Just found out NYC is the safest big city in the U.S..Thank u guliani. P.S. Run for president u got my states 2 electoral votes...maybe u could do NYC to a larger extent and throw EVERYBODY! in jail.
Yea this here that harlem nigga ohboz. i remember when we had those block flooded with cracks and all types of shit.. 1 knows heroin was always the shit in harlem nahmsaying niggs
You look at 68% of New York city today and the"Concrete Jungle" dont really hit with u, but looking at videos like these i can c why this term might apply. I would be be scared to live in these buildings at night. This city is simultaneously the most beautiful and ugliest city there is(Beautiful: i.e the nice parts of the City.
i remember the slums in philly when i was a young kid in the 80's. Of course it wasnt as large as this, but it was just as ugly. there was miles of ruined and burned out buildings all over North and West Philly
@MMA94NYC Obvious huh. I live in the bronx and take the 2 through harlem and i see alot of blacks but also alot of hipsters and yuppies too (black and white). There's a starbucks on 125th plus luxury buildings going up all over manhattan including harlem. It's no where near as run down as it was.
NO CHEMTRAILS, some smog and cloudy days in some pics, but NO CHEMTRAILS. Look at other examples of pre 1990 images of major cities, NO CHEMTRAILS. Dont try to say there were no planes and airport traffic in the 1980's infact they used to run alot of half full flights, they never run half full flights now, NO CHEMTRAILS.
@wusupkaohsiung im a white boy from canada and went to ny last winter, our hotel was on 94th st. we went to harlem for a bit and i can tell you that thanks to gentrification it looks nothing like this now, its actually quite nice and i didnt feel afraid at all. i think ny is supposed to be one of the safest cities in the u.s. now.
Reminds me of my days in Lincoln projects on 135 and Lenox. I came a long way. Helps me remeber were I come from and show my child. I am grateful for my Mom making it out for her girls.
Whoa, I can't imagine how big the NYC is. I can't compare it to any other city, because I've never been to such a large one. I hope some day I'll go there
That's insane. Forget about boarding up doors/windows, some of those actually have brick walls where doors and windows were! I don't think I've ever seen that in any other city.
I want to move to New York City, though I'm probably not going to live in Harlem. Though I do want to visit the apolo (if that place isn't booked till next year by now :P). Although I am African-Canadian African-American culture (basically the same as Canada's) I always kind of avoided. I like genuine African culture rather than "African-American" culture.
@Mythodiir Notice the architecture though. Harlem is totally different, now. Much of it has been redone, and the crowd, which is what made the ghetto, the GHETTO, and what made NY, NY, is gone. Harlem is quite nice, actually. Some of it quite upscale. Old NY is gone. I miss it, the grit and grime, but for a lot of NYers it was too much. And broke many souls.
@hijacker050 Yeah, cause it definitely wasn't the fact the whites shoved all the blacks in NYC up north after slavery ended, and left them there to rot. *rolls eyes* don't be a racist prick. I hate all of the thug (Harlem) chicles but what happened in Harlem only happened because the blacks weren't given much of a chance to begin with (same for much of Africa). Look at Harlem now, it's a lot more up-scale, it still has some of the ghettos, but it's on par now.
What are the name of the Project behind Apollo theater. I went to the Apollo in 93. it was mc lyte, Entro, Swv, lots of comedians, n I saw 3 show tapes n one night. Anyway, when I was n the back, taking pic with the star. There was a high fence,n every car sitting in the project lot was 70, 000 and over...lol.. no comment
i was amazed by the amount of flat rooves there are. biggest cause of damage to a building is when rain cannot run straight off but settles on the flat and will eventually find its own way down to earth. in a city with a lot of rain what were the architects thinking. centuries of shelter building using a pitched or hipped roof totally ignored. to expect people to pay rent to live in some of them is a disgrace to humanity
@HomeOfBritishBoxing these arent slums, these are low cost housing. slums where cleared to make way for skyscrapers. the real new york slums where the ones where ten european immigrants were stuffed in a tenement. same with london.
@paulinotou no trust me, NYC were slums, the "low cost housing" you're referring to were called the projects, you know, where a teenage girl gets her own apartnmetn, has 10 kids, where they were throwing kids off the balconies and babies were in the trash bins and piss in the elevator, um, yeah, they were called teh slums of NYC, the projects, in Harlem (big fucking slum), the bronx, queens, Jersey City, etc. That's why they had to demolish the PROJECTS -slum creators, aka "low cost housing".
@MsMaggieOC i guess your version of a slum is different than mine. i grew passing areas that looked ten times shittier than harlem. tin houses, clothes lines, stray dogs (very very rampant), families of 10 living in a one room house. Bronx and harlem were ghetto as fuck probaly even more dangerous, but not a slum.
