Actually, the true power of a strong vocal comes from the middle of the body. Drop your awareness down to your diaphragm (you can locate that by barking like a dog - no kidding). With a little practice you'll see what I mean.
why did i have to be 2 when this happened? I like their new singer, and it wasn't Cantrell's band anyway in terms of songwriting, but I'm a little sad I will never get to see Staley live =(
this version, the rio de janeiro version, and the jools holland '93 are my favorite live versions of Them Bones on youtube. this and rio being the best. his shrill between the first and second verses on the two are more intense than any other versions out there. it's un-duplicate-able. If that makes sense
Just in case my comment is still here (the one I deleted), It wasn't directed at this clip. This is pretty awesome! But, for some reason, a clip of a HORRID cover of 'Would' came up and I was commenting on that. Boy, it was awful!!
lol, I love Mike from :24 to :29. To be able to spin around and still keep playing, that's talent!! He's still my all-time favorite musician. I have a self-made AIC collage. This video should help explain why.

Not really true, that's just Layne's ability to master his vocals. He just has really strong vibrato coupled with the ability to control it to the extent of being able to apply it to every level of his vocal range whereas many people using vibrato are restricted to keeping it at a certain level.
@holynapkin lol yeah i learned to sing to alice songs and im telling you i finally broke my voice enough to sing the chorus of man in the box and rain when i die perfectly but its so damn hard to master how he uses vibrato on those fucking high notes. its crazy
Try singing from the chest & using more air (which alot of times equates to being louder) and you may find hitting those higher notes easier. For songs like Man in the Box or Rain When I Die, just try going into the high note strong, 'specially because Layne's voice jumps from low to high in those songs. Just my two cents as a fellow vocalist :)
I was just a kid in elementary school when AIC got popular. I never had the chance to see them. Probably could have in 1998 if i was really into them by that point. I have been listening since 1994. Got hooked after hearing Man in the Box. I know that there are far better AIC songs out there. They did not put out one bad song IMO. Thank you so much for posting these videos. Takes me back!

laynbe is singing flat on these songs wen is aw them they rocked then again maybe he was flat then too and i didnt notice from being drunk maybe he was fukd up too lol.
I never saw them live, I never even knew about them until I was 14 much besides remembering hearing Rooster and Man in the Box on the radio when I was like 6...and I'm 19 now. But man, seriously wtf happened to good music. I won't talk down on rap, or any other genre I don't have taste in...but rock has gone to shit.
Hey now I had a Huffy and they were not as bad as Fag Out Boy, we are on the right track. I really am bummed out at this American Idol generation of crap music we need a Rock N Roll Bailout please would some talent rise up.
Everything cycles, it always comes back to good rock eventually. Unfortunately Seattle was the last time it has come back in recent history. You get alot of weaker spin-off bands like bush that try to cash in, and it gets watered down and dies. It will come back, always has... Rock On
Layne attacks the mic with his YEAH :)
