  • I have been a Manilow fan for as long as I can remember. This video is terrible, but if you had the chance to see him perform it live it was amazing. He put a lot more emotion into it live, and there were smoke machines blowing and deep purple and red lighting effects... I always thought that if he had released a video of his live performance this song would have done a lot better commercially

  • This video turns the song into a total joke.

  • I think I have fallen in love all over again with this song.

Barry Manilow's version is just really hits the mark for me!

  • It's a nice song, but I prefer something bombastic.

  • Both Meat and Barry do excellent versions of a great song.

  • I was all set to mock this because I'm not a fan of Manilow, but he did a good job with this song. I prefer Meatloaf's more intense version of it, but this is just a great song and Manilow did well with it. 2 different styles and both very good versions of the song.

The dross that passes for musicians these days could learn a thing or two from real talent like Meatloaf and Manilow.

  • Never thought I'd say this but this is much better than the Meat Loaf version.

  • I love this song. So captivating both song and video..

  • I love both versions. Meatloaf did an awesome job, as did Barry. But as someone else has pointed out; the two did the same song with different styles.

  • luh dis song...

  • Sucks! Meat Loaf's version is WAY better!

  • @xenafan1982....well...I just can't hear it....

  • Actually I like both versions. Both Barry Manilow and Meat Loaf made this track theirs, and did two different interpretations (Meat is all rage, Barry is more passive-aggressive) but both conveyed their heartbreak in daring her to tell them to their faces why she didn't love them anymore. Its a great track

  • The Meat Loaf original is better, though this isn't bad at all. I refer of course to the song, the video is showing its age.

  • Alway,s loved the Meatloaf. Never heard this version wish yhat was still the case, Made a great song sound really dull. Sorry Barry this is not a patch on MEATLOAF,s master.

  • Alway,s loved the Meatloaf. Never heard this version wish yhat was still the case, Made a great song sound really dull. Sorry Barry this is not a patch on mEATLOAF,s master.

  • Muy lindo video, me encanta y Barry mucho mas.

  • Glad Barry is not Irritating like Mimes.

  • awesome song.......meatloaf has a version of this song but not nearly as good!!!

  • Meat loaf is better, IMO...he sings the shit outta this. Manilow is still great his own way though

  • wow i love nirvana nickleback seether nine inch nails but dang this song rocks

  • Great Meat Loaf Song!!!

  • Such a wonderful song. I have seen him in concert twice, most recently about 2 years ago and he never disappoints.

  • from the raw power of meat loaf to THAT wtf was that???? im stunned

  • Barry hit #18 in Billboard, 1-7-84. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Shalom, Barry!

  • simply llove this number - takes me back to my hometown, Chatsworth, Durban, South Africa and all our Radio stations - Radio 5, Port Natal, 604 Capital, Radio 702, Cheers South Africa

  • First time I played this at the Radio Station I Dj'd at, I nearly fell off the stool! Still gives me the chills......brilliant rendition...but of course it's Barry! (I'm impatiently waiting for your new album!!)

  • great song and fantastic original video

  • I put this song in the same category as "My Way Or The Highway" by Limp Bizkit.

  • Maybe I'm more familiar with Barry's version, or maybe because I like Barry more than Meatloaf, but I like this song better. This version is in a lower key which I think works better with the song.

  • @marvelboy74 You are so correct. The B flat Major key works much better than the D Major key. It makes the song much more melodically pleasing. Almost 30 years later I still love this song as if I was hearing it for the first time.

  • I remember listening to this song since I was a kid

  • Awesome!

  • Remember the Honest Ed's commercial advertising this album, as well as the Culture Club Colour By Numbers LP?

  • i think the song is one his best tracks

  • Manilow is the best!

  • my favorite ballad ever! i love you barry! brings tears to my eyes everytime.

  • Sorry, But meats version kills this, this is almost as bad as what Donnie Osmond did to Crowded House...As Mr Finn put it "You Can't pick who your children are going to grow up & sleep with"

  • Prince Poppycock?!? Just kidding. I love, LOVE Barry.

But on this particular Jim Stienman song, I gotta go with Meatloaf

  • I've listening to Barry Manilow since 1984, my mother was a great fan!!!!

I wish I learned to play the chords!!!!!

  • Pfft, Meat Loaf, Meat Loaf, Meat Loaf FOREVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Meat Loaf version wayyyyyyyyyy better!!!!!!!!

  • @cwproductions11 It's funny I don't really like Barry Manilow and am a huge Meat loaf fan, but I prefer Manilow's version.

  • @snoopval Hands down this is the best version. A much better key in B flat.. I posted before that I still love this song as much as I did 28 years later. I never tire of listening to it.

  • Love the video and appreciate it on YouTube. Thanks for the post but do not like the song that much though but he did not write it anyway. Love Barry alot and have seen him 18 times all around the US.

  • Meat Loaf's version is MUCH better! More emotions, more feelings...

  • @Koparek100 barry manilow's version is better!

  • I never really took notice of Barry Manilow's former hits or as an artists until I heard this song and watched this video back in '83.

  • The guy wrote some great pop songs...this kind of stuff is missing on the dial today.

  • @castertunes1967 yeah they cant make music like this anymore...the early 80's was the best

  • meatloaf is better

  • One of Manilow's most underrated songs.

  • @CC21560 I think it's not

  • @aniducluan Well, it certainly doesn't get the airplay or is very difficult to get others to play or even remember as some of his other material.

  • @CC21560 Jim steinman wrote so many awesome songs...including this one and a few for Air Supply....Give credit where the credit is due....Jim Steinman wrote it....Barry sang it....and its awesome.

  • @CC21560 It is my fave!

