  • 2 weeks Nell??? Damn your weak. Lay down like the chief used to. This is how you do it Nell. SAMANTHA, YOUR GROUNDED FOR 6 MONTHS! Or if I had been Nell, I would've gone to the Chiefs room gone in to his closet and gotten one of his belts, come back and thrown her over a kitchen chair, and let her have it, seeing as none of the girls ever got it when the Chief was around because Nell was always sticking up for them.

  • sam is too spiteful . and i felt sorry for her in the imagiary friend episode

  • Did the chief ever find out abut samantha putting joey in black face

  • @carmesundae2 We don't know, the subject was never brought up again after this episode.

  • yes it on the eipsode wear she steals the aqud car

  • Excellent episode. This tv show was so underrated, Nell is one of the best comedic/dramatic actresses on tv on par with Lucy, Carol, Mary Tyler and others. May she get the respect and her accolades in death that she deserved to get in life. Rest in total and complete peace. Nell Carter.

  • @bigjbsmooth So True.

  • @bigjbsmooth Amen BABY! Not only was Nell a talented actress,ut funny and brilliant comedian, she was also an GOD gifted soul singer whos voice was sheer beauty! I was only 9 when I saw my first episode and was hooked! I was very lucky to have heard such a gifted voice on tv...RIP Nelly and God bless you!

  • @bigjbsmooth Honestly, I wish this show was brought back. A modern version wouldn't be so good in my opinion.

  • @azariah15 Although I do agree with you, if it were to be on network TV, it would be waaayyyy too PC in this day, and age!!!

  • @bigjbsmooth Amen to that!!! She had such a wonderful singing voice!!!

  • Nell was a fantastic actress and singer! this was always one of my favorite shows. :)

  • Joey should have been disciplined for reading Sam's diary.

  • OH....I should have continued watching the episode before commenting....it's about a minstrel show....lol

  • Allstate dude! He was also on 227!

  • Isn't that a minstrel character on the front of that Tootsie song booklet?

  • @rassledassle82 Yes, Al Jolson spent some part of his career performing in blackface.

  • @alwrig Why was it offensive to perform in blackface?

  • @sam B*#ch please

  • I'm shocked people cant look past Sam using the word in the first season, she used it to make a very good point that she deserved to be upset. Point is, until this series, noone wanted to even approach the subject. It's like a bandage, sometimes the best way to approach it, is to rip right into it. But no what Nell meant was the day she heard Sam in effect CALL someone that, something she hasn't actually done. SHe said the word, but wasn't calling anyone that word.

  • @manramen She did direct the word at someone, that someone was Nell. While she didn't call Nell the term, She asked whether Nell would appreciate it if some called her a N word. Upset or not she shouldn't have directed her anger at an unrelated person, and what she did was just as bad as the involed person calling her a dumb P word. Also Nell didn't say call someone the N word because Yes Samantha hadn't actually done, she said Use the N word, which Sam had.

  • Sorry if I'm bothering you Briannas21 i was just wondering if you had anymore episodes of Gimme a Break you for seasons 1-5 if so could you please ost the rest of them up. Cuz I just can't find anymore episodes. You know like the one where Sam thinks the world is going to end. You know the other episodes. So if you have them could you post them up, please?

  • The preacher is the All State man. He is sooooo fine!!!

  • my mother sang How Great Thou Art at my grandmothers funeral.... still makes me cry. such a lovely song and nell sings it just beautifully =)

  • Damn, that's raw the help putting the kids on punishment. LOL !!!!! Glad, I never had a housekeeper, my parents whooped and punished me enough.

  • @sdseals2076- well, Nell wasnt really the housekeeper. At the beginning of the series it was explained that Nell and Margaret (the Chief's wife and the girls' mom) were friends (they became friends when Nell was a struggling singer); before Margaret died she asked Nell to stay with her daughters. Katie, the eldest, would sometimes call Nell "Mama".

  • @mnmcv1 Yeah, I knew about her being the mother's friend but I thought she was paid. I mean how did she live?

  • This episode surprised me. It was deeper than I thought. But I guess they forgot that Samantha used the N word in the first season. Why didn't someone spank joey's ass for reading Sam's journal. Nell did let him get away with murder.

  • Though Samantha was wrong to do what she did, Nell WAS acting exactly as she said she was.

  • Her voice reminds me alot of Patti LaBelle

  • Wasnt their an episode where sam said the word nigga?

  • @adorablebabi Yes

  • @adorablebabi Thats in season 1

  • @adorablebabi Yes. It was in the first season.

  • @adorablebabi Season 1... The episode "Samantha Steals a Squad Car".... The Chief and Nell are fighting over something and Samantha keeps trying to get a word into their conversation.

  • @adorablebabi Yeah in the first season. It's the one where she got mad and took off in the chief's police car.

  • @adorablebabi I think that episode is called "Sam Steals a Squad Car", or something.

