  • You're hindering communication, by correcting someone who could easily recreate the same scenario but with a person who doesn't understand. By not correcting someone you are thus being an asshole to the person who will end up confused by the incorrect usage of said word or words. Your argument is invalid and you should read a book. Also, unsubscribed because you're an insufferable jackass with no hint of higher thought.

  • Great job ! Thanks !

  • hallelujah praise the lord

  • To err is to be human, but to incessantly correct people smacks of being an asshole. Language morphs over time. The definitions, pronunciations & spellings of words aren't static. Case in point, the contemporary definition of villain is an evildoer. The word itself stems from villein. Villein comes from villanus, which plainly interpreted means a farmhand. Over time, it became synonymous with bad people. So yeah, the English language is ad hoc in the first place, so cut the crap will ya.

  • @tonyGjr2(Cont'd) If the substance of someone's statements and/or questions are received within reason, it'd be a display of snobbery to delight in correcting them. Pretty soon, no one will want to talk with you if you're that person, & thus proficiency with any language will become a moot issue. That said, I will end my two cents with a disclaimer. There are times for colloquialisms & shorthand. The real test is knowing when & when not to use them. Youtube should be fairly lax though IMO.

  • It's fucking basic knowledge, try putting the wrong you're or your on a college application or your CV idiot. If no one corrected your grammar, do you think you would have gotten a job or a college placement? Fuck no, grow the fuck up and start using proper grammar... for the benefit of all of us.

  • @destinystruth Well, since he said he does in fact know the difference, he probably would use proper grammar on an application.

  • @destinystruth Ah, you are from UK, I am going to have fun with you. I will hold you to the highest standard when it comes to English. A few minutes ago I had looked at several of your videos and descriptions, needless to say your English was less than impeccable. Would you care to explain why your grammar was so horrendous? Granted, it was a video description, but is that a valid excuse? If Jory's reason is not acceptable, neither is yours.

  • @GrammarGI It's funny how you have to visit my page to directly pull information out to put against me. But okay, you win, you got me... I'm a stupid hypocrite. But my point is, there is a context to correcting someone's grammar- if you correct someone's grammar on Youtube, that's a borderline dick move. But I see it as helping someone to improve their own English, you're low if you use grammar corrections as insults.

  • @destinystruth when i talk tho i talk for speed not to be proper. see how I am talking? this is for speed and size since i have to also deal with a character limit. you're takes more space than your and is also slower than your though takes longer than tho and i am still transfering the same sounds so you can understand me which is my whole point on here however me personally i use ur because it is far shorter than even your see my point?

  • @GrammarGI Holy shit calm your tits, I shouldn't have even started on the topic of grammar with a dick wad like yourself. Like I said, I lose, you win. You're the grammar champion.

  • @destinystruth You made a big deal about it from the start. Yes you said you lost and I win, but it was said with sarcasm. Why do you regret bringing up grammar? Aren't you british people the ones who speak the most pure form of the language and I am some redneck in a trailer park somewhere in USA. cuz i are so dum n stoof

  • @destinystruth dat wut i jus dun did sed ROTFL

  • @destinystruth cuz r skul sistem so infeeror to yers n stoof ah are must bee stoopid

  • @destinystruth Oh, by the way, you start with the word "but" a lot. Starting with the word "but" is okay to do, but is informal and also looks like a mess when done too often. I am just throwing it out there to make you aware. By the way, whenever I correct someone, I almost always use proper grammar to do so. In addition, I would like to say that the only people I correct are the ones who make a big deal about it in the first place.

  • Your a asshole four saying I'm a asshole!

    Asshole.

    Gramma nazi's FTW!

    (btw jaywalking is illegal, asshole)

  • Grammar, You're

  • @DubbleTakes I am pretty sure he did that on purpose in order to make a point.

  • What if you use the wrong grunts?

  • @skysaber89 Then open a window!

  • Speaking and writing in our own language should be an assumed skill, not a,"formality".

  • Learn how to spell, asshole.

