Opinion: In hindsight, Madonna's career moves have always been so calculated, she didn't want her first television appearance on a talk show to seem like a promotion at a time when she was at the hight of her coolness. So she coat-tailed Bernhard's appearance to make like an unofficial spot. Look how Letterman is drooling to talk to Madonna. I'm not saying Bernhard and Madonna weren't genuine friends, but with Madonna there's nothing she doesn't do that would adversely affect her career.

You can really appreciate the caliber star she was too. Conquered the music world, had been in films, now she was doing a Broadway play, married to Sean Penn.
