I have read about this argument many times. I would just like to ask this: Is there anywhere in the New Testament where it is specifically stated that instrumental music of any kind whatsoever was used in worship by Christians? If they didn't use it maybe we ought not use it either.
Well that's just annoying! God's love is so awesome why should'nt we have a party everytime we worship him? Why should'nt we use our God given gifts i.e. guitar or singing to praise him?? @LauderdaleBaptist Haha well did you know David danced NAKED in the streets? did you know the bible tells us MANY times to life holy hands in worship? Did you know that VERY MANY of hymns are made from bar tunes, only with different lyrics? What is wrong with lights? last time i checked different colored lights aren't bad. whats so bad about drums? last time i checked drums dont cause me to sin, or do anything unGodly? i never have seen any thing in the bible against drums
O god, if nightclubs had music like contempo christian music, nobody would go to them lol! BTW I hate nightclubs just as much as church. I don't drink or go to nightclubs - not because it is a sin, it's just stupid - as stupid as christianity. Signed, ex-christian.
I never asked a question. I made a statement. But let me share this scripture... 1 Praise the LORD.[a] Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens.
2 Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.
3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre,
4 praise him with timbrel and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe,
Yeah, the God who created a universe so huge that we can't even comprehend a fraction of it has to be able to fit into your teeny box of understanding...that's very sad. Because of course the bible says that you have to wear a coat and tie and listen to organ music, since they had organs back when it was written.
That scripture has nothing to do with Praise and Worship. Psalm 111:1 "Praise ye the Lord. I will praise the Lord with my whole heart, ion the assembly of the upright, and in the congregation." 135:1 "Praise the Lord.Praise ye the name of the Lord; Praise HIM,O ye his servants of the Lord. @ Ye that stand in the house of the Lord,in the courts of the house of God, 3 Praise the Lord; for the Lord IS good: sing praises unto his name; for it is pleasant." Psalm 146:1 and147:1&7 and 148
This pastor is wasting his time. I'm surprised people are paying his salary. He could be preaching Jesus.. Instead, he would prefer to bash modern worship music. What a shame. Waste of time. Waste of money. Waste of a pulpit.
@jped96 "Why does it matter what music you make?' Rock n roll belongs to Satan, so it matters a whole lot. When Satan was thrown down from heaven one of the reasons mentioned was his music, so if it matters to God it ought to concern us. Also since when was music allowed to divide the church?
@chiefredbottom "And where are you geting this info?" Please explain your question a bit further, if you are asking about the bible verses a good place to start is the 14th chapter from Isaiah take note particularly verse 11......along with the NOISE of your harps' there are others, Not even kind David escapes God's critique regarding his music
@outbackcafe I never asked a question. I made a statement. But let me share this scripture... 1 Praise the LORD.[a] Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens.