  • @Zer0FiveSeven it was intentional... i'm guessing that wasn't obvious to you. =/

  • it's funny because there's a grammatical error in the title itself. you're** ;)

  • Grammar???

  • its grammar :/

  • Comment removed

  • "Asshole" is subjective. If I correct someone, they may think that I am an asshole. If however someone sends me incomprehensible garbage that they expect me to decipher because they are too lazy to put effort into using basic grammar in their writing, I may think of them as an asshole.

  • @Mirakelpung You know that: as long as you correct someone, you noticed an (some) error(s). As long as you notice an (some) error(s), you understand what the individual wrote (or said). As long as you understand, it's not incomprehensible...

  • @TheKingoftheTrollz grunts and pictures FTW

  • Comment removed

  • just cuz u can't comrepehdnable the situational understand in to they of those that spoked to the point in understandable them and then comprehend what their said to them and until then dont spoke

  • that is definitely portsmouth nh

  • I'm with you on this Jory, Idgaf if I used the wrong word. YOU PEOPLE KNOW WHAT I MEAN. You just want to correct me to feel better about yourself and be a little bitch.

  • But anyway, I agree that nitpicking is entirely unnecessary. I don't go around correcting things on the internet. I'd explode from the sheer frustration of it all. My previous comment was focused on the other posters who think this video is saying that poor grammar is okay. read: "I agree grammer is a little betch :l" That's why I started with saying the video peeves me off.

  • This video peeves me off so much. If you're a native English speaker, GUESS WHAT! You should know basic, simple English! There is NO excuse. Your poor communication skills are NOT other people's problems. "This is the Internet who car--" No! That's not even close to good enough. Learn it. I'm sick of people having the attitude that mediocrity is okay. Fact is, if you're American, chances are English is the only language you speak/write fluently. One language is just too much for you people?

  • But Jory, "Your" and "You're" mean different things.

"Your" implies ownership of something - "Is this your coat?"

"You're" is a contraction of "You are" - "You are a good person".

Spelling and punctuation are there for a reason, as they can change the context of what you're saying.

Similarly "There" "There's "Their" "They're" all have different meanings and uses :) .

  • I agree grammer is a little betch :l

  • Never in the history of YouTube has a "totally wrong-er" video been made.

    Never.

    Ever.

  • he spelled grammar wrong.

  • @nataliethedragoness A little late there lol I was first to say that still glad everyone else caught that too see thats the problem with calling yourself a grammar nazi it makes them a target lol that is called grammar D-Day according to urban dictionary lol

  • Comment removed

  • I'm a Grammer Nazi, and proud of it. It's just who I am.

  • @BringMehTheBrides Calling yourself a Grammar Nazi often makes you a target, doesn't it? I am not a Grammar Nazi per se, I am more of a Grammar G.I. I correct the grammar of Grammar Nazis when I find them. I would also like to point out that the word "Grammar" does not have an "e" in it.

  • @BringMehTheBrides if your a grammar nazi, why did you spell grammar wrong.

  • The word "your" in the title should be "you're" lmao im jk with ya idc about those things(I use your alot cause its faster and i hate going over character limit cause my many comments look like im spamming) unless someone starts with me first lol but yeah Jory you are very smart if I was you since you obviously are probably smarter than the people who bring it up in the first place do what I do start speaking in perfect grammar for a little while and at the same time correct them on everything

  • @MRFCKJEWTUBE In urban dictionary it says doing that is Grammar D-Day lol correcting a grammar nazi on grammar mistakes. You are right by the way, it does hinder communication because I have noticed people who insult my grammar in my chat kind of speak end up being scared to say so much as a word because i proofread everything down to the smallest detail so even grammar nazis communication becomes hindered aka victory lmao

  • ya i run into those ppl alot their just trolls they just want attention next time lets just point and grunt at them

  • First anyway there tree is small while they're tree is small. Their is a tree in my yard. You to can be good while those too can be good. Im goimg two go two walmart.

