Their trains are the best in the world. Simply avoid rush hour (try the Los Angeles freeways during the heights of rush hour) and there's never a problem. I take trains & subways in Japan (which are far cleaner than those in London and the U.S. and Europe) all the time and it's almost always smooth sailing. No need for a car there - the trains and subways are that good.

Mitsubishi, Toyota, Nissan, Suzuki, Honda, Mazda, Subaru, Daihatsu, Acura, Lexus, Infiniti, Scion, Isuzu, and there are probably more, those are just off the top of my head.

American cars always without fail have awful brakes, awful suspension, awful steering, and just generally are pretty bad. Ford is the exception, but even they don't really compare with the European or Japanese market.
