You know, this performance was the day she found out her voice teacher, Beverly Peck Johnson, passed away. Ms. Fleming describes the experience in her book, so when you say she can do it in her sleep it's almost accurate. In her book she says, "I don't even remember doing the performance and after it happened I just cried." So. Sad.
All this talk about sopranos and would be sopranos. Has anyone stopped to listen to the Base? I think Pape is quite phenomenal. He makes singing sound so effortless and the voice pours out. He can lighten his voice one moment and then going down a scale get darker
Have you seen the other video - Renee Fleming with Giergiev recording sessions? It's got Renee with the libera me - amazing espression, and her voice just suits it. It would be great to see/hear more of that recording.
it is so funny that Urmana is the mezzo here... because Renee was the best soprano I ever heard live in VRequiem till then and some years later Urmana was the other "soprano" that stole my heart (together with Renee) in VRequiem, when Violetta successfully changed Fach.
judging by the fact shes singng the mezzo solo I'd go with mezzo... but according to her own bio page she started off as a mezzo and has become a soprano singing Isolde, Lady Macbeth, Ariadne etc
She hasn't figured it out yet either, has been moving from mezzo to soprano rep. In either case she's turned from a very promising singer into a rather dull one.
i performed that incredible work for 2 years... it was ... wonderful....great... i always listen to my own cd with the Lacrimosa and the Dies Irae.....
I have seen this before. Would you be able to send other clips?? I would love to hear the Dies Irae, and the Libera me from the end?? It is a great performance.
This has to be the worst performance of this version that i have heard.

The results are obvious. What we don't see is the hours it took to get to this level.

I like light highs in Fleming, I don't like when she pushes them, very nice voices

She is a mezzo. She trained her voice to soprano like some female singers did before her to sing dramatic soprano-parts. Anyway - she is great.

My apology. I had confused with the EMI involving Angela Gheoghiu. This is a live recording. No commercial release was made so far.

Suggest listening to the CD by Gigli/Bjorling et al from that era, to learn about the Art of Singing this work.
