@rfilho40 The Brave Series, which Gaogaigar is the last of ,was made by Takara and Sunrise who did the Transformers. It's really a spiritual successor to them. That's why they all have a transformer like look to all of them.
Come on Media Blasters, keep dubbing this. This was Dan Green at his best. The only reasons it did so poorly is because you advertised it only in your Voltron DvDs and the narrator mispronounced GaoGaoGar, causing an up-rage with the weeaboos. If this was aired on Adult Swim right now, I'm willing to bet it would make a killing.
problem with the series is it almost gets too "dull monster of the week" although the first 20 episodes or so really just introduce all the characters and robots and their support items, in time for the showdown against E.I.01 which is definitely the most bad ass showdown in the series (before king j-der shows up of course)
gurren laggan was great and hhave crazy spiral power and gaogair was the awesome but one thing that gurren laggan cant match is when guy get really piss he rips people apart
I dunno, choosing between Gurren Lagann and GaoGaiGar is like choosing between Funnel Cake and Glazed Doughnuts--they're BOTH good. Can't we just like them both?
I don't really care about the real robo/Super Robo divide. Valkyries are about as awesome as Gunbuster to me. Which is why Super Robot Taisen is so awesome--it puts 'em both together! ^_^
All right, basically what I'm saying is calling GaoGaiGar the king of all super robots, is like saying Optimus Prime is their god. Comments like that will very likely cause arguments amongst super robots fans. In reality there is no real top robot, as there are so many, and many fans will have different opinions, thus the matter will forever be inconclusive, nuff said!
And as mentioned, Giant Robots is a genre. Two of them in fact.
Super Robots are like GaoGaiGar, Voltron, and Mazinger. Basically, they're superheroes rendered into hundred-foot-tall mecha. Lots of monsters, Hot Blood, and sexual molestation of the laws of physics.
Real Robots, like Gundam, Macross, and Battletech, are more like Military Hardware than characters in their own right.
AGAIN, I'm aware of the differences and as I mentioned (but nobody bothered to look up) they are of the same genre, but they are UNRELATED in terms of storyline, corporate origins etc. Media Blasters just wanted to compare them to sell DVD's, which is rather a cheap way of doing it, seeing as though Voltron isen't related to Yuusha at all!
The series didn't sell as well as it hoped that's why only half the series was dubbed. You can aquire ALL the episodes on DVD in original Japanese with English subtitles by Media Blasters
Man I wish the anime distributers here in Australia would hurry up and release GaoGaiGar here. I am Fucking dying to see this. I just love the whole Giant Robots genre. Except Voltron I would rather watch them in there original japanese forms GoLion and Dairugger XV.
Though I think Voltron's value is mainly in nostalgia, which GoLion and Dairugger XV don't have. Objectively speaking, I don't think they were such great shows.
That's fair enough. Overall I don't like the idea (even for promotion) that tries to say that one robot is better then the other, it would just start arguments that shouldn't be. A lot of people will have their favourite Super Robot show, but a lot of people are different, so results will always vary.
I still see GaoGaiGar as the best representation of a super robot anime we have seen so far. Gurren Lagann is great, but GaoGaiGar stick closer to the core of the genre and surpass all other shows in all areas. Gurren Lagann is a great modern take on the genre, but actually tries to hard in some areas and it flaws the series. Simons resolution halfway through don't make much sense and there are other things as well, but I wont go into detail.
No, it was not relevant. It was fo lulz. But my initial point remains true - not everyone can have such a detailed memory of the entire super-robot sub-genre that you do. Both Voltron and GGG are light-hearted series which feature giant, combining mecha which whup ass to save the world. From a laymen's perspective, that' close enough to compare.
BTW - I'm not too much of a Gurren fan - gimme RahXephon, please! ;)
If you had done your reaserch, both GaoGaiGar and Voltron were both completily different series and by two completily different animation studios GaoGaiGar is by Sunrise, Voltron (or rather GoLIon and Dairugger XV) was by Toei. It looked like Media Busters was trying to unite the two together, yes they are from the same genre, but they are both unrelated series in terms of origins etc.
Yes, but this is not relevant to what the trailer was saying. If one refers to GaoGaiGar as the "king" of giant robots, then it is king over them all, regardless of studio of origin. Voltron was only named specifically because it was what exposed America to the genre. That's all the trailer was saying.
