  • A Mademoiselle Villette

  • I've always been a big bowie fan but he's pretty absurd in this role I think - he looks like a fetus in a suit

  • Bowie is a fidgety amateur here. No technique at all. Need to be a pro to hold your own with Marlene.

  • This is not at all a mean-spirited joke. LOVE Marlene! I once met an extraordinarily beautifully-handsome tall blond young orthopaedic medical doctor named Dietrich at University of Southern California too. Marlene looks like a Jewish matron in Beverly Hills, California here?

  • @MonsieurDecent Dietrich is a very common name in Germany, it's like Kelly or Smith in the USA. Not sure if the orthopäde necessarily was related to her.

I once stood before her house in Avenue Montainge Nr. 12 in Paris while she was still alive, and i was considering just rninging the bell and claiming i was a distant relative named von Losch (which was her born family name). But then i dismissed the idea....lol

  • @Elberiver11 Thank you for your comment! The doctor is expressly not related to Marlene... Marlene once said: she herself acted vulgar, whereas Modonna is vulgar.

  • @MonsieurDecent I like Madonna, too, but i really think she is sometimes too vulgar. It is not that vulgarity shocks me, its just unpleasant and a "modern" trend that i dont like. I think Madonna does that to attract attention, actually she would not even need that, she has personality enough.

I think the stars of the old days were real personalities, what i see today on TV mostly turns me off. I was at Marlene's funeral, it was amazing, i never saw people applauding when a coffin arrived.

  • @MonsieurDecent Sorry in case i sounded to "lecturing" when referring to the family name Dietrich, that was not my intention. But over here its not rare to meet someone with that family name, actually one of my great-grandmothers was a born "Dietrich". Any German name with the syllable "diet" in it simply means "german". (literally it originally meant "people").

  • Marlene is an older version of Madonna!!! WOW They look so much alike!

  • @maleficentdiva No, Madonna is trying to a newer version of Marlene.....but although i like Madonna, she is a complete failure compared to Marlene. Marlene is legend.

See the famous interview in Danmark 1971 with her - she was 70 years old and she looks STUNNING!!!

    youtube.com/watch?v=sKy5d3L3GDI

  • @Elberiver11 I actually watched the Denmark Interview and i was surprised at how Stunning she looked!! I also think that her accent and the way she spoke (her body posture, her eyes, her hand gestures) which she had cultivated for years and which were aimed at seducing those around her were just Brilliant!!!

  • Julia Roberts, Demi Moore, The Meryl . . . people settle for so little, now.

  • Ist keine Emigrantin, hat am 2.4.1930 Berlin verlassen, da die UFA ihren Vertrag nicht verlängern wollte.

  • She is still amazine...even at 90.....loved Marlene....

  • Bravo!

  • Fabulous!

  • A true German who loved her country

  • Elizabeth taylor, Marlen Dietrich, ...Divas, there are no Divas today

  • @boazsenator Meryl Streep, Glen Close!

  • @mariaperiwinkle They are extraordinary actresses, the best of his generation, but not Divas. To be honest, currently there are almost no actress in Hollywood who can bear the title of diva. To be a diva is not enough to be great actresses or be awarded. There's a whole context of great beauty appealing and an aura of mystery, transgression, madness, etc.. So, that's because Elizabeth Taylor, Marlene Dietrich, Marilyn Monroe are true divas.

  • @VictorEmanuell I don't know about "madness", but to me Charlize Theron has a great combination of beauty, stage presence, and talent.

  • @Rosannasfriend Yes, i agree with you, she is VERY beautiful, oscar winner and have a shining stage presence. But, does she a diva?? Well, i don't know.

  • @VictorEmanuell :) Time will tell. The people who lived during Marlene's time loved her, but did they know she would be considered a diva? Maybe not.

  • It is such a shame this is her last film, it's an absolute stinker. That said, Dietrich rises above it.

  • Very appropriate. It's 2011. Fast forward from this film and anyone who is an observer knows that young artists respect older artists for their wisdom. The survivors are distance runners. Cheers to Marlene. And cheers to David Bowie for learning and becoming a master at his craft. It's about the lighting and entertaining fans. By the way... Stevie Nicks is still with us. She's in her 60's and people still beg, borrow and steal from her. And she's made a fortune.

  • Jesus, just look at her. She's 77 but looks 60, at the very most. Not sure why she has the veil, she has nothing to hide.

BTW is that Sam Neill who opens the box for Bowie containing the money?

  • huh?? bowie!!!?? I had no idea this film even existed

  • @sallyfieldrequired This would have been two years after The Man Who Fell To Earth.

BTW if there exist photos of Dietrich taken after this film, I've never seen them (although I don't doubt their existence).

  • @ragemanchoo82 there must be, she died much later.

