Buzz is probably embellishing the story a little. But it's possible he caught a flash of igniting gases shortly after ignition. Watching the later missions, from 15 onwards where the rover camera records the takeoff, there is definitely a flash.

@thecubanism We went to the moon. Apollo was real. Get over it. The LRO showed pictures. Go look at them. The cornercubes are proof that the Apollo craft went to the moon. It left earth with humans on it. With just a little work with google every one one of the questions can be answered. I suggest you do the work and stop asking silly questions in these comments. @John123DAoust I don't hope to change the minds of the true believers. I also know that some on the "we never went to the moon" side don't really believe the tripe they are selling. The best I can hope to do is to prevent their claims from going uncorrected and thus prevent them from fooling others. We see dishonesty on the other side of the argument so this is obviously not a true disagreement over facts. It is those in favor of the truth vs those who wish to propagate a lie.

@thecubanism The Petrified Forest National Park was created in the 1950s. It is a really amazing place. People discussed it at the time. There were TV program made about it. Apollo was not the only thing going on in the world. in that era.
Yes, placing the cornercubes with a robot would have been just as good from a science point of view. However, the US was in a race to put a person on the moon so they did it with the Apollo crew. Apollo was for real.
