Even better than hooking the edge of the bait is not having the hook in the bait at all. When we live bait or skipbait here for marlin with circles, we have a small distance between the bait and the hook. It allows the circle hook even more freedom for the cam-action to take place and gives better hook ups. I have only missed one marlin on a circle, and that was my own fault (not setting the hook properly/stumbling from a large swell).

They callem circle hooks cuz they circle round and bit you in the ass. Missed fish, and one of the funest things about fishen is the hook set.
