  • can't wait till my high school gets this song down. its very nice.

  • R.I.P. Neal Hefti! we miss you! :(

  • I just closed my eyes and played all the fingerings for the trumpet part for the whole song. That was the most relaxing thing I've experienced in awhile.

  • Eom sampled kurt ellings versions of this song which has the vocals!

  • mute noobs

  • Props to Neil Hefti and EOM

  • I played the trumpet solo in this song at our local jazz night. I rocked it and had half of the high school ensemble congratulating me for playing it so well :D the other half were jealous of how well I played it (;

  • @bruteshot473 Dude! I also totally played the trumpet solo in this song for our high school jazz band! This would have been '74-''75 or so. And yes -- they also worshipped me. Maybe just a little. I didn't use a mute either. And after the solo I smashed my trumpet on the ground. Okay, I made up that last part. Still...

  • @bruteshot473 just like a trumpet player to be cocky...

  • @tikwonjon Why do you have to hate? I played it in eighth grade and I made it (with a TON of preparation) into the top band in my high school against 7 juniors and 8 seniors with only 5 spots open, I'm a freshman. I only got 2nd but that's to be expected, I also made lead trumpet in District 8 Jazz in our state. I'm also going to allstate and taking lead there too. I practice 30 hours a week with private lessons on Monday Wednesday and Friday. I work hard and still manage to get a 4.0 GPA. SKILL

  • @bruteshot473 hey bud, not hatin. just the nature of trumpet players. we all gotta be cocky or else we'd play french horn or something. ; ) I , for example, made both midstate and allstate jazz the first year (we start trying out as sophomores). Plus varsity on a top in state ranked cross country team, class officer, and a 4.0 GPA. Keep up the work, freshmen, and keep well rounded. that's important.

  • This is Neal Hefti's band? It's not Basie cause the piano player is playing too much.

  • @ScShivers Can nobody making a good point without resorting to bad language.

    No. they cannot.

  • Nice. Just kicking back in the patio with a Double Scotch on the Rocks and a smoke. Good music

  • whats the name of the band performing this specific recording?

  • /watch?v=0gTzt3srUto

    Wax - Don't Need

  • Thumbs up if Wax sent you :)

  • @MMShns I'm a jazz musician and was floored when I heard EOM and Wax sampling this, its tasteful use of artistically valuable music. I wish more rap and hip hop artists would take notice of this.

  • @MFhorn06 Indeed.

  • @MFhorn06 I know, right? now all you hear are mainstream artists sampling of each other.... it gets so boring.

  • @MMShns well i give most of the credit to EOM. I mean he is the one who used to sample to produce the beat :) but wax is still awesome

  • I won in competition playing this song in 5th grade, 5 years ago. :)

  • Thank you for posting. Great recording, classic song.

  • Premier beat this joint up!

  • @trumpetboli what age range are you? Because my middle school band is playing this at our spring concert and I have the solo, it's definitely worth listening to this recording. But change the rhythms a bit so it's your solo and not Neal's

  • thanks this will help me with my trumpet soloo..

  • I like it! I prefer Basie's though, the tempo bothers me because the speed, or lack thereof, of Basie's was one of my favorite things.

  • @bassman071 You think that the tempo is inapt?! Then check out guitarist Julian Lage for some seriously mad arrangement of this tune : ))). Cheers!

  • @yorikthepoor I shall :]

  • ; Thank You For Posting The Best Version Of This Tune, and I'm having too much fun with the blow-zilla button.

    Cheers!

  • So slow yet so JAZZY

  • nice music

  • having listened to this and the Count Basie version i would say this is my favourite. Basie's is more 'pure' jazz, but this, I think, nails it. Sublime.

  • From the 'Jazz Pops' album of 1962 ?

I'm creating music playlists for each of the last 100 years. Take a step back in time and play one, you might be surprised! It's time travel by music ! ! !

  • es geht noch besser Hefti +Basie!!!

  • Don't Dream Of Anybody But Me.

  • Neal Hefti ist zum heulen, einfach großartig!!...und zum zuhören!!!!

  • Agreed. Wanted more of his stuff.

  • I love this piece, but I think they played it a little fast.

  • sech, I think this is an original Count Basie variation of Hefti's tune. Basie has played it slower. Funny you say it's too fast. Just listened to a Lalo Shifrin interpretation from the film Rush Hour here on YouTube, and someone commented it was too fast. It's certainly got a faster tempo than this, but it works for me.

  • Our Jazz Band has this same song!

    Palm Springs Jazz Band rules...

  • Hey, will look for your band on the net. Get some more Hefti into your repertoire He was not nearly as prolific as someone like Henry Mancini, but what he got out there was beautiful stuff. Check out the soundtracks from Harlow and How to Murder Your Wife.

  • Although I hate the title of the movie 'How To Murder Your Wife' it IS a satire, no one gets murdured, and the soundtrack by Neil Hefti is EXQUISITE! I absolutely LUV it! Glad u mentioned it!

  • Oh, and it is a great movie, too!

  • Can you give me some feedback on if your jazz band would get a kick out of playing from the original scores of Ray Conniff ? I'll send you a playlist.