The pastors no longer care about their flock but only themselves. Rock n roll music has no place in the church. Pastors are to lazy to find out what the bible has to say on the subject of music. Since church music is supposedly used to glorify God then why not 'find out what pleases the Lord' Ephesians 5:10.
Amen Brother Cloud. I walked out of my church for playing christian rock in videos. Fortunately, the church split because of the pastor's immorality - so problem solved. Now my put up with rock music in the church has returned to 30 seconds, just long enough for me to make it to the bathroom to puke.
For alot of people who might object to David Cloud's Bibical teaching on the issues concerning the music in the church is that I know from where alot of contemporaries coming from who might excuse their detriment of the use of psalms, hymns and spiritual songs which is brought in Colosians 3:16 and Ephesians 5:19 which is also hinted at in 1 Corinthians 14:15
and James 5:13 and for this reason I also want to point and bring out the scripture where it says "that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established." Now you problebly know and I know that in context of what that verse was talking about the confrontation about a fault between a brother and a another man that has commited a sin,
but if that person does not admit to that sin, then bring two or three people with you to confront that person, and if that person don'tacknowledge his fault, then tell it to the church ect, ect... But another way to look ecspecially at this particular passage is when God says or brings out something two or more times in scripture(in the mouth of two or three witnesses), thus to come to the conclusian that God must be trully making a point in saying a
statement several times to make a point in the book of Colosians 3 and Ephesians 5 which both are parrallel passages thus giving the indication that the use of psalms, hymns and spiritual songs must be very important, not in a sence that music is to become the emphisise(which can and has created only more problems), but in sence that it adresses what form of music we should be using and the purpose and context of how and why we use it, thus coming to the conclusion
that there must be a great signifecance behind those passages, ecspecially when it speaks about the the use of psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. And putting this as a side note, using the criteria that I just went through concerning Colosians 3:16 and Ephesians 5:19 which brings about the music that is to be used in the fellowship and the personal and public level of the true Believers which should truly reflect God's glory, beauty, holiness and order,
and also should direct men to His holines and His ways(not the worlds). And yet the songs had to be spiritual, "spiritual": which means something that is diametrically oppossed to the flesh or anything that would draw attention from a fleshly parade that would appeal to, or please and satisfy the lust of the flesh and the desires of the mind or anything thats just the opposite of something that is fleshly.
For example in Galations 5:16 it says: "This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would." And also in Romans 13:13-14 which also says: "Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof." And yet since in both Ephesions 5:19 and Colosians 3:16 that out the music is to be of the spirit(or "spiritual"), and not a work or a parade of the flesh, therefore it is clear that Paul in context is teaching us that that music is not made to satisfy our personal desire and preferances and it is also not to be perfomance, entertainment and fleshly, chaoticly,
orgasticly and eroticly oriented. But instead to be spiritual, and through this fostering true unity within a doctrinal stand and also edification in the church and because of this I also want to point another verse in 1 Corinthians 14:15, and the whole chapter of 1 Corinthians 14 which was talking about where it says that all things are to be do unto edification of the congregation of believers where it comes to the conclusion in 1 Corinthians 14:26 where it says: "How
is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying." And also where it comes to the conclusion in verse 13 where it says "What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also." Thus indicating that when we sing(not chant, rap, growl or
scream, but SING), that we must do it with an UNDERSTANDING in order to edify and admonish another in the congregation and in order to be edified and admonished from it, any logical conclusion that first we should first be able to UNDERSTAND what we are singing about, or else, the form of music that brought out in Eph.5:19 and Col.3:16 will lose one of their main purposes which is to edify. But yet going through all bibical criteria to make a point, How can
anybody possably claim that any worldly, sensual, demonistic and occultly rooted music-style is suitable and acceptable for the believer and for God's worship service and the method's of evangelism and yet that only man's "personal taste and preferance" is somehow the only guideline we need? I hope alot of you contemporaries see and realise that this is a worldly philosophy that does not belong in christian circles nor the church.
@Simplistic7SalvatioN John 4:22-24But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that
worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
@LauderdaleBaptist Thank you for posting these excellent messages. This is indeed a most serious issue. I thank the Lord for men like David Cloud & the warning ministry he engages in. Ignore the warning at our peril — God will avenge His honour.

May this ministry be blessed to the building up & equipping of the saints in the light.

Ok, I think I have heard enough. I happen to know Johnny Hunt. Rev. Hunt is about as straight as a laser beam and a great man of God. I was at this church many years ago when it really started to grow. If you are implying that he has changed because he has electric guitars or praise music in his services, you are doing a grave dis-service to a wonderful man of God. While some of the "music" is wrong, I can assure you that you are not speaking truth about Johnny Hunt!
@Prof2You They start out fundemental and small....Then evil and lustful vainity rips out of the depths of Hell! God doesn't change He is Holy! You can't serve God and the World at the same time. Real Christiand stay the course...God wants us to worship Him, not our vanity and lusts. Holy music is to be Holy. When a church compromises with the World, it is of the World., What do we choose? The World or God?
This guy is out to lunch. Spend less time calling out true worshipers and more time teaching the word of God and worship Him. Take a trip to Africa and tell the converts there they are worshiping wrong, ban their drums and style of music because it doesn't agree with your idea of "real" worship.
Next thing you know we'll be taking songs sung in bars and turning them into worship music! Oh wait, some of our hymns from them...
I'll admit that I didn't watch the whole video, definitely not the whole series, but I saw enough to know that he leaves the words completely out of the videos. It seems to me that probably matters. A lot.
Some hymns are not even theologically sound! Not on huge issues, but still wrong. I hate when I see people arguing against the style of music.
We are allowed to covet the gifts, the Holy Spirit, and other Holy things like the presence of God. At least some contemporary music is annointed by God and encourages this. Just like Psalms from Davids time. The music then was modern because it was a new song to the Lord. As long as the Lord is the center of the worship.
