@Stravinsky91 Thanks a lot for this sample of Alfvén. It is a delightful piece that has sparked my interest in, not only Alfvén, but other Swedish composers as well.
Clearly the composer's greatest work. Since I am a street musician (clarinet) in a tourist town in Southern California (San Clemente), I occasionally get to discuss the composer and this work with Swedish tourists. Most know the composer's name, but that's about all. I sum it up for them with the phrase "Wagner with lots of cream and sugar." At times the subtitle Fran Havsbandet (from the Sea) gets their attention. Sad this incredibly dramatic (&tragic) work never made it into the standard rep..
@pack1 The Idea is not to be lovely, but to someone who has never heard his music before (almost nobody I talk to in Los Angeles has), descriptive. In many ways, Alfve'n is like Wagner-- the use of several motives related to each other in various ways, the orchestration, etc. But Alfve'n adds a certain sweetness you never get with Wagner. Wagner, by way of contrast, is like strong black coffee.
In my opinion the country and it's nature, atmosphere, have a great influence on the composer. Listening to this one, and other videos from northern composers, I come in a totally different world, a new world, less complicated. That creates wideness, and remembers of warm summers with pleasant breezes, blue skies and green of woods, feeling myself comfortable and at home.....
he is one of swedens most famous composers! His most famous pieces is Swedish rapsodies for orchestra and festival pieces tha are played at the nobel prize in Stockholm.
he is the cousin to the famous scientist Hannes Alfvén, a nobel-prize winner :)
I´m thinking of upload more by Hugo Alfvén :) It´s so beautiful, his music :)
The first time I listened to Alfven 4th symphony, I was totally enthralled : I would keep the CD in a safe should I own one ! I have also uploaded some Alfven though I believe you already know his Bergakungen suite.