  • @josryaarm Most people wont do that many in their comment but if they did they are TRYING to be annoying which would be hindering communication as well

  • This is a big pet peeve of mine. Yes, I might know what someone means but, when the wrong word is used, it makes the author appear uneducated. So the Internet is an informal place, but there is enough clutter on it. No need to add more to it with nonsense. If people are going to write, they need to learn how to spell. Now I expect to be mocked for my sentence structure.

  • @MJavert13 but learning how to spell isnt always the issue sometimes someone who spells wrng could be smrt too you kno and kno how to spell still. i am vry smart nd very good at grammar in fct iv clowned so many ppl who thought i was dum and couldnt spell or use grammar right

  • @MJavert13 Learning how to spell isn't always the issue. Sometimes someone who spells wrong could be smart and know how to spell too. I am very smart and extremely good at grammar. I've embarrassed so many people who have thought I was unintelligent and couldn't use proper grammar. Do you see the point I am trying to make?

  • If you don't understand English... Pineapple, chicken, monkey, butt.

  • I believe what you are talking about is the grammar nazis being assholes? I am in fact a grammar nazi when I want to be, but only when someone corrects me first. I speak using my chat way of talking just about everywhere and people always find this need to be Captain Obvious about it. Once I get corrected so much as one time, I start picking out capitalization, punctuation, spelling etc.

  • @MRFCKJEWTUBE Once I am corrected even once, I will pick out every little thing they do that is incorrect. I will correct them to the point they have lost all desire to even say one word.

  • i get your point jory but some people (including myself ) have OCD and have to correct grammar and such.

  • You're right Jory, I understand what you mean. Why would I waste my time to say you using the wrong words. Obviously some negative comments you're getting on here, want to be cunts. But who gives a fuck! :-)

Give me my thumbs down & flag this for a tin of spam you faggots!

  • YEAH PORTSMOUTH!

  • This video is actually fantastic. Giggled my little nips off. Point made.

  • I feel Stephen Fry is relevant here: /watch?v=J7E-aoXLZGY

  • I have decided to favorite this video so i can link all the grammar and spelling trolls i see to it.

  • And yes, every time you make a grammatical error it changes the meaning of the sentence. "Your" has a significantly different meaning than "You're", etc. Likewise, using homonyms incorrectly also affects the meaning. "Tale" is not the same as "tail" in any dictionary... So yeah, it is kind of a big deal when you can't or just plain refuse to use any of them correctly. Like I said, you MIGHT AS WELL just be pointing and grunting for all your understanding of the language.

  • Being an asshole and just plain "not caring" that you look like an unintelligent ass that couldn't be bothered to pay attention during basic language courses throughout school is no excuse. As for "being lucky you're even using English to facilitate communication instead of just pointing and grunting", you might as well be pointing and grunting when you intentionally write sentences struktured liek diz all da tiem. Go back to school and relearn your native language, please.

  • Typos are one thing. If it was a mistake and you KNOW the proper form or correct whatever to use but accidentally messed up and forgot to proof read, then that's no problem. What I have a problem with is when people constantly use incorrect grammar or spelling, etc, and don't think there's a problem with it when there is. Using "your" instead of "you're" in the sentence "You're an asshole" can change the meaning of the sentence. I'm just trying to point out your mistake to help you.

  • It's not that we are an opinionated ass. We are not retarded. We don't care what people think especially if it bothered us, if we did what everyone says we wouldn't be who we are we would be you. That's what makes us different we're not trying to do/be what others want us to do/be we're who we are so it's society that needs to get use to us let us be who we are......

  • You sire, are an opinionated ass who is unwilling to see the world from other people's perspectives. I myself am a grammar nazi, I'll admit it, but seriously, what would happen if grammar was destroyed? We would go back to pointing and grunting, it has the same meaning as a well formed sentence, right? Language is what makes the world awesome, and you're just too retarded to realize that.

  • *Grunt*

  • @paulsavage33

    Lern 2 spell

  • @paulsavage33

    Lern to spell.

  • Soez... When peoplz sayz: did he died, itz okayz?