@paulinotou Our versions are different here in America. Laws and building codes do not allow for tin houses, rampant stray dogs, etc. Where did you grow up? Because it seems in the western world, the low cost housing projects which turn into slums, like Detroit, the Bronx, certain places in the UK and Canada, they demolish it all before they allow it to get any worse (which they've done).
@MsMaggieOC honestly NY had slums, probaly the worst in world history. but im reffering to the crowded tenements of the immigration age. you ever watch slumdog millionaire or look at the philippines than those are the slums i have in my head.
@paulinotou I know what third world slums you're referring to. But I'm trying to tell you the Western world hasn't been allowed legally to have slums like that in 150 years. The kind of slums we have are the projects and the abandoned, decaying, and dangerous neighborhoods due to white flight, like Detroit.
these bleak images are gonna be coming back to our city sooner than we know it. with the rich getting richer, the erasing of the middle class regardless of race and the frustrations of people in the city and abroad will reach an extreme boiling point. next year's pres. election be smeared with every corrupt trick in the book and it doesn't matter who wins. the average american will still be screwed over. only a matter of time till mass revolutions start sprouting around the country.
Back in the 1980's, you had "homesteaders" who moved into abandoned tenements and fixed them with theiir own bare hands and NO GOVERNMENT MONEY!!!!!!!!!
They were the only thing that stood between Harlem and the wrecking crews. All the government wanted to do was tear down all those beautiful buildings and replace them with housing projects.
I used to live in East Harlem when it was mostly white. We may have been poor, but we kept everything clean and didn't destroy any property. Look at what those people have done to it now.
@dao3rd123 As a Black guy, I hear you. My family came to Harlem from the Caribbean in the early 1900's. West Harlem USED to be the same way. People had dignity in their poverty my Grandma and Mama tell me. Grandmother born in Harlem 1925 and my mother 1945. They say it really didn't get bad until the drugs took root and of course systematic speculation and neglect by the powers that be. East Harlem I heard had a large Italian community amongst other whites I am sure.
wow that sad how you all are talking down on blacks.. white ppl arent any better then us and whites can never be as great as blacks thats why they hate us so much we do everything better.. just for the simple fact that we never had nothing so for us to reach where theyre at we really earned it so who really a man... blacks are that why every white women cheat cuz we even have bigger dicks...HA!
This is one of da most Compelling and riveting songs ive eva heard..and im 19!..i wanna bring dis typa music back..and touch the soul of da inner city
strange to say but i miss the way the city was ... Alot less tourists and the rent was a hell of alot lower . i have a feeling it's gonna be looking like that again real soon with this economy .. thumbs up if you agree .
@718LIGHTUP You hit the nail right on the head brother, But it`s not gonna be just Harlem and the Bronx, Even wealthy white neighborhoods in Queens and long Island are going to look like third world nations when this economy collapses and we have a great depression
@Denmarkpwns Hey Dick sucka ! i actually lived in this and What does being white have to do with it ? you probably still live with your parents you little fag . Only the strong survived through these times , I say it's better cause this city is rediculously expenisive and too many rich yuppie cock suckers taking over .
It definitely changed a lot. But they still have to do major improvements on the upper east side of Harlem. For example by 132 and park it is bad there. Transvestite prostitutes all the time, someone pisses in the elevators every day, it smells like shit, crackheads everywhere, it is just horrible. But I have also met a lot of intelligent people out there.
@eurolove06 I walk down these mean streets when i was a teen i had to walk right by there everyday back in the 60's to go to school but back then it was alright by the time the 80's came around we had move down to el barrio in my 59 years i have seen Harlem make great change over the years i use to live right there on park ave and 132nd st the projects.
yea prime realestate now whichis making taxes go up and the poor havingto struggle more to pay rent.I wish we lived in the past nyc is safer but its whack nyc is not a fun anymore. its boring and expensive.
Check out the teaser trailer to the new show coming out called "UPTOWN" about Washington Heights in the 80's. You want the real truth? Well now you will get your chance to see it all. Type in Uptown Teaser in the search box. Also visit uptownseries(dot)com
Funny how montages like this bring out the racists on both sides of the aisle. I was born long after the race riots of the 60's so I don't have a bone in this fight, and frankly I don't give a shit about the past. The 1960's race riots were black revenge for white racism. Both sides were wrong, and these images are the result of those wrongs. Learn from the past, stop finger pointing, let go of hate, and move forward.
"let go of hate" That makes no sense, everyone hates something. By the way it was Khazarian Jews who brought Blacks to the USA, not Whites. Go to google and type in: the secret relationship between blacks and jews
