Im reading the book, The Flags of our Fathers and it talks about the Marines who raised the flag and who they were before the war. Ira was a very quiet man, but reliable. The only survivors of the people who had raised the notorious replacement flag(the famous picture replacated and modeled into statues) were Ira Hayes and Jack "Doc" Bradly. Flags of our Fathers is a great read

His most incredible accomplishment was zapping an NVA officer with a single round from a specially modified Browning M2 from a range of 2500 yards (1.2 miles)! Pretty soon no one wanted to carry the plate, and of course, no mortar plate, no mortar! There'll never be another like him.

The VC didn't drop the weapon; therefore, was shot dead. The incident dinging the NVA officer was in the Elephant Valley. Cpl. Burke, later postumously awarded the Navy Cross, was with him. Save a NVA Sgt., Hathcock and Burke took out the entire enemy company.