  • every time some one post a comment like lean to spell or w.e on the net im gonna share this vid

  • @hoggjames1 A superior nob.

  • You know who I blame on this misspelling thing? Cell phones and Twitter, If it weren't for their 200 or less characters per message, people would care about spelling to get their message clear. And for those naysayers, all I can say is u tink im not sayin da troof?

  • You are just hindering communication, and you're a BI-

  • Some people don't want their culture watered down by dumbed down fucks... I suppose.

  • Jeet?

  • @magnacore11 No, I haven't eaten yet but I do intend too soon.

  • I don't correct people, but it they use words wrong and what they say sounds funny I'll make fun of them. I do like to make sure everything I write is correct though because I don't want to look like an idiot or have a grammar Nazi crack down on me.

  • There isn't enough grunting and pointing in this video.

  • It is funny that you are basically calling Jon an asshole in this video.

  • "In order to correct someone's grammer you imply that you understand what they were trying to say..."

No, wrong. I'm implying that I live half the god-damned world away from you, and I speak to you in YOUR native language which I had to learn in addition to mine, and I learned it better than you did. I'm speaking and writing it better than people who's original language it is - it's like beating somebody at their own game. And I'm damn proud of it.

  • @Eudaimonium As some of us are aware, you have done very well. You understand the need for accuracy and precision in interpersonal and intercorporate communications. Proper grammar, structure, and spelling are part of this accuracy and precision. If grammar, structure, and spelling are innacurate, meaning is lost. Note that in North America, "grammer" with an "e" before the ending "r" is a slang term for a drug deal. (See Part II)

  • @Eudaimonium Part II

Here we are discussing "grammar", ending in "ar", the system of the forms and uses of words in a particular language. When I first saw this video title, I thought that Jory was upset over some street deal gone sour ...

  • @billg519 Yes, you are correct. If you do not care for the accuracy of your written words, it's like you don't care for the reader who may or may not have a difficult time understanding you for it.

I didn't know about that slang term. It's funny now in this context.

I'm glad that you respect the proper writing and I am yet to see a single spelling mistake (or even a typo) in your messages. I take my hat off to you :)

  • watch the whole videwo and no one will have a comeback to what jorey says

  • @Jory i was suspended today for calling my English 12 teacher an asshole for correcting a sentence of mine.

  • grunt.....

  • i saw this on tv

  • I am a nonapologetic Grammar Nazi. But consider again the sentence, "That tree is theres." That is a breakdown of communication because I don't know if you are trying to point out the location of a tree or assign ownership to it. If someone does somehow understand what you were trying to say, it is for the best that they correct you so that you don't use the same faulty grammar with someone who won't understand it.

  • @JackBond1234 hey. fuck you.

  • @gabeluvsbonnie no u

  • @JackBond1234 What he is saying is that if you do not understand what someone is trying to say, then ask them to clarify, but if you understand what they meant but they made a grammar mistake, then don't correct them

  • @n64p3 And what I'm saying is that just because you understand someone when they make a grammar mistake doesn't mean other people will. It is proper to correct peoples' mistakes so that they don't end up looking stupid to other people. And it always feels better when you sound smart to other people. Just look at Jon's video on the same topic. He knows what I'm talking about.

  • @JackBond1234 Always a nob, doomed to be a nob.

  • I correct on one of three occasions:

    1. Good humor

    2. Undermining an argument

    3. Purposely bring an asshole, when it's deserved.

And about the "try this with your friends" I do that, it's hilarious.

  • The random guy. Oh my God, that was hilarious.

  • You can't talk about grammer, your American you speak ENGLISH with a shitty accent. In ENGLAND we speak ENGLISH property because we are in ENGLAND.

    Was that clarification.

Like if your English & proud (go to hell though if your Scottish).

  • @hoggjames1 oh you mean with your croocked teeth?

  • @hoggjames1 You speak English properly, do you? "You're" means you are, but "your" is possessive. So when you say "your American", "your English", and "your Scottish", you are not, in fact, fulfilling the propriety standards you hold yourself to. In the future, you might want to double check that you're speaking English properly before you boast about it.