  • @MrJP75 I'm still waiting for that to be uploaded.

  • I remember this episode when it first aired and it freaked us out. Seeing Joey in black face and Nell SCREAMING at Samantha. No offense but Nell was kind of mean to Sam, and she DID favor Joey. But when I saw this as a kid (I was about 10) I remember being so freaked out at how real this episode seemed!

  • @Mysterycat74 I never saw it before, but you're right. When Nell sees Joey up there, I'm thinking, OH SHIT, Sam's going to get it.

  • @Mysterycat74

yes, it was a great show. this was back in the days where sitcoms had heart and a message, i guess those days are gone.

  • SHIT GOT REAL

  • nell hasa very nice voice!

  • You go Nell.

  • Lara Jill Miller is so cute : )

  • I love Nell Carter : ) Too Bad she's no longer with us

  • "Y, U little!!!!!!!! U little baby!"

  • i didnt know you could say words like that on television 8/

  • sang it nell! i remember this episode so well. it was progressive at this time in that, all of the norman lear shows were off the air, except for "the jeffersons". and by this point it was no longer as poignant as it had been. nell was so truly uderrated. i miss her so much.

  • Nell Carter was one of the greatest performers of the 20th Century. Hands down in the top 10

  • WTH, HOW OLD IS DENNIS HAYSBERT?!

  • @bigjoy LOL, Probably in his 50's

  • @bigjoy I was thinking the same thing!!! Either he looked old for his age or he has held up very well.

  • Nell shoulda slapped Sam for blackfacing Joey in front of Nell's Church Congregation.

  • @jcp1977

I think that Nell understood that Sam had a lot of problems and was trying to handle them in a manner that was more humane.

  • @Smartboy8877 that's the truth, even though Sam never meant to offend her and alot of decent black people, she did it to get back at her for making her miss the camping trip and Joey because he's the son,Nell always wanted.

  • @jcp1977

I can see your point. I think that, under the circumstances, Nell handled the situation quite well.

  • isthis from a NBC airng

  • Sam dressed up Joey as Al Jolson!! LOL! Sam had some serious balls to set him up like that

  • BTW, I cried, too...

  • She said Nigga on TV? Talk about progressive!

  • @radudeATL Who did?

  • @Firegirlable Nell did, @ 9:43

  • @radudeATL Well, not really, it was said on Good Times and a lot on The Jeffersons and Sanford and Son

  • @Brieannas21 Very true. Not unprecedented... :)

  • @Brieannas21

I also heard it on "All in the Family" at one point.

  • @Brieannas21 Oh yes, that word was used on a regular basis in the '70's.

  • @Brieannas21 unfortunately it was and it was used very frequently.

  • Nell Carter is probably one of the most UNDERAPPRECIATED talents in entertainment....she and GIMME A BREAK never got the recognition they deserved which is sad.

  • @dh1173 So true, I Completely agree. Some people judged her more on her weight than her actual talent.

  • @Brieannas21 This is true. Sadly, NC had a very bad life riddled with depression, tragedy, and drugs. I am shocked that she never became a full-fledged singer.

  • @Brieannas21 Yep, and unfortunately, the media still does the same thing to women on a much worse level today. Nell Carter was so much more than a dress size - she was a multidisciplinary powerhouse!! Thank you for posting all of these wonderful videos!

  • @dh1173

In my opinion, there were a lot of shows that did not get the chance that they deserved. One that comes to mind at the moment is the "Home Court". I am quite fond of Pamela Reed. Are you at all familiar with her?

  • @Smartboy8877

I've heard the name before....wait, yes, she was on GRAND right?

  • @dh1173

Yes, Pamela Reed was on Grand. That was a couple of years before the Home Court. Unfortunatey, both shows flopped!

  • @Smartboy8877

She was the mom on JERICHO and on PARKS & REC as Amy Poehler's mom too, I think. I think I remember HOME COURT...she's also a great actress.

  • @dh1173

I have heard of Parks and Rec before but I have never seen it. Do you know if it is still on? Now that I know that she is in it, I might be willing to give it a chance!

  • @Smartboy8877

I think its a recurring role...I saw a snippet of an episode w/Ms. Reed in it and it was pretty funny. I think it'll be back on sometime mid-season hopefully. NBC's is BIG ratings trouble these days, not like the '80's when they had ALL the best sitcoms hands down.

  • I love Nell's voice.

  • Even with the voice, I still didn't recognize Dennis Haysbert!

  • @tvpirate05 Yeah he looks totally different on those Allstate Commercials LOL

  • @Brieannas21 - I also saw Dennis Haysbert on "Just the Ten of Us" later on in the 1980s where he played the friend of Coach Graham T. Lubbock (played by Bill Kirchenbauer).

  • @Brieannas21

    And in "Major League".

This ep is a good ep...it makes many think. (Like "South Park"...but more family-oriented).

  • lol i remember this episode like yesterday