  • @ragemanchoo82 After the day's filming (in this film), Dietrich went home and never left her apartment again for the remainder of her life. She had only one photo taken later, in 1986, a Polaroid, for a selected 6 people. She still looked beautiful, a little thinner than in this clip. The 1986 photo has circulated a bit and her grandson freaks out and makes threats when it is online anywhere. Another exists of her sleeping, that a trusted employee at her apartment building snapped and sold.

  • @nonbreeder Wow, I'd be curious to see the sleeping photo, since it sounds like the 1986 photo isn't online. Any idea where it is?

  • @ragemanchoo82 I have that magazine. It is 'Bunte' from 1992. She is on the cover. I think it is a French magazine. Photos of her apartment are in it as well. Everything is in color.

  • still gorgeous, never ever dull. what a life, what a gal

  • I have never seen this, only the segment where she sang""Du Schoner Gigolo".

By this time, Marlene was a recluse, and her scene(s) were actually filmed in her Paris apartment.

She had a great fear of plastic surgery, and never went under the surgeon's scalpel. For this film, she pulled her face tight with what some said were knitting needles, donned a wig, made herself up expertly, and wore a hat with sheer netting. Of course, the camera had a bit of a filter on it, too.

  • look at her face, I had no idea plastic surgery was that good in those days! (Thats meant as a compliment, she was over 70 here, she clearly had something done)

  • But seriously, why is David Bowie in this movie

  • @fyffenotsmart KIM NOVAK AND MARIA Schell were in this movie too

  • BOWIE!!! and of course the eternal MARLENE!!!

  • who did her surgery?

  • Девид Боуи... Красавец!

  • MARLENE, Y U NO HERE TODAY >:O???

  • your welcome

  • stunning she is the classiest woman i have ever seen i dont care what ppl ay bout her in the end ( her daughter) she is what ever single person in this world should inspire 2 be and great human with a huge heart..worked hard and played hard what a woman.what a legend and compared 2day so called stars those pple have nothing on this woman! besides stars falls and legends live forever! and dietrich is a legend

  • @giavannira I agree with you

  • @siempremarisol

    thank you:)

  • @giavannira I think Greta Garbo was the only other star bigger than Marlene

  • @siempremarisol I'll take Marlene over Greta....and I really like Greta.

  • @myrtlebox Well dietrich was more human and think it was jean cocteuc the one who said marlene is a goddes garbo is counting her linen

  • I COULD CRY SEEING THIS..... THE LAST TIME WE SAW THE GREAT LEGEND THAT I PERSONALLY THINK CAN SEND GARBO BACK HOME ON A BIKE.

  • In addition to her many other accomplishments, Marlene invented the "Star" system for the movie industry...

  • A hátraforduló pacák az elején pedig a fiatal Ernyey Béla!...

  • I had just turned 20, in the Air Force and stationed in Kaiserslautern, (West) Germany when "Just A Gigolo" was released. There was an excitement about this film, even one of the military magazines made it their cover story, the review stating the script was strong enough to attract: 1) David Bowie, who shed his long hair; 2) Kim Novak, who lost weight; and, the most important event of all 3) The Great Marlene Dietrich, who came out of retirement for "Just A Gigolo." I sent my mom that magazine.

  • @KojiRecords There was sort of a Hollywood backlash because the film premiere was in Germany; this was regarded as a slap in the face in the U.S. and with no domestic distribution dollars to promote it, "Just A Gigolo" did not get the reception it truly deserved; we did not even get a screening of it at the base theatre; regardless of the superstar cast involved, the mystique of having The Great Marlene Dietrich, the legend herself, cannot be denied.

  • @KojiRecords I was there too in the highrises

  • Marlene Dietrich returned to films in 'Just A Gigolo' with an all star cast of Kim Novak,

David Bowie, Maria Schell and Curt Jurgens. With such a cast it suprised me but I do not think this film got much of a US distribution.

  • Marlene, wow what a lady. Legend, beauty.

  • I know this was hell for Maria to manage and she felt very bad about this "end" to a career, but now that I see this, I think she looks good and sounds good, too. Does sound sloshed, but that may be just based on what I heard. The money was needed and I don't care if it's all "assembled," I think it's need. Bowie ain't bad, neither! Thank you for posting! Greetings from France.

  • Beautiful Lady ...Handsome Man. MDDB

  • Too bad they never met ...

  • @deusirae76 GOOD.... BOWIE WAS A TOTAL ASSHOLE ON SET AND DID ANYTHING POSSIVBLE TO GET MARLENE.... THEY ENDED UP RECORDING IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES.

  • I seem to recall that they never actually met. Their parts were filmed separately, as Marlene would not leave Paris. That's why they are never in the same frame.

  • Nooo, she still lives on, she is an amazing person.

