Papelbon is a great closer. Rivera is the best closer in history. When papelbon has 500 saves and is the best closer in the game for 14 years+ then you can argue that he is just as good as Rivera. And Rivera was 38 yo last year and posted an ERA of 1.40 w/ 1 blown save. Papelbon was 27 and had an ERA of 2.34 with 5 blown saves. Enough said.

Actually I do have a clue what I'm talking about, I follow baseball almost year round, and K-Rod is the best closer in baseball, it's the reason why the Mets will be a big contender in the NL this year. Rivera's what, 47? And he always sucks against the Red Sox. During the clutch games he can't hold, while Papelbon shuts down the lineup 1,2,3 with no problems.

His comment was admittingly taken out of context as Papelbon has expressed nothing but the deepest respect for Mariano Rivera and claimed he was the Godfather of closers, and the Rivera should infact be the closer. Which he was.

Last time I went to a Yanks game at Fenway, we came back to my buddy's car in the lot to find a cracked windshield and a torn up Yankee cap (which someone paid for just to tear up btw) stuffed under the wipers. All b/c he had NY plates. For all they knew that could have been a sox fan who moved to NY. What a d*** move!! But this was back in 2000 when Boston was still a joke of a franchise. Maybe with a few titles, the fans will lighten up a little.

It is just too bad that Papelbon has not learned how to handle the media yet. He should have known that what he said would start a problem in some form and not said it at all. He is a young, excellent pitcher and athlete, but needs to be pulled aside by someone and taught a lesson in respect for the game and the history of the game. Surely some of his teammates realize this, right? Two wrongs don't make a right, but he deserved exactly what he got, seems like that is what he wanted anyway.