And what about Transformers huh? Or even better Gobots, in Japan they are classified as 'Super Robots'. The Japanese treat several unrelated shows as an entire genre and saying one robot was better then the others, is sure to cause arguments amongst the fans. Anymedia Media Blasters only really mentioned Voltron as they were trying to get those DVD's sold, I don't think they really know their anime that well!
And it begins! I'm just saying that Gobots or rather MACHINE ROBO as they are orginally known in Japan are classified as super robots because they can transform!
I was hoping that they would bring in King Exkaiser or Da Garn next but it highly seems unlikely that they'll ever think about it see how GGG failed to do so.*cries in a corner*
I'munsure if it's still in progress, but I heard that Raijinoh was comissioned for a US release. It's an Eldran show, but the Eldran series has been since intergrated into Yuusha because of it's simularities with the franchise, that and the two toy companies Takara (Yuusha) and Tomy (Eldran) just so happend to merge together recentily. So you should be able to enjoy Raijinoh, if it's still planned to be released on DVD.
Sunrise seems to hold them in high regard like GaoGaiGar as they include both of them in a couple of video games recentily like Brave Wars and Battle of Sunrise.
"Piloted superpowered robots," as begun by Mazinger Z, IS a genre. And Voltron was America's FIRST exposure to it. Even if GoBots qualifies, it started over here about a month after Voltron did. That's all. This is about chronology.
And I'm quite familiar with Mazinger, Getter Robo, the "Real Robot" branch started by Gundam and developed further by Macross, and all the rest. And I know about how Mazinger itself was just Go Nagai's variation on Tetsujin 28-go.
First....FIRST! Ever heard of Shogun Warriors? That came earlier before Voltron. Look saying GaoGaiGar is the king of all super robots is exagurating! Yes GaoGaiGar is an awsome robot and the King of Braves, but no robot is superior to the other, it's all fiction.
I'd assume Shogun Warriors wasn't counted because those robots were only introduced as a toyline.
The "King of Super Robots" thing is pretty clearly an advertising tagline based on the "Yuusha-Oh" title. Relax, I don't think they've got anything against Eva or Giant Robo or Raideen or any of the rest.
As I mentioned, Media Blasters may distribute anime, but know very little about themselves, so yeah, that and they were trying to sell Voltron disks at the same time (these two robots do have lion motiffs, so some poor sod probably thought they were related). Shogun Warriors did uterlise many Super Robots from Japan and Jim Terry's Force Five series was meant to act as an English language version of several anime series to promote it. Overall it was an American creation, that even used Godzilla.
You were the one who brought up Shogun Warriors. And the trailer is perfectly explainable without thinking Voltron and GGG are related other than through genre. I just walked you through it. It makes perfect sense to me even assuming it was made by someone who knows everything I do about mecha anime.
I was only explaining that Shogun Warriors did have a cartoon (or ra\ther a dubbed anime) to promote it, they even had their own comic book. Overall there had been something before Voltron was dubbed, that introduced people to Japanese Super Robots, that's all. In fact I won't be surprised if Shogun Warriors helped to introduce Voltron and the popularity of robots in America.
Ahh...so your chief objection is that Force Five was aired before Voltron? Okay, legitimate objection there. Though arguably, Voltron established the genre much more firmly than F5 had. I don't know any actual figures, but I'm pretty sure Voltron was more successful. Like how Pac-Land did side-scrolling platform action before Super Mario Bros.
I think that it was aired before Voltron, but you're probably right to say that Vopltron sold better then Shogun warriors (neither appeared in the UK so I'm unsure about toy sales) however Transformers arrived in 1984 as well, so chances are although it may have aired first, Voltron would soon lose out to Transformers in terms of popularity, or they were both equal, as I mentioned I'm not 100% sure.
Transformers and Voltron started right around the same time. It was before I was born, but I understand that Voltron was a big hit -- it's just that Transformers was even bigger. Regardless, in the public consciousness, "independent giant robots" and "piloted giant robots" are distinct. (And how many of the former do you see these days in anime?)