  • Pleasing to see that she was still ravishing in her last performance. She so rarely got film scripts worthy of her talents and beauty during a long career. I saw her onthe stage in the 60's in a misguided one woman act. Maybe there was just enough to remind us how extraordinary she was, but the voice was weak and plaintive.

  • madonna, lady gaga y otras de ahora no son más que un remedo y mala copia de la gran Marlene Dietrich!

  • D.I.V.A.

  • This is very poignant.

  • You can see where Madonna knocked-off some of her styles.

  • OMG she's still gorgeous! I wish I were her...*sigh*

  • marlene, the beautiful, naughty angel of my life - RIP

  • Quotation of Marlene herself about her appearance in "Just a gigolo": "How ugly can you get?" :-(

In fact she was totally drunk filming this - as reported by her daughter.

  • When I was young they said that Marlene had so many facelifts that she now had a beard like a goat:)

  • The Real SnowQueen

  • wow she still awesome even at old age...kind of remind me julie andrews 4 todays age haha xD

  • Bowie, named* like a weapon and marlene, greatest german moviestar ever. like this scene.

*Bowie-Knife created by Colonel James Bowie.

  • Marlene is a one of a kind actress. None of today's actresses can match her talent and style. Her stage presence is magnificent.

  • @magyarwho No actress shall EVER match her talent.

  • WHAT A WOMAN

  • SHE WAS AN OLD WOMAN AND THAT'S OVIOUS! THE MAKEUP-ARTIST DID BAD WORK! SHE LOOKS LIKE A MUMMY!

  • @sadodoc Well everyone is old someday. Guess you, whoever you are, would like some respect too, when you are at that stage in your life. Well there`s some news: even men get old and often look worse.

  • @009firefox ...BECAUSE OLD MEN (EXEPT LIBERACE) USUALLY DON'T USE MAKEUP:-)

  • i thought he looked familiar - David Bowie ! :O

  • she's so beautiful <3

  • Wow. Thanks for posting. I never knew she spoke in this movie. I thought she just sang "Just a Gigilo" and that was it. She's very convincing in the scene. I'm glad she came out of retirement to do this.

  • champagne ? Dom Perignon my favorite ...hehe my too !!!

  • Wow...

  • She is more magnificent at older age...unparalleled fantastic WOMAN ! Many artists & contemporary entertainers are using & copying her style, manners & even kind of unique humor...but her braveness against 3rd Reich was unparalleled to anyone...it's just part of her talent & grace...

  • Marlene was such a strong and principled woman. When asked why she supported the Allies against Nazi Germany, her own country, she just said "aus Anstand", roughly translated "out of decency".

  • She looks so gorgeous after all these years! Excellent actress!

  • marlene hab ich nicht wiedererkannt, nur wieland..........

  • i love this woman and im so proud to be german

  • I think David Bowie is a real good actor.MMmmm and especially with Marlene.

  • @paulhenrydallaire You know of course this scene was shot without Bowie or Dietrich even being in the same city?

  • Marlene (L)

    we love you

  • the best way to forget untill you want to remember someting you remember ! = germany is the greatest ! and its people are the best of humans !

  • Wie alt ist Sie hier, in dem Film?

  • @Schmusebaer1971 marlene war 77 Jahre jung !

  • Beau comme Bowie...

  • Poignant.

  • whoa she had a lot of plastic surgery!

  • @angiejacobsrs NO.... SHE USED THE OLD HOLLYWOOD METHOD.... TAPE AND STRINGS TIED AND THE BACK OF THE HEAD, MAKEUP AND GREAT LIGHTING..... REGARLESS SHE WAS A TRUE BEAUTY.

  • I saw Marlene in Paris once many years ago, around the time she made this film.

She still looked good although limped quite badly, But for a woman in her 70s was still hot!!!

  • una reina,fantastica, maravillosa.......

  • Davis YOU HIDE haha I find you :P Champagne Thank You ............tu Gigolo .....Pro MmMmMmmmM Baxterlicious xxxxxx

  • Davis YOU HIDE haha I find you :P

  • Beautiful, elegant and sensational to the very last...

  • dom pewinon my favowit

  • oH MY gOD, these women are the COURGARS OF THE 70'S!!!!

  • Thank you, Alex!!! So touching...

  • When Marlene died her last sad years were over, stolen from, photographers attempting to take pictures of her in bed, a disgraceful way to treat anyone let alone this remarkable woman who reportedly could read the broadsheet newspapers in four languages. The ridiculous and inaccurate informatiom about her including that her theatre lighting was dim in later years. Marlene understood lighting as she did every aspect of her art. Joe Davis lit her for many Years. I met her in 1973 she was gracious

  • @IFINEVERSING in this movie was Kim novak , MARIA SCHELL AND SIDNEY ROME

  • @IFINEVERSING It is such a shame. She was idolzied by the Isreali community too for standing up to Nazism. A big honor for a person who was born in Germany.

