I always thought it was interesting that Viet alphabet had a similar sound for the letter "y" as Spanish... probably some other languages (romantic languages) with a similar sound...
for anyone who wants to learn vietnamese: you could say vietnamese alphabet the way spanish speakers do with their alphabet.... vietnamese speakers still understand... except: g (i think)
My name Minh Sang, 22 years old. I am a Vietnamese. Now, I’m learning English. If you want to learn Vietnamese, I can help you. And you can help me learn English. Add nick yahoo minhsangk8 for contact me. Nice to meet you. !!!
That's interesting... I and my cousins, who are from Vietnam, say "bay" for "b" and "say" for "c", as well as, "day" for "d"... and for the soft d, "yay." Are we wrong or is both ways of saying the alphabet ok?
@RiceMonkey0ll : yeah, we also say it that way but nowadays we don't use it more often. They don't teach us in school anymore. They did in the past because my parents say it that way ^^

This is definitely NOT the way that I was taught to pronounce, but it is certainty the way the now communist country is teaching kids how to pronounce.
cám ơn :) dấu sắt phế qua dầu quyền kéo lại dấu nặng một chấm dấu hỏi công công dấu ngã nằm ngang nằm ngang dấu ngã cong cong dấu hỏi một chấm dấu nặng kéo lại dấu quyền phế qua dấu sắt chào= (a) (o) (oa) (quyền) (ào) (chờ) (a) (cha) (o) (chao) (quyền) chào :)
I am officially in love with this language. I am a bit worried that there may be sounds that the alphabet does not account for. Just like in english. For instance, there is no letter that makes the zh sound in the word transfusion. We just have to learn that sion is pronounced zhun like in the word transfusion. In the vietnamese word for 3, ba. To me, the B that sounds like the west african Gb, where you suck in air slightly with your lips rather than blow out. but i don't see that letter here.
@mariyamtselalu Good ear. It belongs to general class of glottalized consonants. Viet's realization of the glottally-coarticulated consonants varies from speaker to speaker. Similar phenomenon is seen in th, d, g, kh, etc. Glottalized consonants can be traced back to Nostratic era. Believe it or not, native American languages in Na-Dene family (Tlingit, Navajo, Apache) are heavy in glottalized consonants.
@tadpolenese Late reply but here it is anyways. It is fascinating to know that over ten thousand years after the migration from asia to america across the Bearing Straight there is strong elements of the language that remains. Simply incredible.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for making these videos! My parents and relatives all speak the Southern dialect, so all of the "learn Vietnamese" CDs and videos out there (which teach the Northern dialect) aren't so useful to me personally.
@se2cond Dude, there are plenty of videos out there with the northern accent. I had to actually search a while before I found this video. There is no "right" accent or pronounciation. Plenty of other languages like Chinese and Japanese have different dialects and accents. Just like how Mandarin isn't better than Cantonese, Kansai dialect is better than Osaka dialect, etc, the northern accent isn't "better" than the southern accent and vise versa.
It is not wrong and that is very offensive. That's like saying when people from Texas speak English in a southern accent, they're saying the words all wrong.
Please post more videos and faster. I am learning vietnamese and it helps alot. Thank you. It would be even better if you break down the meaning of each words,
almost french here...especially the y part
