not to be rude but 2 years isnt a very long life for rats up to 5 years is a long life. If you get your rats from good breeders(Petstores get there rats from breeders that only care for money not the animals) I know a really good rat breeder near me she breeds to make happy, healthy, long living rats. Even rescue is a good option and one hint if you have more rats try to cut back on soy products you give them its belived that soy is not good for them and can possibly cause cancer

hello i know this video was a while ago but i was wondering what cage you had in them now I got the Super Pet Deluxe My First Home Cage For Exotics its kinda expensive I got mine for cheap from my rat Remis foster mom its a nice roomy cage perfect for my two big boys and i was thinking of buying another for my 2 other female rats to be honest the wheel is useles and its a bit of a pain to clean but totaly worth it thought i d give you a heads up =]

This video is old and the cage is for hamsters that I had when I got my two rats, Remy and Emile.Right after this video, I bought a huge cage for them and put several platforms and bars so that they can move around.

It's kind a hard to see but the cage I bought for them is in my other video "My rats are rice lovers".

By the way, they passed away one month ago. They lived 2 years and 8 months which is a long life for rats. I miss them a lot.

A hamster isn't like a rat at all, rats are very different animals. You should do some research first before getting them! Oh and never get them from a pet store, as they're not properly socialized.. Just saying :3

@CatMaster87932 Sure, rats can be amazing and great pets when you get them from a pet store, but usually they're unsocialized, inbred and ill. Females can even be pregnant as stores apparently cannot tell the difference between males and females.

Plus, every time you buy a rat there to 'save it', the petstore can buy five new rats from the money gained.

@CatMaster87932 (Part 2) If rats were kept in big cages (max. 4 rats in 50x80x80 cms cages) with lots of toys and hammocks, were socialized, were taken good care of and if the customers were properly informed, then I would not mind getting rats at a pet store. But truth is, I don't see that happen. Ever. Pet stores shouldn't be selling pets IMO. Just the supplies and toys.

@DutchFolfess Every rat is inbred. Breeders sometimes do it on purpose to make a line stronger. Most pet stores only carry one gender. I'm not saying that they can't be ill or I support animals from pets stores, because I don't. I was just saying any rat can make a great pet, and it can be easy to socialize a shy rat if you're determined and know how.

@CatMaster87932 The rats from ratteries and responsible breeders have a pedigree. They're not just randomly thrown together to produce a litter, but they're selected on personality and health.

Yes, any rat can make a great pet, but you shouldn't support pet stores and those 'farms' by buying animals from a pet store. They should be adopted from shelters or ratteries. Socialization isn't that easy, it usually takes months to socialize a rat bought at a pet store.

It does not usually take months. I know other people who have had their heart rat be from a pet store. The rats I have were rescues, but originally bought at PetSmart. They're the most friendly things i've ever seen with the previous owner doing scare socialization.

To tell you the truth, I didn't really train them to use a sand box for toilet. I just put it there and they started pooping there. However, they rarely pee in a sand box. It would be so much easier if they do both in a sand box.

My rats are toilet-trained.  They use a sand box. I also clean their sand box every morning and wash the cage once a week so they don't stink. I have never had mice before but I have heard mice has stronger smell than rats.

I love many animals and I have had dogs, cats, birds, squirrels, hamsters, etc. It is my first time to have rats and am amazed how smart they are. They come to me and climb onto my shoulders. They become very friendly to people. The are wonderful pets.

The lady said her rat was pregnant so I contacted her and my rats came to my house. They came by airplane!!

you should consider getting him a friend since rats are social creatures. It would also appear you have him in a hamster cage, that is going to be way to small for him. It would also appear you have him on pine (however I could be wrong since I am not seeing the bedding in person) but just in case it is, I HIGHLY recommend you switch because pine (as well as cedar) is toxic to small animals. If you want to stick with wood chippings go with Aspen :3

I only had a hamster cage for the first two weeks and now I have a bigger cage. I put several platforms and houses and toys for them to play.