    (as Marlene D,)

  • Wunderbare Marlene Dietrich. David Bowie und sie haben sich nie getroffen. Leider.

    Es lebe Marlene Dietrich!

  • bowie and dietrich havent meet in real life it was in different studios, he was in berlin, she in paris

  • Bowie and Dietrich??? never saw that before.....

  • Perfectly lit 'til the end : )

Such a pity she went into exile after this.

R.I.P Marlene - you are beyond compare.

  • This is an education in beauty class and elegance - regardless of all the comments on how and why this was done - Diva Marlene looks brillant - we all should look this good at this age - YOU MAY LEAVE NOW - how very sincere and grand - RIP my dear

  • I mention Dietrich in The Celebrity Song.

  • And David Bowie!

  • excellent, thanks

  • To me if she'd been blonde as ever before (or nearly ever) she would have looked even younger than she does ( which is more like 60 that closer to 80 )...and she looks very soft...most people become harder looking with age...she softened.

  • I agree it's wonderful to watch. In fact they recorded their parts in different studios and it was then very cleverly edited together . . . and it was followed by Dietrich's very touching singing of "Just a Gigolo". Part of the song was lost when the master of the film was damaged badly by fire . . . though a few of us still have the original of it on the video that was released shortly after the film and therre are also copis of the LP that came out as an excellent soundtrack..

  • nice...elegance

  • Sehr schön.....

  • Wonderful! Thank You for generously posting this.

  • Great, historic stuff! Thank You for generously posting this.

  • marlene deitrich and david bowie???? sweeet!!!

  • @julie0348 Bowie and marlene never met on the set. She was filmed by a second unit which was sent to Paris. If you rewatch it, you'll se that they cut away from her to him and back.

  • @julie0348 indeed-the gay boi's love her

  • Excellent! Thanks for sharing this!

  • wasent she a dirty old woman

  • especially beautiful lady!

  • Yes...very beautiful, considering all the tape pulling her face up under that wig and hat! Seriously...she definitely knew how to create the illusion that she was still a lot younger than she actually was.

  • Lovely mixture ¡¡¡¡ two generations full of glamour ¡¡

  • that is david bowie

  • the wonders of lighting, a good veil and minimum movement, she knew how to look fabulous till the end.

  • I love Marlene. She was so beautiful, classy, and talented.

  • Wonderful, wha a classy lady, even in her later days -

she had it all, class, style and bravery !

Thank you marlene for all you gave to us -

    with my everlasting love -

danke marlene, du wirst nie vergessen und immer in meinem herzen sein !

Marlene forever - angels never die !

  • There never be another actress like Ms. Dietrich !

It is a GREAT GRANDE DAME .

    Cheers!

  • why the hell is she grilling the poor guy like that for?

  • @andeaver1937

she was a pimp sizing him up. Why do you think she told him to leave her presence to go back and dance with the woman?

  • lol, ya right...that's fucking David Bowie!

  • hey whts going on during this part

  • Even Madonna tried to look like Marlene Dietrich in her later years, but to no accomplishment. You know, there could only be one, as the Highlander saying goes.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. It was great to see. I'd never seen this before. I'm just amazed at how attractive and sexy she looks in it. She was about 78 years old in it. It's stupefying.

  • she was a fasinating creation, although she was frail, weak and feable by this time, they clevery shot it very flattering, kept her movement to a near minimum and gave her as great lighting and a subtle veil.

unlike many of her equals, she resisted the Baby Jane movie type ( which im sure she would have loved chewing the scenery while welding a wax like Ms. Crawford) instead made a comeback/final movie with dignity ( though a madame of male prosistutes still remained someone sensational!)

  • @wilsondylanmccartney: she was 75, almost 76. (born in 1902 and the movie was make in 1978)

  • @jgerard56 Marlene was born in 1901. I well remember the `Sunday Times` article in 1978 with her portrait on the cover. Seeing the film in London a whispered hush went around the cinema when she appeared. I have read that the crew gave her an ovation when she left the set.

  • @wilsondylanmccartney i m sorry, what s the name of this movie?? 78 years old?!?! this is unbelievable!!!

  • @zaruxi Called Just a Gigolo. She was actually 77 in it.

  • Die Dietrich zu sehen und zu hören ist immer wieder ein Ereigniss.

  • Try "marlene dietrich - little drummerboy" on youtube.

It is the german version Kleiner Trommelman - a BEAUTIFUL version.

  • is that Ziggie Stardust???

  • yes, very very young

  • @MANWORLD good try,,,manworld. you must be single.....yes ,,, I got 5 years my brain hurts alot

  • Is this Evelynn Kunneke at 0.21?

  • @ericlebeau