I don`t think there`s anymore ghettos left in NYC.. Even in Brooklyn they cleaned up most of the slums.. Red hook used to be one of the worst projects in the city back in the 80`s and now it`s like a country club filled with yuppies.. Willamsburg is the same way.. Brownsville is still rough though
My God! Glad it's not like that anymore! Nothing but white men with babies strapped to their chests and white women jogging all over the place now. Shame blacks let this gem of a place go and Kudos to all the people who brought property at close to nothing back then. Now, townhouses and brownstones in Harlem fetch over a Millon!
Come to Florida, now a lot of the " hood areas are starting to look like this, burned out houses, abandon houses, crack houses, its all fucked up around here.
@Killinemdead1 yes sir! brownstones going for a cool 2 million! however this also means gentrification... harlem, especially west harlem... but east is not far behind - hopefully a nice balance can be achieved but when has that ever happened.
I hate reading all this shit about blacks did this and whites are responsible for that.
I'd blame the government. They spent money that they couldn't pay back and when the city fell apart they were doing nothing about it. No wonder it caused slum conditions.
@emmab310 You are right, it did not have anything to do with color. The fact is, the city ran out of money and at the same time, the city forced rent control on landlords. eventually the rent controlled rents ran lower than the total expenses to operate the building (Heat, Water, Taxes, Mantenance and Insurance). It left the landlord with 2 choices, most gave the keys of the building to the city and some bad owners, torched their buildings for insurance
@dnlcast2 Yeah black people are monkeys and apes and never did shit for humanity? Get outta here you dumb ass fuck! It's 2011 and your dumbass is still on that racism shit. Listen you devil EVERYBODY has to live together. I'm not black but I know WHITE people FUCKED black people over from slavery but black people have invented and done alot of things. Hell truth be told what I just learned in my Anthropology class is that black people are the first human beings. So just go die already! SMH!
i read that alongside redlining a lot of financial disparity was further worsened by black flight after WW2 is that true?
im jamaican canadian but the racism in the states just kinda blows me away when i would read about it so i try and educate myself on this different post-slavery experience
Instead of cherishing the hood and the one mile radius of street blocks...get ur money up and get the fuck out the hood. The whites stole this land and then made slavery into poverty...putting poison into our peoples veins, brainwashing our people, and letting drugs, diseases and other shit fuck up our humanity! FUCK THE ELITE!!!
@bonesaw08 This video is a cautionary tale of what live in Harlem looked like during these times. I am a white person and I live in a Bronx neighborhood that is considered bad. Instead of choking on force-fed white power bullshit open a book and enlighten yourself and try to help your fellow man. This is why some black people gave me a hard time growing up in "the ghetto" racist clowns like yourself.
@bonesaw08 Its a well known fact that racist people are not very happy with themsevles. I'm pretty sure that at some point in ur life, an AFRICAN AMERICAN either stole your lunch money when u were a kid. OR u probably got raped by your black step father. I can bet u my life that u wouldnt come to Harlem yelling the word "NIGGER" around.
@noreaga12326 i bet you won't go to the georgia hill yelling whiteboy cracka. i have fought greasy niggers and beat them badly. i don't fear animals one on one
@bonesaw08 the difference between u and me is that although im not white, i treat people the way they deserve to be treated. in every race, theres always gona be a bad apple. i'm not racist. YOU are the one whos calling blacks "NIGGERS" I'm sure at 1 point in your life, a black man either robbed u or whooped that ass. Its pretty easy to brag about whipping somebody's ass on a utube video huh?u saying that proves that in real life ur a CHUMP. Please come to harlem and yell out "NIGGER" i dare u
@noreaga12326 I agree bro these cats get on youtube, and say nigger this, nigger that, and I know for a fact 99% of these cowards would piss their pants if you yelled at them or even look at them wrong.
@bonesaw08 I bet you start shit with people, then turn around call the cops, and act like your a victim. I know you are a coward who hides behind his computer screen. In all actuality you are envious of the black man but you can on dream. I bet your favorite athlete is black, I bet your favorite movies are black movies, I bet you loved the Rock from wwe, I bet you just love how black women are shaped. You see that in which you hate, is really what you love.
@bonesaw08 and you like dick in your ass fuck boy. you better leave well enough alone bitch before I find out your ip address and pay you a little visit mutha fucka, I will smash your faggot ass, fucking coward.
@allbiznessboxing oh ya, i bet you will suck enough dick to hitchhike up here. i'll take you in the woods and lumberjack fuck your mouth you little fish bitch.
Damn Harlems changed! it's so nice nowadays :)