Of course, this conversation was originally about GaoGaiGar, second cousin to Transformers, with a cast half comprised of ersatz Autobots. :P
You could say some of these guys were the prototypes for the Superlink Autobots. :) But Yuusha also has some Gundam in there too, since both their mecha designs were done by the same person and the same animation studio. :) I think there is a nice mix between piloted and non-piloted robots in anime.
David, the shogun warriors didn't really exist, it was a label for a various collection of giant mecha, and even godzilla was introduced as a shogun warrior in the toyline. There was a short-lived marvel comic book that tried to run with it, but it wasn't really on the level of Voltron, where they adapted an entire existing work.
What he means is that Shogun Warriors was a patchwork brand, made up of several different series (The comic was Combattler V, Raideen, and Dangard Ace, for example), rather than a singular series.
The animated series you might thing thinking of was actually Force Five, which included Stavengers (Getter Robo G) and I think Grendizer.
I'm FULLY aware of what it is, the moron was implying that it didn't exsistr, but it did! Yes it was a mix and match of other ideas, but it was a toyline AND short lived comic and five of Toei's series were dubbed to promote the toys.
Voltron brought super robots to America, now 'their king' has arrived?! Honestily that couldn't be any more WRONG! Voltron and GaoGaiGar are not related, true they are both Super Robots but both have come from different universies, companies etc. I bet Media Busters only mentioned it because they were also distributing that show at the same time!
Not everyone can has the same epicness quotient as true Super RObot fans. Although I'd argue that the true king of Super RObot series remains Gurren Lagann. C'mon, it has the bitchen glasses. That's all you need!
This show is a legendary win, but MediaBlasters sucks at marketing it. I saw a DVD of GaoGaiGar 1 at Fanime for $40...wtf, I only brought fifteen and I was hoping it would be twenty at most, but forty? For the first episodes that sucked? GGG isn't OH MY GOD epic until the late twenties I hear and I agree...but to kill the dub is a MAJOR FAIL since it was really entertaining.
Maybe MediaBlasters should have 4Kids air it on their TV slot so kids can enjoy it too.
True. This should be shown on Toonami. They're generally good about not destroying shows, even if they are limited by standard censoring issues.
Although the show's definitely great from the very first episodes, $40 is definitely much. And that's for what, three to four episodes? If you want to watch the whole series, that's $520 right there.
@tet64 If 4kids get a hold of any more animes im gonna kill THEM! They already messed up plenty. One piece barely survived and Tokyo Mew Mew got name r@ped.
And maybe we don't like 4kids because they do a shitty job with unnecessary edits and changes, bad voice acting, terrible script writing that insults peoples intelligence and kiddyfying shows that are never meant for children.
And, sorry to burst your bubble, but Princess Mononoke (released at the same time as Pokémon) and Spirited Away did more to legitimize Anime in North America than Pokémon ever did (Hayao Miyazaki FTW).
@tet64 quite teh contrary, 4kids is just for exposure. Many of the fans instantly rush to the original version... all it does is get the word out. There's quite an audience that will love to see a show just like this but don't know about it.

@tet64
Because Pokemon didn't influence people to know about or watch anime.

@Darkfortune629

@tet64 The second I saw your post and looked at what other people were saying, I'm gonna have to say.
Listen to this man, he knows what he is saying.

@tet64 quite teh contrary, 4kids is just for exposure. Many of the fans instantly rush to the original version... all it does is get the word out. There's quite an audience that will love to see a show just like this but don't know about it.

Agreed, but it not so bad that I couldn't watch it
Overall I like the dub, and I do plan on watching the whole thing dubbed at least once

I'll watch the dub eventually..
Speaking of which, hows Pizza/J's voice?
... and Penchinon?
HitomKoneko 4 years ago
Pizza/J's voice is pretty good but Penchinon is annoying as crap

UPDATE!!
Just bought Volume 2 not long ago, and as I thought, once the VAs start settling into their roles they're pretty solid
Complaints:
Still says GaoGaiGRR
Volfogg = Volfoe? Not to sure, might be the proper version of saying it...
ChoRyuJins voice is a tad gratting

That's great and all but I realy want to know two things, how good it looks compared to the Fansubs and how the dub voice track is.

Overall Id say the dub is pretty decent-good. THey actually got someone to pull off a pretty good Guy