  • @kpaquariusp Well, the point of the video was anti grammer Nazi, and why they are complete pricks. Looks like someone shown their true colours. Prick.

  • I'm not missing Jorey's point.

Jorey comes off as a self-opinionated ass. He argues people who correct grammar are at fault for communication breakdowns, when in fact his 'rules don't apply to me' attitude is the issue.

He can't be bothered with doing something the right way; it's too much trouble for Jorey to remember how to use or spell all those words - it's your job because you're the reader.

BTW: Speech therapy to for that annoying lisp, and cosmetic dentistry for the unsightly diastema.

  • @JMFitter its not that he cant be bothered to do it the right way its that he is in a place (the internet) that is informal therefore does not require a top notch level of grammar/spelling so there should be no problem not doing completely right however then ther is assholes who feel the need to point out and reticule others for there mistakes even though it doesn't matter

  • @JMFitter Jory*

  • @JMFitter something tells me I just gained a new fan... YUS!!!

  • @JMFitter here's a fun fact, no one gives a shit about what you think, dickweed! ^^

  • @JMFitter

    You completely missed the point.

  • @JMFitter I think you meant to say that 'he argues -that- people who correct grammar etc...' Again, 'all -of- those words', not 'all those words'. Seriously though, if you're going to make a point about grammar, you should probably pay particular attention to your own. I'm not being a Grammar Nazi, I am in fact a Grammar Nazi Nazi because I am sick of assholes correcting everyone elses spelling or grammar mistakes when they are not perfect either.

  • @JMFitter I love that you continually misspell Jory's name too. :)

  • @EzraHorne I'm not misspelling Jory's name, you're just being an asshole because you know what I mean.

  • @JMFitter touché :)

  • @EzraHorne

     ;)

  • @JMFitter... Mor like jmfaggot...take that self opinionated ass!

  • Comment removed

  • i under stand butt dosent thingz lik this go anoying

  • @TamaDoroKuru yes... but that's not what I'm arguing here... I'm not defending the people who intentionally make communication harder... I'm arguing that simple mistakes don't need to be corrected as they are, in fact, mistakes...

  • If you knew what I meant, don't be an asshole about it.

  • LOL

  • What is worse: a grammar mistake or being an asshole? *random person walks by* an asshole. See? He agrees with me. LOLm

  • Let's eat, grandma.

    Let's eat grandma.

    GRAMMAR SAVES LIFE'S!!!

  • @JohnTheChannel lives*

  • @JohnTheChannel is the spelling mistake in your comment intentional?

  • lol 100% true

  • Pineapple, Chicken, Monkey But. LOL

  • At last someone is on my side, thank you

  • Grammar is a VERY important thing, Jory. Capitalization makes the difference between helping your uncle Jack off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse.

    ... Think about it!

  • @NoobLper made me crack up!

  • @NoobLper lol its all the same dumb azz

  • Ok, it's possible to understand what someone is trying to say despite a grammar mistake, but it makes reading somewhat more difficult. It's like trying to read a Facebook post from a 11 year old girl, more numbers than letters and absolutely no vowels! Eventually I will understand what's written there, but only after wasting lots of time decrypting it!

  • Grammar*

  • youur your you're? You Are tree? lol

  • **Grammar......

  • Jory, have you seen Jons' video about grammar and being a grammar Nazi? I'm pretty sure you have but I just thought I'd check. Does this mean that you think Jon is an asshole for correcting people's grammar all the time? He said he hates poor grammar and just wants to correct it all the time. I can't help but laugh my ass of at all the smart ass comments, Jory, I'm sorry. Don't think of me as an asshole but I agree with Jon. I don't want to abandon the English language or kill it. Cool video =)

  • @jeremyshaw Jory's view is good for social networking. When I'm writing a paper or a memo I want people to correct my grammar, but on facebook if you got what I meant then the correction isn't needed. Note this does not work for forums. People really need to check themselves on forums.

  • Stay in school!

  • Grammar is spelled Grammar, and your should be you're.

