@NearAbbeyRoad Yes you're quite correct they did, that'll teach me to blindly cut and paste from wikipedia. I've amended the info. Personally I'll always think of it as a Pogues song, who's version also makes for cracking karaoke after a few jars :-)
There's an old 50's (I think) version I've been looking for, only heard it once and can't remember who it was :(
The UK & Ireland owe a lot to the Spinners. They lifted "British Isles" folk music to high levels, when it was just about dying. Without the Spinners we I would not be writing this.
To live in the North of England and feel the lyrics of this song grab you in a way that you don't know why after such a long time is a tribute to Ewan and Northern people
I've heard this version before, but I love it. Also nice to hear from someone who knows that the song is about Salford and has nothing whatsoever to do with Ireland!
Best version keeps being the original by Ewan Mccoll by far.

The song was made popular by the Spinners not the Dubliners

The Salford council should have kept their ruddy claps shut. Instead of stifling criticism, they should have done something about it.

The original words had Salford in them. The Irish have stolen the song thinking it is theirs - like many so-called Irish folk songs, it is English.
