Latino is a name for people of European descent from the Latin countries of Italy, France, and Spain.. For a South American or a Mexican to go and call themselves "Latino" is to define themselves as European which they aren't. If you have Indian blood in you and you call yourself "Latino", then you have denied your own Indian roots.

Latino is a name for people of European descent from the Latin countries of Italy, France, and Spain.. For a South American or a Mexican to go and call themselves "Latino" is to define themselves as European which they aren't. If you have Indian blood in you and you call yourself "Latino", then you have denied your own Indian roots.

@Chitownboy1023 , indigneous and, to a lesser extent, mixed peoples of the Americas tend to be less aggressive as the European settlers. Being submissive, these mixed people tend to assert their own rights such as their culture, language, and even their race labels. Clearly, a "Latin" implies a person of Latin origin of which most mextizos aren't.

@freeqwerqwer Interesting comment , but isn't Mexico Latin since Spainiards were the ones that settled there to begin with not to mention Frenchmen during Mexico's conflict with the French? What do you have to say for those people who were born out of any type of relationship from Spanish and French settlers. They are Latino, Mexican, and Hispanic. Not all europeans are white because there are many that are darker than brown. I'm just wondering..

@furiousjuffowup , A "Latino" is someone w/ connection to either Spain, Italy, France but people from C. & S.America are not just settlers from Latin countries but the Incas, the Quechuan, Mayans, and various Indian groups. To call these indigneous people "latino" is to deny their true identity. That is why hispanics want to find a label which truely identifies themselves. Some have chosen "La Raza", "Mezticos", etc but to only call themselves "latino" is to give in to the Europeans again.

You have this phenomena happening everywhere in the world. Look at Africa, look at India and Mexico.