  • Tell us how you really feel about Hooked on Phonics

  • "This is shit" or "This is the shit". English can be confusing.

  • I get annoyed with some grammar and spelling. It has to get to the point where I'm taking an inordinate amount of time trying to decipher what the hell was just sent to me. Their They're mistakes and to too mistakes are incredibly common and while if someone asked me what was the difference I could tell you. However if I'm quickly typing text messages and sending it out I am barely even looking at what I'm typing and just typing what "sounds" right in my head.

  • I'm okay with being an asshole.

  • I don't agree with you, but i don't correct either. Correcting grammer actually helps people to not make that mistake in the future, preventing a future filled with sentences like: "how shud ay now how to taip correktly?" or "They're taiping is so bed!". Learn your language, d*mn it!

  • Long time fan, but this made me lose a lot of respect for you Jory. I get it, over-correction is annoying, it just makes the person correcting seem arrogant. But the fact that you're too lazy to bother with the correct versions, ever, makes you seem unintelligible, and that's just fact. Hand me two resumes with the only difference being the spelling of "there", you can imagine who I'd hire. Let it go from time to time, I agree. But personally, learn how the fuck to spell.

  • @RaGe2009 The only problem with your argument here is Jory is talking about casual conversation and people correcting on the internet. I'm sure anyone would be more careful in word choice and spelling when it comes to something as formal as a resume. When it comes down to it, grammar on the internet really doesn't matter. Think about it. "I can haz cheeseburger". There is so much wrong with that sentence but it is still all over the internet.

  • @Jibe1994 Unfortunately, i do.

  • @RaGe2009 like he said the internet is an imformal place and as long as you get your point across and the other party understands then who gives a shit like for example if a person did not speak English but you spoke the language that they speak and you understand what they just told you would you berate them for not using English? no cause that would make you an asshole. see my point?

  • I don't always correct spelling, but I have a big problem with people using then/than wrong. I don't give a fuck about everything else

  • what the heck, when did you become so smart???

  • @itsmedee1998 So smart? What makes you think that?

  • GRUNT!!

  • Jory cunt be so smut

  • Here's the thing. There is a huge difference between helping your Uncle jack off a horse, and helping your Uncle Jack off his horse.

  • @UncleSamProduction This this this THIS

  • @UncleSamProduction

but that's punctuation, different from grammar and spelling

  • @UncleSamProduction

There is also different emphasis when talking than in typing. Plus I don't see the commas in your sentence making it sound dirty or not, just a capitol J on jack. I'm not trying to be a douche but just point out something.

  • @zeldamstr666 I am only implying capitalization. Besides you can find this comment on Google. I am just using this as an example.

  • If you think "15 items or less" is acceptable, then you deserve every goddamned correction you receive. Smile and take it!

  • thats what i've been trying to explain to my english teachers lolz

  • Whilst we grow up with English as our primary language, we develop an intrinsic ability to correct miscommunication to a certain extent.

Body language, inflection, basically how you say something is more important than what you say.

Think about the Cockney rhyming slang Londoners use. My favourite, "Sunny Beach." Unless you grew up hearing stuff like that, you probably won't know what it means.

I know grade school teachers were assholes when they told us "can I" and "may I" are different. :p

  • Yes, the communication has happened without significant problems, but the main problem when you use the wrong spelling of a word or the wrong word altogether is that people who know the difference (the majority) will assume that you are uneducated and not take you seriously. Perhaps this is an unfair judgement but on the internet, your words all that you have to represent yourself, and if you represent yourself as someone who can't spell, people tend to disregard what you have to say.

  • Agreed, but such internet talk also make me wonder if english is just becoming incoherent to those that type it, with all the shorthand and such.

  • @Jory, @Jon disagrees with you :P

  • this is amazing i was just having this argument with my friends and i totally agree ...i'm not going to hit extra keys just so you feel better you, you know what i mean get over it

  • New favorite video on YouTube!!!!!!!

  • .....that's what my mom does and I CORECT MYSELF sometimes
