For the original black forest cake, you would use a filling made from sour cherries, sugar, cherry juice and starch. Traditionally, you would also moisten each layer of cake with some cherry schnapps before adding the whipped cream and cherries.
I wanted to let you know that I made this cake for thanksgiving it was a last minute decision because I had surprise guests, so I used a boxed chocolate cake mix for the cake but it was stunning! Thank Betty!
betty or anyone: when u say heavy whipping cream and powder sugar and whip it-can't u use whip cream? and instead of cherries do u think i could use strawberries?
@PointingTheWeigh Hi Linda! It is so nice to hear from you! Thanks for your sweet comment. Thanks also for supporting bettyskitchen by purchasing the cookbooks; I hope you enjoy them!
That cake is simply delicious looking. If I might suggest it, next time try using a piping bag and large shell tip to pipe a border of whipped creme around the top, then chill the cake, then add the cherry topping before serving. I think it would be a nice finishing touch.
I also wonder how the cake would hold up to a chocolate ganache.
Thanks Betty! I like to make this cake a little more rustic. I do not frost the sides of the cake, but rather let the filling show and sort of ooze out a bit if it wants to. It looks a bit like an old southern stack cake and, having all the same ingredients as your Black Forest Cake, is just as delicious! Just my take on a classic. Thanks for the upload.
This i had to see, to see if its like the Black Forest Cake that my german boss used to make but its a li'l different,...for starters he didn't put any crumbs, just the sliced cake, 2 slices of yellow cake, 2 slices of chocolate alternating them, cherry filling between each slice and the whipping cream covering all the cake, but no crumbs, just some chocolate syrup lines on top and on the sides with some maraschino cherries on top,..but truth be told i like your version way better!! = )
Hey Betty, I was just wondering how does the whipped cream hold up in the fridge? Every time I make it, and keep in the fridge it tends to lose its shape, I have tried using some powder gelatin dissolved in water but I don't like the texture the gelatin creates. I was wondering if you have any tips? Thanks so much!
@MissAngie8787 My whipped cream held up fine. I think the confectioner's sugar stiffens it a little bit, but most of all, you have to beat it until it if stiff (but, don't over-beat).
8:52 I actually quite like watching you do your thing, Ms. Betty. If the video was of you detailing *every* layer of the Black Forest Cake, I still would've watched the entire video. I just love your charisma; not a single boring second, even though your videos are relatively "quiet". Keep it up! I haven't finished watching the video yet; looking good so far!
Hi Betty, This is perfect! I'm going to make this for my mom's birthday! Can we use cake flour? :3 I'm always so confused over what kind of flour to use lol
Betty, I love your videos! But I am dying to know, what do you do with all of the food after you make it? Do you eat it? Do you give it away? All of your recipes look amazing!
I am very new to You Tube and was introduced to your blog via a link left on mine :-) Batty, I have watched several of your videos and just LOVE them! I wish I could come and visit your Southern kitchen, you have such a wonderful way about you. Anyways, new fan here!
Wow you have come a long way in two years. I was wondering if you would recomend any substitute for the cherries. I ask because I am alergic. Thanks :)
This looks amazing Betty! I was wondering if you had any plain ol' cornbread recipes? I wanted to make it for my family this Thanksgiving and couldn't find any when I tried searching. Thanks for all your videos and time!
@chiuchiutrain92 Yes, I have several recipes for cornbread, corn muffins, corn sticks, corn pudding, spoon bread, etc. Just search in bettyskitchen for cornbread or corn bread.
Betty this looks beautiful! I made this once and because we have such high humidity the topping stayed runny and drippy. Maybe cornstarch would help? Have you ever tried to thicken the cherry topping and if so what did you use? Maybe there is a better thicker brand of filling to use? I'd like to make one for Christmas but I'm nervous about the presentation. Many thanks Betty!
@jcrefasi1 I just used a store brand (Meijer). If yours needs to be thicker, you can put some cornstarch in cold water and add it to the pie filling. You will need to heat it until it bubbles and the cornstarch gets cooked.
That is a great tip with the four skewers - I have had a cake or two slide in my time especially when you go to cut it which doesn't look good upon presentation. The cake looks delicious :)
I feel like it's Christmas morning. I logged on and presto all these new amazing looking videos. Thank you so much Betty. I was looking through your videos from last year , for ideas for this year, what great videos and suggestions. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to watch about 25 of your videos. Thank you very much, sincerely, Diana
We were invited to a neighborhood Chirstmas party next month, and they asked me to bring a cake. This one is perfect! What a pretty cake. Looks like a bakery made it. (my poor diet) ;) xx
