacular at night!
I us to work on the bottom of the Old Man River raising barges and tugs in the 60s and 70s I could hear the Delta Queen coming down the river while I was on the bottom playing the calliope and the crew on top couldn't see the boat, sound travels father in water
My mother's granpap had one of these built out of car horns and used hubcaps and car parts for percussion. He used to play it at a private whorehouse in Salt Lake City. They never busted the place cuz it wuz owned by the church.
Some Seattle based outfit will be offering river cruises in a year or two but no word on the type of vessels they'll be on.Most likely not a paddlewheeler.
I grew up on this boat. Watched the MQ being built...ended up working on that for a season. It's sad to see her go. Like the 'Old Man on the Mt', a piece of American Heritage fading away. The real irony is that something of that quality could never be made today.
getting rid of the Delta Queen? ANOTHER thing the liberals are denying us in the interest of "safety" or some other type of NONSENSE that protects one clumsy idiot vs. the entire society.
Man Made Global Warming, you know. They have to have a cap in trade on hot air so that Congress can continue to produce hot air unabated. So, just sit back and watch everything that represents America get S-canned in the name of 'rebuilding' America.
I have a knack for doing that. ;) I run a message board that deals with various vintage mechanical music and I get attacked on a regular basis by the Political Correctness Gestapo for not being PC.
It's not the same when the Delta Queen is not the Belle of Louisville's opponent in the Great Steamboat Race. I guess they'll try to get rid of the Belle next.
What SOLAS standards didn't it meet? I'm pretty sure they were seeking an exception from the government regulations outlined by SOLAS but did not get it and that's why it was shut down.
There is no pattern. The Delta Queen has a steel hull, double one, actually. Most of her superstructure is wood, but she is equupped with a modern fire suppression system, has military grade heat rise detectors. You are safer on board than you are in your own home, especially asleep. Does your home have a 24 hour watchman consantly checking every deck? No?? The DQ does (or did--AUGH!)! Write your congressman and senators NOW, we need the DQ back on the river--save 200 American jobs at no cost!
Hopefully this sound won't simply fade into history like so many others like it, but remain for future generations to enjoy. I grew up around the Delta Queen for most of my 58 years and would really hate to see her go.
I am doing everything in my power to save her...for I would LOVE to go back to work on her soon....as a matter of fact, the sooner the better for all involved! Thanks for your help. too! Everyone who sees this video, please take a moment and write to your elected Representatives and SAVE THE DELTA QUEEN! We CAN do this!
I love the Delta Queen and it's calliope! Every time it goes down OHIO river by new martinsville wv, i always watch it and listen to the calliope! My great grandma you to go on it every year!
We are working really hard to make sure that doesn't happen. It is too bad the factions who want her gone are not paying attention to all the owners have done to make the passengers safe, for she is truly safer than any public building in America and this whole thing is just a horrid misunderstanding and political power stand off!
You definately have that right, because I did some research and Majestic America covered the wood with steel to make the DQ even safer than she already was.
Nice video! I've been fascinated by the steam whistles and sweet voice of the calliope since I'm 3 years old! (I'm 32 now.) I love mechanical organs and pipe organs as well. I used build organs and used to be an organist.
we used to have a steam boat, but it was a resurant just docked, but we had to sell it because it was to expensive to eat at! the committie deservs to be shot for buying somthing just to turn into a desaaster! my dad works at kumatsu in peoria and they had to come down to help build it and he welded the huge grill together and the smoke stacks.
Epic ending!! Thanks for sharing.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
I think it's more over concern for the 300 other overnight guests who would lose their life in a fire, since the ship is made out of wood.
Google for The Steamer "Island Queen" and you'll start to see a pattern.

If she can no longer take overnight passengers, what will become of the Queen? She is a historical landmark, they can't scrap her - can they?

How fun. And surprisingly well in tune for a calliope.
Why is the sound so far off the video?
Especially matters here when you can see the pipes steam.