strange to say but i miss the way the city was ... Alot less tourists and the rent was a hell of alot lower . i have a feeling it's gonna be looking like that again real soon with this economy .. thumbs up if you agree .
718LIGHTUP 4 months ago 39
@718LIGHTUP You hit the nail right on the head brother, But it`s not gonna be just Harlem and the Bronx, Even wealthy white neighborhoods in Queens and long Island are going to look like third world nations when this economy collapses and we have a great depression

clueless prick.
sure the modern films make it look amazing, but fact is, it wasnt better than now, and people always look back and say it was better.

But I have also met a lot of intelligent people out there.
eurolove06 5 months ago
@eurolove06 I walk down these mean streets when i was a teen i had to walk right by there everyday back in the 60's to go to school but back then it was alright by the time the 80's came around we had move down to el barrio in my 59 years i have seen Harlem make great change over the years i use to live right there on park ave and 132nd st the projects.

Back in the day. Nothin' said Harlem like walking down central harlem 7th avenue. Today nothing says Harlem...

Why were those abandoned buildings not torn down? It seems like there were all these empty, burned-out tenements in Harlem.
Then again, if they'd been torn down, they'd have been replaced by those nasty housing projects that bring even more trouble.

Great montage. Love the song too. "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" by Marvin Gaye would also be fitting.
jadedmastermind 5 months ago
Funny how montages like this bring out the racists on both sides of the aisle. I was born long after the race riots of the 60's so I don't have a bone in this fight, and frankly I don't give a shit about the past. The 1960's race riots were black revenge for white racism. Both sides were wrong, and these images are the result of those wrongs. Learn from the past, stop finger pointing, let go of hate, and move forward.

"let go of hate" That makes no sense, everyone hates something. By the way it was Khazarian Jews who brought Blacks to the USA, not Whites. Go to google and type in: the secret relationship between blacks and jews
starman380 2 months ago
@jadedmastermind No. Both sides weren't wrong. You are like most whites. You close your eyes to the repercussions of past decisions.

Goldenchild795 6 months ago
@Goldenchild795 There's a LOT less ghettos than 20-30 years ago, but I think East New York and South Jamaica still have patches that look like this.

DjDedan 6 months ago
I hate reading all this shit about blacks did this and whites are responsible for that.
I'd blame the government. They spent money that they couldn't pay back and when the city fell apart they were doing nothing about it. No wonder it caused slum conditions.

There is a lot of run down areas all over the world in large cities it has nothing to do with the color of people who live these areas.
emmab310 7 months ago
@emmab310 You are right, it did not have anything to do with color. The fact is, the city ran out of money and at the same time, the city forced rent control on landlords. eventually the rent controlled rents ran lower than the total expenses to operate the building (Heat, Water, Taxes, Mantenance and Insurance). It left the landlord with 2 choices, most gave the keys of the building to the city and some bad owners, torched their buildings for insurance

I'm pretty sure that at some point in ur life, an AFRICAN AMERICAN either stole your lunch money when u were a kid. OR u probably got raped by your black step father. I can bet u my life that u wouldnt come to Harlem yelling the word "NIGGER" around.

Please come to harlem and yell out "NIGGER" i dare u
noreaga12326 6 months ago
@noreaga12326 I agree bro these cats get on youtube, and say nigger this, nigger that, and I know for a fact 99% of these cowards would piss their pants if you yelled at them or even look at them wrong.