  • We play this tune all the time in my jazz band class.....its sounds a bit better when you slow it down. But this is still a beautiful arrangement

  • This is Neal Hefti, what is there to say?

  • I too heard this on an episode of In Plain Sight and flashed back to playing it in concert band! I really liked this song. Our band instructor in Springfield, OH was Hap Ashenfelter and he introduced us to Neal Hefti. Hefti was great!!

  • Neil Hefti was a genius.

  • @imonthebox Totally agree - his music is wonderful and inspired.

  • why is everyone giving thumbs down no reason O.o just listen to the music geez....

  • great memories... we called it stage band back in the day. it's a great piece for student bands. great chords that gets 'em to listen to each other. this tune was used on an episode of "In Plain Sight". Hadn't heard it in years. took a while for the little guys up there to find the name. I didn't remember Hefti though, thought it was Nestico. GREAT SONG

  • i also play this in jazz band and I play the trumpet solo...but i don't think i'm swinging it hard enough but I've been working on it

  • Same! I swing it some, but I focus more on just adding little things to it, like playing a little different rhythm and sliding up to some notes. Just add small things like that and people will love it!

  • Comment removed

  • yeah but sometimes the easiest things can be the most appreciated

  • this is a pretty gud piece, and its easy.

im a tennor player and yeah, its really easy.

  • THE BEST SONG EVER. I tottlally had my band and I play this for my dad and his wife. she loved it

  • Music does not get better than this.

  • No kidding.

    <3

  • Wow!! I attend Lane Tech College Prep. The jazz band played this song. It was a great piece and now i love it!! I am an alto sax player. Check out the Lane Tech Band.

  • This is Neal's orchestra. That's him playing the trumpet solo!!!

  • its just the written bridge, not a real solo solo

  • "Solo" means; ONE. Neal 's was the only instrument that was playing the bridge. There are bridges, choruses, tacets, codas, etc., in ALL music.

  • I vomit upon your inconsistent knwoledge of jazz, valvetron.

  • Do you mean he is playing the "solo" part written at the bridge?

  • cannot get enough..as good as it gets!

  • I LOVE Lil Darlin - period. But, this is a bit faster than the original Count Basie version most of us are familiar with. *Mr. Neal Hefti originally wrote this tune for his daughter in a more brisk tempo, but 'The Count' insisted they play is s l o w l y. I think it intensified the very hip and dreamy quality that is the very essesnce of the piece. Mr. Neal Hefti was the coolest and most magnificent arranger ever! May his great talent continue to be re-discovered and cherished - always, Cheryl

  • Cheryl, sorry...but tempo is exactly the same as Count's. May seem faster, because neal did not, include rhythmn guitar.

  • I have heard Count Basie's band play it slower than this. I prefer the slower version but I like this very much and all of Hefti (and Count's) works.

  • i love playing the solo with a harmon mute-it sounds so cool

its a shame neal Hefti recently died

  • great piece of smooth jazz,rip mr.hefti

  • Wonderful! Just close your eyes and enjoy!

  • Great Count Basie big band

  • i love the little solos the pianist does its so relexing as is the whole song

  • My band sounds not even close as good but my trumpet solo is way better

  • I did the trumpet solo aswell, it sounds really good on a trumpet, I think.

  • You're a pompous ego-maniac. That's Neal playing the solo. Have you ever played with Woody Herman??? I don't think so.......

  • great again again and again

  • -It would be marvellous if we could find on YouTube Henri Salvador's version, with french

lyrics , which title is " Count Basie ".

-J'aimerais beaucoup trouver sur YouTube la version d'Henri Salvador- que l'on n'oublie pas - avec des paroles en français , et qui s'intitule :" Count Basie " !

  • wow it sounds great :) i play the piano in our jazz band...

  • I quite liked this recording. It's sounds amazing. This was really helpful in learning the piece though(I'm fingering along with my copy of the first trumpet part. We got this piece at jazz band rehersal. I have the solo. It's going to be epic). Thanks!

  • if there was only a sound track from "How to murder your wife" When I hear the music from that movie it makes me so sad those days are gone.

  • I agree with you. The movie was recently released on dvd, and is shown ever so often on Turner Classic Movies. They also have a place on their website to make requests, so maybe some of us should go there and request they reshow it soon! I believe they also sell the dvd..

  • Love the song, but I guess you call this concept "video noir".

  • Count Basie, si mis oídos no me engañan.

  • si creo que te engañan

  • who is playing? what ensemble? it sounds really good.

  • it's probably whatever ensemble Neil Hefti composed

  • Which would be Count Basie's band, and i don't think thats it, the Basie Band played it differently i believe. wow, you should definately listen to the "Complete Atomic Basie" recording of it, its astounding.

  • I'll try that. My band teacher told us that Count Basie was the original composer of this

  • yea i think he might have "composed" it, but neal hefti actually transcribed it. basie played it much slower, which makes it harder to control. its really good.

  • so confusing dammit!!!

  • its all good man.

  • Where's the picture?

  • sweet. we play this in jazz band but it sounds nothing like this...... (jealous)