  • Barry took this song and made it his own! I knew this song was deep, even in junior high school. It's music like this that makes me grateful we have the technology and access to goodies such as this one.

  • The leather gloved piano player songs transcends musical styles

  • This is yet another example why Jim Steinman is one of the best songwriters of his generation!

  • @JOSECHETATRIBUTE I agree, As an avid pop music fan and a pop chart historian, Jim Steinman is one of my all time favorite songwriters and producers. I love everything but the kitchen sink production. This song brings me back to 9th grade and 1983 was my favorite year for pop muci in the 80s. Steinman was riding high, with Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" at # 1 and Air Supply's "Making Love out of Nothing at All" at # 2. It is a shame that this only reached # 18.

  • @WARDMAN3 Not to mention "Holding Out For A Hero" and "Nowhere Fast" as well as "Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young" , all underrated songs from 1984.

  • Being in the charts isn't a sign of quality. You just have to look at the rubbish thats always been in it to know that! :D

  • Nowhere near as god as Meat Loaf. Sorry Manilow, you fail!

  • Really? Is that why Manilow charted #1 (AC) and #18 (BB 100) with the song in 1983 whereas Meatloaf FAILED to chart?

  • @techtonikshyft yeah no doubt !! Meat loaf sang it with so much more soul !! makes you cry !!

  • @jizzy310 I thend to agree with you that Meatloaf sang with soul but somehow everytime I listen to Barry sings it kinds of soothing maybe its just me.

  • Jim Steinman has a way to say "I love you" in so many ways, it breaks my heart how he can break mine so easily.

  • Love this song! Thanks so much for posting :)

  • i prefer Meatloaf's version as he is the original singer

  • My favorite Manilow hit!!!

  • what will i do if something ever happens to this great man? i will mourn forever

  • what will i do if something ever happens to this great man? i will mourn forever

  • what will i do if something ever happens to this great man?

  • as a huge Manilow fan let me just say this is my personal best. I just wish there was artists out there that could sing like this today. Thanks for the add...ive played this 4 times already and will play this many more times for sure. 20 thumbs up!!!!!

  • love this version, makes me cry.

  • At 4:45 the tear has moved to the left side of his face!

  • well, Meatloaf was Jim Steinman's baby, but Steinman did well by branching out to other established artists to see what they could do with his dramatic productions. Bonnie Tyler, Barry Manilow, Air Supply, and Barbra Streisand all handled his stuff well, and for me, Barry did a better job with this song than Meatloaf did.

  • this song is amazing

  • You have NO idea how much I love this song.

  • Wow! Never knew he made a music video.... Thanks for posting!

  • i love this song.....beautiful beat.....

  • barry is talented and all, but meatloaf blows him outta the water with this song. barry doesnt have the passion in this song that meat does. say what you will, but i think meatloaf does this 1000x better

  • @MrHIEVERYBODY666 agreed man, barry sounds like a cheesy vegas cover band singer when he does it

  • @werewolfnomore44 but Barry is a cheesy vegas cover band singer!

  • @MrHIEVERYBODY666 Sorry, I'm a Steinman fan, and Meat's vocals on the album version and the few times he did perform it live are bad. He sounds like his vocal chords are having a collective hernia. Maybe if he recorded it in the late 80s it might have been a different story. Give me Manilow's version any day. Just compare the production on the two studio versions alone.

  • I like both versions of the song. Meatloaf's version has more of an angry tone to it. Like he is telling the lover who jilted him off. Barry's is more of a sad wistful version. More like he is pleading with his ex lover....almost like a plea for reason and reflection.

  • PHENOMENAL SONG! Thank you for posting. Easily in my top 100 of all time. Unfortunately, one of the most poignant lines in the final bridge is omitted. "For all the hours we'll be spending alone; for the dreams we'll ignore, and all the promises we promised to keep; they won't be kept anymore"...(for the magic that our bodies have made...)

  • Hit #1 AC, #18 pop in Billboard. Written and coproduced by Jim Steinman. God bless!

  • This was a hit for Barry the week that Jim Steinman had 4 songs in the top 40 the same week, including the number 1 and 2 song. While Jim and Meat Loaf had many good songs and successful records, I don't believe this should have been recorded by Meat Loaf. Barry gave the correct reading IMHO

  • @giffeym Very informative! I actually like both

versions equally, but if I had to vote, I guess

I'd go with Barry! Is it just me, or does Meat

Loaf seem like he's lost his mind? I saw him on

documentary a few years ago, and seemed

extremely weird, not in a good way. I think

    he is a musical genius!!!!

  • @fntime Meatloaf in his day was a genius, but to be honest, I think his pretty exclusive partnership with Jim Steinman hurt him in the long run as I don't believe he came up with a musical vision of his own, just became Jim Steinman's mouthpice. That is only my opinion though

  • no where near as good as meatloaf

  • Thank you very much for posting!!!

    many many stars******************

    wenhsing

  • Barry looks, as my mom would put it, "scrawny" in this video.

  • THIS SONG IS FANTASTIC!!

  • Thanks for posting this song..I'vw been looking for this song for so long.. my cousin played this song all the time back when I was in the 4th grade

  • Who did this one first? Meat Loaf, or Manilow? Because Stieinam has done multiple productions for the both of them, and it has turned out amazing both ways. I know this song is on Meat Loaf's Dead Ringer album, which was only his second album, and it came out in 1981.

  • @fondlist

Meat first - it flopped for him.

  • i have a question, does barry manilow know that you raid his wardrobe?

  • Jim Steinman written and co-produced. Made #18 pop for Barry. Barry's last pop top 40 hit.

  • I remember seeing this video on VH-1 when I was 4 going on 5.
