@litojonny it is a very long, bumpy and bloody road if you want to be an actuary. but it is well well worthy. most insurance top managements were "Actuary". you need to go to school and get a degree in actuarial science and pass a bunch of very very very hard exams, as mentioned in the vid, it consumed your life. but you don't need to worry about getting a job(relatively easier than other business majors) and pay. the degree doesnt matter the most but the exams. most school prepared you for the
lower level exams and the same time get your courses done for the degree. overall, it is well worthy in terms of pay, status (in the company) if you are really deticated and into it.
I LOVE Math, majored in Math, and I HATED my wasted decade as an actuary. If you really love Math, you will NOT dig a career as an actuary. There is interesting math on the early exams, but after that it is mostly finance and economics. Despite the promotional efforts from the SOA, you hardly ever use mathematics on the job as an actuary. And that is the truth.
Be a teacher or professor if you really love math!
@Darnellius If you're interested in investments, why waste your time as an actuary? Keeping your job as an actuarial student will require dedicating all of your out-of-work time to studying crap you don't need to know as an investment expert. I'd say make yourself an expert in investments and show somebody evidence of your knowledge. Write some articles, start a blog, something like that....
@MelTurpin Being an actuary's definitely not for everybody, but there is at least one counter-example to your statement: me. I really love math (B.S. and M.S. in Mathematics), and I DO dig my career as an actuary :).
I should have done this earlier, but I need to give credit to "The What Is An Actuary Song" by mushyfung for the bird joke. I loved it so much, I just had to pay homage to it.
@arlihama I see...do you recommend it? It is a pretty neat profession, challenging, and of course, rewarding. I personally love math, and am pretty much excelling at it in high school, which I know is very different from the professional uni math, but should I use this in regard to study for an actuary? I dont know..
@IllxllI It's far from the math you are aware of. So I honestly recommend you be a mathematician instead; there are a lot of jobs for mathematicians, especially if you take specializations. There are specializations in Business Applications and Computer Applications, and other fields even outside mere education. Research. But I think you should strongly consider Actuarial Sciences. :) I'm honestly falling in love with my degree program. ♥

If you have panic attacks and cry, its time to find a different profession. Maybe one that will make more of a difference in the world.

Just a question, if you took Actuarial Science as a course in the University, is it easy to change course/career?
DumMeister 8 months ago
@DumMeister as long as it's a math course still probably not

I don't mean to be rude or anything of the sort, but what is the point or moral of this video? What should anyone, and of which group take from this?
Muzikologa 8 months ago
@Muzikologa its hilarious and sooooo true of the life/ conversations of most actuarial students.

@MelTurpin Sounds great. I majored in Economics with Maths. Do you know how difficult it is to move to the investment side of the business.
