Someone told me once that when you put something around a cat's back (around their vertebrae, since their spines are so flexible, they are more sensitive) you are cutting off their circulation... kinda like when your leg falls asleep when you sit on it the wrong way for too long.

It does not hurt them to have anything around their back, but the reason they fall over in the start might have something to do with the sensitive hairs(like whiskers) they have on their body, since they use these alot!

Something worn over them probably "disturbs" the signals - until they understand that they wear something, its stuck on them, then they move around with no problem also with clothes on them.

Poor baby if he cant breathe but my cat would be crying and trying to get it off if she can't breath. I have a bobtail cat and she got caught on some old blinds (which I no longer have) and she tried to get my attention by violently thrashing and growling.
